Title: Another Starter Bites the Dust at Penn State and Transfers Out
Post by: Marshal Dillon on August 02, 2012, 05:50:53 PM
So, the running game and kicking game will be crap this season and they have a very average QB. Hang on to your hat.

Quote
Fera, from the Houston area, is the second starter to go. The biggest loss at Penn State is 1,200-yard rusher Silas Redd, who departed Tuesday for Southern California.

O'Brien, the former coordinator of the New England Patriots' high-scoring offense, will have to reshape Penn State's attack without its best offensive player.

This is turning out almost as bad as the death penalty.  With the death penalty, there is no football for a year, and all the players transfer out.  And, while SMU had the death penalty for one year, the following year they could not field a football team because they did not have enough players.  In those days, there were not the same limits to numbers of scholarships that could be offered like there are today, but SMU still couldn't find enough players.

I wonder if there are any other schools that have been punished with the provision that players are free to transfer (other than PSU and SMU).

Here's one I missed. So, the running game is crap, the kicking/return game will be a shambles, and a senior WR is gone, but fans think PSU will run the table this year.

Brown would be the third starter and ninth Nittany Lion overall to leave in the wake of NCAA sanctions. Because of the penalties, which include a four-year bowl ban, all the Penn State players can transfer and play this season. The catch is they cannot practice with or play for Penn State, which begins practice Monday.

Whoops! Something else I missed about Penn State.

Quote
Roman Catholic (Philadelphia) wide receiver Will Fuller became the third Penn State commit in the 2013 class to change allegiances since the NCAA handed down its sanctions to the Nittany Lions last month.

As of yesterday, Tuesday August 8th, more crushing bad news for Penn State football.

Quote
Penn State lost a commitment from five-star offensive tackle Dorian Johnson Tuesday night. It was the second decommitment of the day, joining linebacker Zach Bradshaw, who opted out earlier in the day.

http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/2012/7/24/3180924/penn-state-football-roster-transfers-players

And this:

Quote
Aug 8, 2012 - A lot has changed since I wrote my 2012 Penn State preview, which was only a month ago. Since the Freeh Report and NCAA sanctions hit, PSU has lost 14 players via either transfers or decommitments. While the depletion isn't likely over with, here's a look at what they've lost and what they've still got.

Quote
Penn State has also lost five commitments thus far: offensive tackle Dorian Johnson, receiver Will Fuller, defensive tackle Greg Webb, linebacker Zach Bradshaw and defensive back Ross Douglas. That leaves them with nine known commitments for 2013, some of them quite good (four are four-star recruits according to Rivals, and two are among Rivals' Top 60 recruits in the country).

I really thought Penn State would win 9 games with that cupcake schedule they have this year, but now I am not so sure. They could be looking at 5-7 wins now.

Wonder if O'Brien is wondering what in the world he was thinking taking this position right now.

If you really think about it, he has nothing to lose. Nothing will be expected of him for at least 4 years, probably more like 6 or 7. .500 teams will earn him kudos. Not a bad gig, really.

Another player transfers, but he's going to another Big Ten school. He will probably get knifed when he plays against PSU.

Plus, another one.

Quote
Penn State tight end Dakota Royer has announced he’s leaving the Nittany Lions football program, the 10th scholarship player to leave since the NCAA sanctioned the university in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

I think his contract called for an extension if sanctions hit, so he has several years with low expectations.

Of course, try telling that to Mike Shula.

Good question. I think if he was honest, he would admit he made a mistake taking the job. These sanctions are going to affect him for 6-8 years, at least. Who wants to coach a bunch of average to mediocre teams, not to mention miss out out on conference championship games? I expect him to leave in 3 years, maybe 4, if he isn't outright fired.

Unless there is a quick turnaround and MUCHO recruiting luck, this will be the worst collapse of a football team in YEARS.  Penn State will become a punching bag for the Big 10 (whatever) and anyone who can beg them onto their schedule.

Best thing PSU can do is drop all non-conference opponents and play 1AA (whatever) teams, which they may not be able to beat.

They'll be a laughing stock.

I guess you missed the story where the coach is wanting to sign some big name teams to play, like Oklahoma, West Virginia, etc., to help his recruiting.

That was (no doubt) before all of these defections.

Now that you mention it, I think all this talk was right after the sanctions when everyone was talking tough and acting like Penn State might really run the table this year.

My comment was in jest.  I don't know when he said it, but I agree that he'd better find a way out of his position while he's marketable.

I was shocked when I read O'Brien was looking to play some marquee teams to help the PSU program since they could not go to bowl games. This is when the sanctions were first announced and there was talk about all the players staying, blah, blah, blah. I think cooler heads prevailed, because I have not heard anything since that story came out.

Only talk I heard was trying to get games against Hawaii.

I think Hawaii needs to start marketing itself in this vein:

"So, you can't go to a bowl this season? Why not come to the islands and beat up on our team? Sure beats the heck out of spending New Year's Eve in Shreveport!"

I understand that all players want exposure to NFL scouts, etc. But don't you think that the scouts will still check out players at Penn State?  I know this probably isn't a popular sentiment but I feel bad for the players and the fans. What Sandusky did was horrible and disgusting. And I believe that Penn State deserved punishment. I am not so sure that they deserved what the NCAA dished out. But that's just me.

And for the record, I am not minimizing any of the horrible actions of the folks at Penn State - some crookedness was abundant.  But these kids had nothing to do with it. Hurt the ones who did it

Wow, a transfer 2 weeks before the season begins. I did not expect that. First the running game, now the passing & kick return game.
