Nick Saban was in a good enough mood after Alabama's first scrimmage of the season to rib one of his sports information directors about his golf game.

The goal of the scrimmage, Saban said, was to give plenty of the team's underclassmen opportunities to be fairly evaluated. And, heading into the Crimson Tide's first day away from the practice fields in more than a week, that's exactly what he and his staff received.

Saban said he was on the lookout for the following:

"How they would go out there and compete, which is kind of a combination of ability to sustain effort," Saban said. "Play with mental and physical toughness, show an ability to go out there to execute and do your job, know what to do and how to do it." ...

Finally, some meat and 'taters about the "D".

Quote
Linebacker Trey DePriest led all defenders with five tackles and an interception.

Statistics from the scrimmage, which was closed to the public and reporters, were provided by Alabama media relations.

"Certainly, lots of room for improvement," Saban said. "The most critical thing is the next players on our team, to establish some depth.

"We have such a young team that when you look at the depth there's a lot of young players in those backup positions, backup roles and how quickly we can get those guys to develop is going to be real critical to establishing the kind of depth on our team that we really need."

Bama will be a little green in some areas but all of these young men are good athletes and will progressively improve each game. They've already had a couple of injuries which takes away from their depth at some of the positons that are rebuilding, hopefully we've seen that last of them.
