Title: Welcome back, BAMAWV
Post by: Chechem on June 30, 2012, 07:03:01 PM
It appears that BAMAWV was among those millions in WV and VA who fell victim to high winds and falling trees last night.

Here's what we know:
1. He failed to appear at his own party Friday night;
2. No word from him all day Saturday either;
3. His region of WV received high winds, lightning, and thunderstorms Friday night.

Hope he and his family are okay.

Hopefully he is safe and helping his community response to the storms. Losing the power in that heat sucks royally. Especially when there is so much physical work that needs to get done.

Quote
Appalachian Power Co. reported that the storm left more than 332,000 homes and businesses, or nearly 70 percent of its West Virginia customers, without power. In Kanawha County, 72,000 homes and businesses out of a total of 104,000 customers, were left without electricity.

Outage rates topped 90 percent in at least two West Virginia counties. In Nicholas, nearly 96 percent of that county's 2,685 customers lacked power, while in Roane County, only 10 percent of its 2,327 customers retained service.

Appalachian Power officials said they would work with local emergency-services officials to identify shelter locations to allow those still without power to escape temperatures expected to approach or surpass the 100-degree mark again Saturday.

Winds gusts of up to 78 mph were recorded at Charleston's Yeager Airport late Friday, causing a single-engine Cessna 152 to flip over on the tarmac adjacent to the Executive Air Terminal. At a nearby general aviation hangar, several large hangar doors were blown from their hinges and across the parking apron, coming to rest more than 100 feet away.

Late-afternoon and early-evening commercial flights to Yeager were diverted to Lexington, Ky., and Tri Cities, Tenn., while one departing flight to Charlotte was canceled.

Dozens of uprooted trees and several downed power lines blocked Coonskin Drive, trapping hundreds of people attending a West Virginia Chaos soccer game at the park's Schoenbaum Stadium or trying to escape Friday's 102-degree heat in the shady riverside park. The soccer game was canceled only minutes after its 7 p.m. start time because of the arrival of the storm.

West Virginia National Guard security personnel guided a long convoy of cars trapped in the park onto the runway apron adjacent to the 130th Airlift Wing, and then onto Yeager Airport's general aviation area. From there, the convoy passed through a security gate and followed the airport's access road to W.Va. 114 and Greenbrier Street.

My wife's family live in the Huntington, WV area. They have been w/o power since the storm. Her dad, who is in his late 70's and has lived in the area all his life told my wife that he has never seen such a storm as this in all his years.

They were told they may have power restored by the middle of the week.

after katrina , they were rationing gas so it was real easy to get
setting in line for two or three hours to get your allotment had the suck

our generator is one of those that will run the whole house so it
will suck down six gallons before a cat can lick his fur
my freakin power bill is pennies compared to the
gas hog generator's cost per day  .

I promised my wife and myself that I would never complain about

Bummer.  He said he's 1.5 miles from one, so you may be right.  He's probably okay, just without power.
I'll bet he's busy being that good-neighbor guy, helping clear trees and cooking for the mountain folks (without a mean-spirited bone in his body).  Disasters bring out the best in Bama fans!  I'll mention him in the prayers... just in case it helps.

I had my share of working storm damage in my early years with the phone company and I can understand how long it takes to restore utilities back to service for all those people. There is so much envolved but first the utility poles must be set and possibly cell towers replaced and that takes a lot of time and a lot of technicians.

May God bless all of them, this massive heat wave is only compounding their misery.

I heard on the news that there are still about 3 million people without power. I think WV lives in a remote area which may mean it could be a while before he gets power and internet service. The biggest problem is the oppressive heat those people are dealing with. Let's hope for the best. Godspeed to the utility companies in the affected areas.

I hope he's okay.  He posted last July (when he lost power) that he has a generator, so he should have his fan working.  He may not have water, but I'll bet he does.  His generator should run his pump (assuming he has his own pump, not a community system).

The utilitity company's work to get power, phone, etc back to as many people as can as quick as they can. Rural areas like where WV lives is not high priority. Hopefully they have restored power to a nearby area so he can get food, ice and gas. Based on reports I am reading I don't expect WV to be back on here until Friday or Saturday. I hope it does not go any longer than that.

Poor ole BAMAWV is probably enjoying a few days off work.

My wife talked with her mom in Milton, WV. today. Still no power. Based on the fact that they are located in a more populated area, I hate to think how long BWV may have to wait.

If that's not bad enough, there are reports that people are selling bags of ice for $75. They ought to be throat punched.  >:( >:(

You got that right! People that gouge during natural disasters need to be shot. It is supposed to be illegal, but it isn't properly enforced much of the time. You see it all the time during hurricanes here.  >:(

Due to severely limited Internet connectivity in Marlinton as a result of Friday's massive wind and thunderstorm, the July 5 e-Edition of The Pocahontas Times will be delayed.
Frontier internet service is still down throughout Pocahontas County. McClintic Library and the local cellular network are the only public data connections available in Marlinton at this time. Unfortunately, the upload speeds available on these two networks are insufficient to allow us to upload our pages to our e-Edition server.
The Pocahontas Times hopes to have the e-Edition uploaded by Friday morning, July 6.
We apologize for the inconvenience to our e-Edition subscribers.

There's only one thing to do at this point:

First, we assume he's fine.
Second, we show him how much we missed him by punking him.

Let's think up a plausible news story, and string together 10-15 posts that become increasingly panicked and which suggest more and more confirming evidence.  It can't be something like Saban leaving. He'd sniff that out immediately. Has to be something more subtle. When he finally does return, he has a minor heart attack, and then we have a big laugh about. Anyone remember any of WV's hot button issues?

Of course we'd have to delete this post and any posts referring to it.

                The Babies

Mrs. BAMAWV has been collecting clothing, some from our relatives and some from WVU students, for the needy in our area. Over time, she has managed to dress our trailer parks up in designer gear. Wearing Calvin Klein stuff around in a car that has no matching hub caps. Of course they really enjoyed collecting baby gear to share with the newcomer village idiots. Since our girls had gotten to know the babies and their mothers, concern for their comfort and safety became their focus of attention.

While our home has no AC, we have fans going in almost every room. With the drapes drawn, the afternoon sun is not so bad. By dark, usually, the outside temps have dropped (in this mountainous section of WV) to where a sweat shirt is needed. The woman invited a couple of mothers over to warm up baby formula (house on generator) and from there the idea spread. More babies, then more babies,-- the highest count was 8 babies. A wall of pillows and quilts surrounded BAMAWV's king size bed. Mothers came and went, but the baby formula and diaper changing kept on rolling-- until this afternoon when power to the area was mostly restored.  The girls worked shifts feeding, bathing, and otherwise pampering the neighbor babies. Anytime someone made a store run into Virginia, or some other non affected region, more baby supplies were ordered.

I had the idea, when waking the 1st day of the outage, to take the family camping. But we had one boy missing in the storm and couldn't leave him (if he made it home) to fend for himself. But my camping idea was quickly shot down for
 the baby command center idea.

[Note: One baby in particular was picked to be the most beautiful baby anyone has ever seen. I had heard them (Mrs. BAMAWV and our 2 daughters) talking about this COSMO MAG baby for months. So sometime around Sunday they brought the baby wonder for me to see. Indeed this was one fine baby. Clearly a heartbreaker to be. With our screened in porch crowded with visiting moms and our women folk I wondered to myself how long this could last. Never have I seen that many women talk about another woman (although 4 or 5 months old) without saying anything derogatory. I used my japanese rolex to keep an accurate time and at the 1 minute and 7 second mark it came, "Elf ears!".

FYI, at least three of these Mothers were there not to feed and clothe the baby but to check out your house for their village idiot boyfriend (most likely not married). First time you leave the house all your good stuff will be gone. It never pays to be a good guy.

I thought your wife was Mrs. MARSHALLWV?

#+ For Mrs. BAMAWV and   #+ for you, too. I doubt you sat idly by when those in need were all around you.

Thanks to each one of you for your thoughts. Imagine a society so sissified that peeing in the dark constitutes a state of emergency.  But I was more than a little disappointed that THE Rev. Jackson and Al Sharpton were not here screaming at the top of their lungs, for FEMA to come in to feed, bathe, and house us.  Day 6 brought a national guard truck with a case of bottled water. The radio was announcing free showers at the Middle/High Schools but things will have to get a lot worse before I go shower with my neighbors.

The state of emergency/martial law power grab by the Sheriff's Dept. went over real well. They loud speakered and otherwise announced rules such as no unnecessary driving (unless in itself an emergency), no burning, no fireworks, etc. Folks pretty much ignored all of that.

The Village Idiots turned this into a contest of who could survive best without power. I guess this stems from years of practice, due to not paying their bill.  The woman (Mrs. MARSHALLWV) was coming out of a store and some logger guys where gathering. One said, "Want a hot dog?". They were cooking on his truck's engine block.  The rule around town was that if a dog would drink it, the water was OK and would help your body build up necessary antibodies. There is a hand pumped well at the community cemetary that they call "dead people water". But there are more than a few pipes driven into hillsides that supply spring water that cannot be beat.  One location won a ribbon at a spring water contest in Paris (France).

Again, thank you folks for all your thoughts and prayers!  RTR

"Welcome back, you old coot."  Glad you're okay.

Beautiful observations, WV. You obviously survived on your sense of humor and a lot of other good qualities.

I'm enjoying The Greenbrier.  They keep bragging on the spirit of the WV people, who apparently are dealing with the storm aftermath well.

The announcers hardly mentioned any mean-spirited comments from the WV citizens.  Glad you're all behaving as true patriots.   :-*

edit: I see that you're discussing The Greenbrier in the Big Fish thread.  Oops.

The Big Fish is an all encompassing destination thread that should be checked first after logging onto our site. Something for everyone, including the most finicky of perusers. Tell 'em pmull sent ya' and of course, RTR!

Sister Humdinger says "all encompassing" should be hyphenated.  HTH.

So, WV, just to be clear: Why start a new thread with the same format as "Daily Thread"?  This isn't mean-spirited behavior, I hope.

The Daily Thread has become mind-numbingly tedious. Enjoy your Daily Weariness while we at Big Fish aspire to become the Ed Sullivan Show of threads. But as a matter of practicality I think the Daily Thread should be striken from the Quad to a special section on weather. HTH
