Title: UNC Football Next Program to Be Hammered
Post by: Marshal Dillon on August 14, 2012, 04:35:44 PM
I see some major sanctions coming down on UNC. Look for a loss of 30 scholarships, no bowl games, games forfeited, and so on. This will be interesting.

Quote
Meanwhile, in Chapel Hill, N.C., the entire university is complicit in a systemic charade of bogus, no-show classes for athletes; a scheme that—you’re gonna love this part—the NCAA missed while investigating North Carolina over the past two years.

Quote
Think about that: the athletic department and a department of academics conspiring to keep students eligible so they can play games. This isn’t high school, everyone. This is one of the most respected academic institutions in the world cheating to keep athletes eligible.

Agreed. This is about academic fraud, the heart of what the NCAA is about. I can't wait to see how the NCAA deals with this one. And what about the basketball program?

I'm not certain but I believe that losing your academic accreditation takes all your teams of the field.

That's a minor concern. If you lose accreditation, the college degree is worthless for all students.

Fact: an Aub student couldn't pass a UNC no-show class.

LOL!! Remember the Tennessee player who failed "walking" as part of his courses?

How did the NCAA investigators miss this during the 2 year investigation.  I am starting to understand how the roller barn gets away with it now.

I think the basketball team can't be touched. Too much blue blood for the NCAA.

This is a major embarrassment for UNC folks who are not cheating on academics.  I am heavily invested in the school, so this is a pain for me too.

Here's what's going on.  The NCAA can only punish if athletes are given preferential treatment.  Some of these classes had athletes and other students enrolled.  If all were treated similarly (grades without much work), then it's a university issue; wrong as far as the school is concerned, but not an NCAA violation.  That's why the NCAA "missed" some of this the first time around.  At least that's the simple version.

UNC is MEGA-pissed about this mess.  They will solve it.  Meanwhile, the NCAA has gotten involved again too.  The school will punish all involved, and it appears the NCAA will punish the school again.  Alumni and students welcome the cleanup.  Meanwhile it will be painful, and may include the basketball program too!

I hope for the best for UNC and the great folks there
in all my travels in this great country we live in ... I have to say,
the time I've spent with the folks there I found them to
be some of the best , anywhere ... bar none ...

Same here. It's been quite some time since I've been there (my cousin played football there from 1972-1976), but I remember it as a beautiful campus with great people. I hope they get it all turned around.

Chec - Even if the NCAA is assuaged by the fact that non-athletes took the bogus courses, the acedemic accreditation agency won't be. In the end I doubt that their agency (SACS?) will revoke their accreditation, crippling such an outstanding school, but they will prolly put a shot across the bow that will get everyone's attention.

I agree.  SACS will get involved, probably not until their next scheduled review.  Meanwhile UNC will do a complete cleanup to ensure it will NEVER happen again.

This latest revelation could doom UNC. This is not going away and I can guarantee you that basketball has to be involved.

The university’s internal probe covered the period of 2007 to 2011, but new evidence suggests the fraud may have gone back to the late 1990s.

Yes, very deep.  And there is an army of horn-rimmed geeks digging into this at UNC.  Believe me, the NCAA investigation can't hold a candle to the Mensa crowd that is incensed by these accusations.  These are among the best brains in the country, all intent on finding and punishing ANYONE who made their university look bad.  The punishment will be complete.

From this  article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/starting-over-north-carolina-ready-to-move-past-ncaa-turmoil-under-new-coach-larry-fedora/2012/08/17/abe6ef20-e88c-11e1-9739-eef99c5fb285_story.html) you'd think everything was over and done with.

This article (http://thequad.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/17/widening-u-n-c-scandal-prompts-independent-review/) articles suggests otherwise.

The first article sounds PSU-esque.

Maybe UNC deserves the same punishment as Penn St. This has been going on and it was an actual or so pretended, student who uncovered this. I say it probably goes back to Mack Brown. Close the football program. RTR!

Do you really think they will hammer the legend of Dean Smith and the current coach, Roy Williams? I don't see it happening. Just saying.

Are you getting some info from the newspapers up there or have friends telling you this? Are the media (newspapers, tv, radio) raising cain and demanding action? Also, what's the word on Williams and/or Smith? Has the president or BOT made a statement? I find this case very interesting.

I haven't read anything much about it, besides the forum here and other Alabama forums.  I have friends at UNC, know lots of alumni, I visit there regularly, and my son graduated from there.  I've heard from them about it.

I find this case fascinating, because for so many years mainly northern reporters and the fans and universities of the Big Ten and ACC have looked their noses down on the SEC. Now, programs at Ohio State, Michigan, Penn St., and Wisconsin have been hammered by the NCAA and now it's the turn of the ACC. UNC is one of the crown jewels of the ACC and they will get hammered, soon. The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

Miami will be hammered first.  That's as deep as UNC.
UNC will be hammered (again), but you should expect a house cleaning by UNC itself (unlike other schools).  They're embarrassed BIG TIME, and guilty folks are going to pay.

I agree UNC has a huge reputation for integrity & academics and I can see them cleaning house, to a degree. I just don't know if they can hit the basketball program with the same fervor, unless Williams retires as coach. Another sports story we will be watching for a while.

"NCAA may not return to UNC after all."
http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--fbc-ncaa-north-carolina-academic-fraud-investigation.html

Quote
"... after hitting North Carolina last spring with a 2012 postseason ban, scholarship cuts and vacated victories, NCAA enforcement has shown no interest in returning to Chapel Hill and reopening its investigation."

"It certainly appears that UNC has played the eligibility game with the same reckless abandon, and with the same skill, as the worst football factory you could imagine," UNC history professor Jay Smith said in an email to Yahoo! Sports. "It saddens all of us."

And now that a "da#@ the Rulebook, Do What's Right" precedent has been established, is North Carolina's sad academic sandal a logical second act for the Emmert Posse?
