Title: Alabama Department of Education to take over Birmingham schools
Post by: pmull on June 27, 2012, 04:52:04 PM
This is sad. The largest city in Alabama can't balance a budget or finance a school system. Part of the problem is all of the smart people have moved out of B'ham into nearby metro areas like Hoover, Homewood, Vestavia, Trussville, etc. The nice neighborhoods still in the city limits send their kids to private school. I don't know how this is going to turn out but I do know who is going to pay for it.  >:(

The Alabama Department of Education will take over the Birmingham school system on Wednesday after the Birmingham Board of Education tonight declined to pass a cost-cutting plan.

After months of stalling and delaying a state financial plan that included mass layoffs, the Birmingham Board of Education officially rejected it tonight.

State Superintendent Tommy Bice said during a telephone interview tonight -- after a more than three-hour Birmingham school board meeting -- that he will formally intervene in the district's operations Wednesday morning.
