The dog days of summer are probably a few weeks away, but we're currently entrenched in the dog days of the college football offseason.

Spring football seems like it was 40 years ago and we're still multiple weeks away from SEC Media Days, the unofficial kickoff celebration to the 2012 season.

That's why, over the next two weeks, we'll be taking an in-depth look at all 12 of Alabama's opponents. At the very least, it will get the conversation going in the direction of football and away from whatever else sports fans in Alabama discuss during the summer.

We're now headed to the second week of the season, when Alabama will play its first game at Bryant-Denny Stadium against a team with sky high hopes for 2012.

Who: Western Kentucky

When: Saturday, Sept. 8, TBD

Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium

Series history: Alabama leads 1-0 (Last meeting, 2008, 41-7, Alabama)

Early line: No odds yet.

The coach: Willie Taggart (third season at Western Kentucky, 9-15 overall)

Last year's record: 7-5 (7-1 Sun Belt, 2nd behind Arkansas State)

How they got there: In just their third year of play in the Sun Belt, the Hilltoppers notched their first winning season at the FBS level since making the jump in 2007. It just wasn't good enough to land them in a bowl game, as they were one of just two teams with winning records to miss out on the postseason. Western Kentucky was seemingly at its best when the game was on the line en route to winning seven of its final eight games. ...

Much like their basketball team that won something like 8 of their last 9 games at the end of the regular season.

What will the line be in this game Bama -36 or something like that?

The Hilltoppers are pretty good in basketball but they can not compete with the upper tier SEC teams. We need a easy home win and they need money to help upgrade their basketball facility. Both teams will get what they want out of this game.
