Watching Vonn Bell of Ridgeland play tonight. He is trimming his list to 2 tomorrow. Lets see this 4 star safety at work. The times I saw him last year. He is the real deal.

He scoed the tying td. Bell has got amazing speed. His team lost to Calhoun and that team plays that crazy Gus the bus offense. They never threw to Bell's side of the field.

I went to the Prattville-Carver Montgomery game last night, and it looks like Auburn has found theirselves a QB. The Carver QB was 6-5 and had a huge arm. He was slinging it all over the place and had pretty decent accuracy. One pass went from the left hash to the right sideline about 40 yds downfield, and he threw it on a rope. This kid has a lot of potential, and he is blazing fast too. He made some great runs. The only drawback I can see is his size. He's skinny as a post. He's 6-5, but he only weighs about 215. SEC defenses will eat him up. My friend told me he's committed to Auburn, so I guess he's theirs. His name is Jeremy Johnson, and he's a 4-star on Rivals. He's very impressive, and if he can gain some weight and learn a college playbook, he could be special.
On the other side, I was surprised how badly Prattville played. Their defense was horrible. Their secondary could not run with the Carver receivers and they got no pressure on the QB at all. The Carver offense carved them up like a Christmas turkey. And on offense, Prattville has some great RBs, and a stout OL (3 OL over 300), but their QB was awful and their receivers were average. Prattville is going to have a long season, and their new coach is going to make some people there very unhappy. The good news is that Austin Gholson (Bama committ) played great and he looks the part. He could be the next great Bama OL. Just some high school info for you guys. Roll Tide.

Good idea on the HS football thread.

I went to the Austin - Spain Park game in Decatur last night. Austin beat Spain Park 37-24. Spain Park was pre-season # 5. We have a very good RB. He gained 197 yds on 25 carries. He also had a 68 yd screen pass and scored 3 times. He has offers from Troy and UAB but he has not committed yet hoping a good season year will get him a better offer. Our junior QB threw for 268 yds. We play our rival Decatur HS next Friday.

I like this thread.  Maybe we can build it up to a weekly first hand report from all over the state through the eyes of our posters.

cr, I was the umpire on the officiating crew at Prattville-Carver. It was definitely no fluke. The QB for Carver is a great athlete, throws it well and is elusive. I too was surprised at the drop-off of PHS. They lost a lot of seniors, so they will have some growing pains this year.

Cool. That was a good game to officiate. I was very impressed with that kid. But the PHS defense was slow and out of position most of the night. Funny side story, I was sitting on the Prattville side, and there was this guy 2 rows behind me who kept whining on nearly every play about a missed call or something. For the most part he didn't know what he was talking about. Once he got mad because Carver didn't get called for a block in the back. Carver was on defense. I wanted to turn around and ask him why the defense would be blocking in the first place. LOL. Some guys  need to keep their mout shut when they don't know what they're taking about.

Haha, you are right. Some folks are experts and have never put on the stripes. I loved the crowd last night on both sides - huge showing for both schools. Love to be in an environment like that, much better than seeing stands that are half full. Very electric atmosphere, especially in the first half.

I wish I had known. Watching the Ute-fest was painful. I could have been watching Bateman.

....although his team's "D" has the sucketh. They are getting hammered.

Austin beat Decatur last night 34-17 in the River City Rivalry. Austin is a very good offensive team. Like most high schools they run the spread but they can run the ball as well as pass. They have a junior QB in Chris Sparkman who played some as a freshmen but started all last year. He had two long TD passes. Our stud running back, Josh Walker, got 116 yds on 14 carries and caught a few swing passes in the flat. Walker is 6-0 198 lbs and has power and speed. He is being recruited by Troy and UAB. He is listed as an athlete. He is an excellant receiver and returns kicks and punts.

Austin is rated # 10 in this weeks AHSAA poll. We go on the road next week to play Buckhorn.

A couple of big games last night involving top 6A teams:

No. 2 Clay-Chalkville 27 - No. 5 Oxford 14

Unranked Central Phoenix City 27 - No. 6 Carver-Montgomery 14

I posted the link to the Al.com HS scoreboard on here last night, so we were keeping track of Austin and Clay-Chalkville. For a while, it looked like both teams had their hands full.

Austin fell asleep in the 3rd qtr and let Decatur stay in the game. Austin beat them badly in the 4th qtr. Austin has a good team but I'm not sure how good yet.

That was a good win for Clay. Oxford is a very good team. I'm glad they moved us out of that region and back to North Alabama Region 8 where we belong.

Bob Jones sure wasn't too kind to their new brothers over at James Clemens.  72-0.  Ouch.

I was also surprised how badly Muscle Shoals dominated Russellville (43-0).  Russellville was a perennial powerhouse and MS was the doormat just a few years ago.

Thanks HL. Decatur has always had the upper hand in football in this rivalry but Austin's third year coach is getting things turned around.

Bob Jones should be ashamed of themselves. Clemens is a spin off of Bob Jones and a first year program. It is my understanding that upper classmen athletes zoned for Clemens had their choice to stay at Bob Jones or go to Clemens. Of course the starters stayed and the bench warmers moved to Clemens. BJHS could have easily taken their foot off the gas in the 40's.

Can't believe Carver lost to Central. After the way they dominated Prattville, I thought they were the team to beat in Central Alabama. So Prattville must really suck. Saw where they lost again this week as well.

Hey guys, I don't keep up with the recruiting as much as I should, but I thought I would offer to be a part-time scout up here in Mary-land if there are any guys possibly considering the Tide. If you here of anyone, let me know and I will do my best to go to games or get papers to find out as much as I can.

So you want us to do all the research and tell you which recruits in Maryland you need to look for so you can scout them? I thought that is what a scout does?

It was try outs. Poor little CB was destined to be the last pick and a second team right fielder at that point. As WV put it CB should have just put a "kick me" note on his back. I still have a mental picture of poor little CB on the field in sneakers, no baseball cap and a Hello Kitty t-shirt. I think the reason they moved to Maryland was to give Little CB a fresh start.

My grandson plays on Cleburne Co. High but I am not sure who they play tonight. They are suppose to be young and trying to learn this year. I don't get to go to the games because of my wheelchair and not being able to handle the night time weather. Go Tigers! CCHS that is. RTR!

He must have heard me. Pmull's Austin HS beats Buckhorn 48-7.

Austin beat the tar out of Buckhorn last night. It was 41-7 at halftime and we scored the first time we had the ball in the 2nd half. Coach Perkins called off the dogs at that point and coasted to a 48-7 win. It was an away game so I listened to it on the radio. I think that is the 5th game I have missed in 9 years, all on the road. No kids in school anymore so I am done traveling until playoffs.

No. 7 Austin goes to 3-0 on the year. We play Sparkman at our place next week.

Good job by the Austin boys and kudos to the head coach for not winning any Steve Spurrier "Run the score up" awards. I would think they'd move up in the polls this week.  :clap:

The top 7 teams in 6A all had easy wins this week. No. 8 Oxford lost to Gadsden 28-21 and No. 10 Central-Phenix City was blown out 37-7 by Opelika. No. 9 Daphne won a close one with Foley 46-45. I bet that was a good game.

It looks like Cleburne Co. lost a heartbreaker to Munford 27-20.  :(

I thought Austin would have moved up, but it appears no one ahead of them lost last week.

Those top 7 teams are good. Hoover and Clay-Chalkville are very good. I'm thrilled to be # 7. The thing about high school and every other level of football except NCAA Div 1 is there is a playoff. We will get our chance to see how good we are.

 :-[saw Vonn Bell again tonight. He was a beast. He hit a guy in the chest and knocked the kid's helmet off. uT coach was there and just shook his head. Talked to him and his mom afterward. Good kid. Mom was wearing Bama gear. I hope he chooses us.

Austin beats Sparkman 42-23. Austin lead 42-7 and backed off. Coach Perkins was acting like CNS when the second team gave up those last Sparkman TD's. He was pizzed.

Josh Walker had 120 yds on the ground and 96 receiving. He scored 4 TD's. He does this every week. He has offers from Troy and UAB. His Dad told me the barn is starting to show interest. Good kid with 3.8 GPA.

No. 1 Hoover beats No. 6 Northridge like a red headed step child 55-7.

Bo Scarbrough did manage 87 yards of rushing on 16 carries but I think he learned a golden lesson about having a good offensive line against the better teams. When he gets to the college level he will realize it even more and maybe he likes Bama even more now.

DId you see what Derrick Henry did last night? Holy crap. I hope he committs to bama. He could be another TR. Also, I watched St James (Mtgy) play Bullock County. The QB for St James is a good QB. He's incredibly fast and has  agood arm. He made some really good throws last night. I don't think Bama or Auburn is recruiting him (he's a Sr.) but he probably will play Div I ball somewhere, probably as a RB or DB.

All teams go back to region play this week. There are not many games featuring two highly regarded 6A teams. The best game of the week is No. 7 Carver-Montgomery @ No. 3 Auburn. That game will be live on ESPN.

Hazel Green (4-1) visits No. 5 Austin. Hazel Green is not ranked but they would be 17th based on votes received. They are pretty good. It is Austin's Homecoming. Both of my kids will be home this weekend hoping to see some of their friends at the game.

Pmull's Austin beat Hazel Green 23-13.

Austin came out slow and played poorly but still managed a 23-13 win over Hazel Green. We had a punt blocked for a TD to go behind 7-0. The game was tied 7-7 at the half. We took control in the 3rd qtr and built the lead to 23-7 before giving up a late TD for the final score of 23-13. We did not play our best game but got the win without much doubt in the 2nd half.

Austin improves to 6-0 with a road game to James Clements next week. James Clements is a new school this year (spin off of Bob Jones who was the largest school in the state) and their team is struggling as most new programs do.

Congrats to Austin HS. Looks like they should be playoff bound.

We are in the playoffs already. We want the # 1 seed. The top two seeds stay home in the first round so that is important.

Austin beat James Clements 50-14. Austin was up 44-0 at the half and coasted to the win. It was not a fair fight. Clements is a first year school. They are a spin off of Bob Jones in Madison. Bob Jones was the largest school in the state. It will take them a few years but they will have the support to develop into a good program. 

Josh Walker, our all-state RB, had two carries for 112 yds and 2 TD's.

Man we lost to Alexandria last night in Heflin 21 to 27. The boys sure were hurt but with short time left in 4th Quarter Short was still running the ball. We should have been throwing we have good WRs. I don't know it is almost as if he wants to loose. They do every year since he has been coaching. RTR!

No. 4 Austin lost to Florence last night 25-10. Austin did not play well for the first time this season. We had 4 turnovers and could not get Florence's offense off the field. Florence converted 4 fourth downs keeping drives alive. Tough loss for the Balck Bears. We play Bob Jones next week.

Austin loses a heartbreaker at Bob Jones 17-13. We kick a field goal to take a 13-10 lead with 1:46. We are kicking off into a 30 mile an hour wind. The short kick is returned to the 45. Bob Jones makes two first downs and then completes a 35 yd pass in the end zone for a TD with 0:13 remaining.

Austin falls to 7-2, 5-2 in thr region. Regional play is done. Week 10 accross the state is nom region games. We finish third in the region behind Florence and bob Jones. We will go on the road for the playoffs.

We have been in the Top 10 all season. That ended lasted night  :(

Sounds like a very tough loss, pmull. Hopefully they can go deep in the playoffs, even on the road.

It looks like we will play Pell City in the first round. Pell City beat Oxford last night. All things considered I like that draw.

We finish the regular season this Thursday against a local 5A rival Hartselle. Hartselle is 6-3 on the year. They won the 5A title last year. They have a good program that gives us fits. We always play Hartselle on Thursday so the coaches can scout their playoff opponent on Friday.

Cleburne County beat Lincoln and our boys gave them a whipping. I am proud of our kids. RTR!

Austin beat Hartselle 34-27 in overtime last night. Austin finishes the regular season 8-2. They will play Pell City in the first round of the playoffs next Friday.

Hartselle is a 5A school but they are located about 5 miles from Decatur so it is a good rivalry. We play them as the last game of the season every year. Both coaches agree to play on Thursday so they can scout their playoff opponent on Friday. Our kids will have a rare Friday night off while the coaches watch Pell City play Tuscaloosa County.

I work in in Hartselle so I wanted this game bad. Hartselle went 14-0 and won the state 5A title last year so I wanted to shut them up.

Congrats on what looks like a gutty win and a very good 8-2 regular season. Hope they do well in the playoffs.

We play Pell City. No. 9 Tuscaloosa County beat them 34-14 last night. Pell City is 6-4 on the year. I like our first round game. However, if we get by Pell City we will play Hoover next. No way Hoover loses to shades Valley in the first round.

I predict you go 1-1 in the playoffs.  :lol2:

I love high school football in Alabama.

The Central of Clay County is a combined Lineville & Clay County and those are some bad boys down there in 4A. RTR!

They were 9-0 and rated No. 2 in 4A. Last week they lost to 3A Madison Academy.

I see where Cleburne finished their region play at 3-4 and missed the playoffs by one game.

We have 6 schools in the county that made the playoffs.

Sylvania

Fort Payne and Fyffe both finished 10-0.  It seems like Fort Payne does that almost every year in the regular season, but then they get knocked off pretty early in the playoffs.

Fort Payne has their hands full in the 1st round. they play traditional 5A power Hartselle. Don't let Hartselle's 6-4 record fool you. They lost to 6A schools Decatur and Austin. Both made the 6A playoffs. Their Region losses came to 5A No. 1 Muscle Shoals and Russellville. Hartselle won the 5A title last year.

I live in Decatur but work in Hartselle. Hartselle has a good program but I hate them. Go Fort Payne.

Austin lost to Pell City 20-13. They end the season 8-3.

Austin let this game get away. Turnovers, missed extra point and penalties will kill you on the road. We had the ball on the 8 yd line with 4th and two and with 4 minutes to go and fumbled the snap. It was not our night.

Season over. Now it is on to basketball where we are one of the best programs in North Alabama.

Fort Payne lost too.  I am not sure about the other local teams.

Looks like all the 6A South Alabama teams took it on the chin. How did Pell City score that much against Hoover?

Looks like my Wildcats really took it on the chin from Clay-Chalkville. But 9-3 after a losing record last year is not shabby.

A lot of teams are losing to Clay-Caulkville these days. They are one of the top 3-4 teams in the state year-in-year-out over the last few years. 9-3 and a first round playoff win is a very good year.

Well I am surprised, I didn't think Opelika would make it this far. USM-Wright always has a good team and Oneonta I hope to see them do really good. I have a friend who teaches there. RTR!

Hoover really put a beat-down on Clay-Chalkville. I don't think Opelika will give them much trouble. Looks like another state championship for the football factory.

The games are at Auburn this year.  It will be the most fans at Jordan-Hare to watch a football game all year.  :lol:

Another year of high school football is in the books. Time to take the sticky off this thread now that the season is finished.

One last note: Austin is 3-1 in basketball and beat cross town rival by 30 Friday night. Go Black Bears!

I am going to start this thread back up since most high schools play a jamboree game this week before getting the regular season started next week.

Austin plays a jamboree game Thursday against Lee Huntsville. They open the regular season next week against at Spain Park. Spain Park ended last season 10-3 ranked # 5. We beat Spain Park at home last year. We ended the season 8-3 with a first round playoff loss.

Jamboree football tonight. I am looking forward to seeing what Austin has this year. They graduated a good class last year so we need young guys to step up. I am worried about our linemen on both sides. That's not good.

Cross town rival Decatur plays pre-season #2 Clay-Chalkville on Friday.

Just like college the real season starts next week.

Austin beat Lee Huntsville 60-6. All this proves is Lee Huntsville is terrible. We play Spain Park on the road next week. We will know where we stand after that. We start 10 new defenders on defense. That is reason to worry.

Well I hate to look for Cleburne County High in 4A this year. All they have is youngsters. I got a feeling if the coach don't get it up higher this year it might be his last. This is just hear say around here. I like HS Football. RTR!

60-6 is still pretty stout. Your team may just surprise you this year.

Lee is terrible. We got the ball and scored on a five play drive. We kicked off and they fumbled so we got the ball on the three. Scored on first play. We kicked off held them on a three and out. We returned the punt for a touchdown. It was 21-0 with less than 5 minutes played.

I'm not sure how much good that game did us. Decatur played Clay-Chalkville, Florence played Hoover. I bet they know more about their team now than we do.

Spain Park with be a tough game next week.

Pre-season # 1 Hoover beat Florence 35-14. Pre-season # 2 Clay-Chalkville beat Decatur 34-0.

Ouch! I guess that's why they are #1 and #2.

I was interested in those two games because Decatur and Florence are our rivals in Region 8.

Looks like the 2 teams are great, after winning games like that. Be nice to see those 2 teams play each other, believe it would be a great game night. RTR!

They really have not won anything yet. Those wins were jamboree games which are just practice games that do not count. The season opens this week. Hoover plays Colquitt County, GA which is one of the top programs in GA. Clay-Chalkville plays their rival Hewitt-Trussville. Those two schools are about 2-3 miles from each other.

I've never got to see any of these high profile high school games. Maybe I will one day. I think I remember Hoover playing Oxford one time and I seen that but I am not sure. I can't remember. RTR!

Jasper used to be a troublesome town. Looks like maybe it still is. This will not bode well for those involved. Assault charges, battery charges.....somebody could be doing jail time.

Maybe pmull will show up with some good news. Maybe Austin beat Spain Park and they all shook hands after the game.

Austin lost to Spain Park 23-14 last night. The game was in Hoover and I did not go. I listened on the radio. Tough loss. We had our chances. We lead 7-3 and 14-10. SP scored their last two TD's on 4th and short around mid field. We stacked the line to stop it and the back broke loose for a TD... twice.

We are starting 10 new players on defense. We will get better. I think SP is not great but a good football team. I just hate losing.  :(

No fights to my knowledge. I have been going to Austin games for about 12 years and have never seen anything close to a fight. I did go have to enter a game through a metal detector a few years ago when we played Huffman at Lawson Field in B'ham.

I haven't seen or read about who started the fight but I have a good feeling about it though. You are right about the charges and some of those involved probably won't see another game this year either.

Hey did you all see where Oxford got pounded by Carrollton, GA. Woodland got blasted into shame by Bowdon, GA. I can't find out how Cleburne County did, but maybe today I can. RTR!

I just found out Heflin or Cleburne County, beat Weaver last night 44-20. We are only in 4A though. RTR!

I used to work in Jasper for the newspaper there, and something must have changed in the past 8 years, because stuff like that was unheard of. I am really surprised Walker would get involved in something of like this, although that game between them and Cullman has become a real rivalry over the past several years.

Here is what I heard happened. It was a close game. Walker was leading 10-6. walker had the ball on their own 30 with three minutes to go. The Walker provided chain crew incorrectly had 3rd down on the marker. Walker went for it on 4th and 12 thinking it was 3rd down. Cullman got the ball and scored with 0:18 on the clock to win the game.

The Walker Coach told his team to go to the locker room without shaking hands at mid field with the Cullman players. This is unheard of in high school. The Cullman DC approached the Walker HC and something along the line of "Coach you don't have to shake our hand but the players need to" and the Walker Coach starting throwing punches.

I heard this from an Austin coach who heard it third or fourth hand. As you can imagine it is the talk of all high school coaches in the state. The Walker Coach should be fired.

Wow! That is unreal! The Walker coach should not just get fired, he should serve some time. That is thug behavior from a HS coach that is looked up to as a roll model. I can understand his frustration at the unfairness of the down marker situation, but they should have known what down it was, themselves. At any rate, that certainly doesn't warrant that type of behavior.

Keep in mind that the chain crew and down marker in HS is volunteers provided by the home team which was Walker.

This was in the news. He has been suspended by Walker County School System with pay until a full review of what happened. The Cullman school Superintendent said that the Cullman DC did nothing wrong and no action would be taken.  Both coaches have a meeting in Montgomery tomorrow morning with the head of the AHSAA. The AHSAA requested that both schools turn over all film for their review prior to the meeting. The Walker coach is done. If it happened anywhere but Jasper he would be in jail.

Police are present at all high school football and basketball games that I attend. I assume just in case something happens. They normally just shake hands, watch the game and cut up with the students.

It still is to some point, at least it was when I was there 8 years ago. Still, this kind of behavior from the football program is a little surprising. Maybe this would happen in Parrish, but Walker High usually is above all this. There has been bad blood between these two teams in the past, though. And while I do not excuse what Walker's coach did, my sources there in the county tell me that Cullman's staff wasn't exactly saint-like, either.

Well these coaches need to lose their job in my opinion. Reason: what example did they set for your kids, or grandkids? If you lose or you think something was done wrong you just go out and fight about it. I thought we had enough kids killing kids without showing them this kind of stupidity. RTR!

The River City Rivalry, Austin vs Decatur, is this week. This is a must see game if you live in Decatur. I'm looking forward to it.

For years this game was played at the end of the year. Somehow it got moved up to the first Region 8 game of the season. The winner puts themself in a good position for the playoffs.

I see where Austin lost to Decatur last night 31-27. Must have been a good game.

Austin blew a 10 point 4th qtr lead to lose 31-27. We made too many mistakes to win last night. Every time we got momentum we let Decatur back in the game. Three turnovers, a kick off returned for a TD, an INT returned to our 5 yd line and two roughing the passer calls in the 4th qtr.

The Austin - Decatur game is always fun. A huge standing room only crowd of over 10,000.

Sorry you guys lost. Sounds like a heartbreaker.

We play Buckhorn at home. First home game of the year.

There are not many good teams playing each other this week. Bob Jones - Florence and Gadsden - Oxford look like the best 6A games. In North Alabama Athens - Hartselle is a good 5A game.

They lost to #6 Tuscaloosa County and 2-0 Shades Valley who would be ranked # 12 based on votes received.

Oxford is another good team that is 0-2. They lost to a good Georgia school and # 2 Clay-Chalkville in a close game.

I don't even know who Heflin plays nor Ranburne where I went to school. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Both schools have fallen off. We use to win championships but these kids nowadays don't care how they play. RTR!

Well, you guys lost to ranked Decatur and to Spain Park, who garnered votes, also. Just sayin'.... :dunno:

We have work to do. We are 0-1 in region play. A big win tonight would help the kids confidence a lot. We should be 2-0. We have blown 2nd half leads in both games. We are very young this year so there is going to be some ups and downs but tonight is a must win win.

We put 9 kids in college ball from last years team. Only one went DI but UNA and Jax State got some good players. We had one kid sign to play JUCO in AZ where Jesse Williams played. It is hard to replace that talent in HS ball.

It is going to be a long year for the Austin Black Bears. We lost 32-23 to Buckhorn last night to go 0-3 on the season. Very disappointing. We have blown 4th qtr leads in all three games. We had four turnovers with three leading to Buckhorn TD's. An INT returned 68 yds, a fumble scooped up after a QB sack for a long TD and a mishandled a punt snap deep on our side of the field.

I scanned the 6A scores and only saw one upset. Smiths Station beat # 4 Auburn 34-18.

Oxford beat Gadsden 6-0. I bet that was a good game. Another good game was Bob Jones 13 Florence 7.

Sounds like turnovers have killed Austin every game.

Turnovers and losing the 4th qtr. We have been out scored 14-0 in the 4th all three games. Too much youth and no depth on defense. I have no excuse for the offense. they have to play better and stop turning the ball over.

Austin went on the road and beat Hazel Green 29-26 last night. That keeps our slim playoff hopes alive. We are 2-2 in region play but we still have Florence and Bob Jones to play.

A win is a win. That gives them a little momentum.

Well I noticed Ranburne is still undefeated in 2A. I think this is the first time we been this far not losing since 1983. Cleburne County won again in 4A, so they might and I mean might small might make the playoffs. lol, RTR!

Wild game last night. Austin beat James Clemons on homecoming 41-36. It was not your normal game. Austin lead 35-7 with 5 minutes to go in the 3rd qtr. JC came back to take the lead 36-35 scoring 29 unanswered points. Austin finally scored again to re-take the lead. JC was on our 10 when time ran out.

Austin is not very good this year but their games are exciting. They are 3-4 (3-2 region) and have lead every game in the 2nd half. The average final margin of all games is 5 points.

Gadsden beat # 2 Clay-Caulkville 24-21

Alexandria beat Cleburne County last night. Ranburne in 2A won again that makes them 7-0 and ranked in the State. I think this is the first time we have went undefeated this far since 1989. RTR!

Seems all their games are exciting. Got to be fun to watch, even with the heartbreaking losses.

Can't believe Clay-Chaulkville lost and Opelika was shut out, although Smiths Station has been playing very good ball this year.

Austin plays Florence at home tonight. This is a tough match up for us. Florence is 4-1 in region play with their only loss coming to undeated and Top 10 ranted Bob Jones.

Florence is loaded. Their QB is committed to Ole. They have a lineman committed to Vandy. Everyone including Alabama is after LB Keaton Anderson.

We have good players too. Several will made good intramural players in college.

Cleburne County High plays Jacksonville tonight and it should be another good one. RTR!

Another Friday Night, Another Heartbreak. That is the headline of the Decatur Daly sports page. Florence beat Austin 34-30.

This has become typical this year. A great game but we don't make the plays at the end of the game. Austin led 23-14 at half. Florence comes back and takes a 27-23 lead. We get a score to go ahead 30-27. It is getting late in the game. We get the stop we need forcing Florence to punt. We fumble the punt to set Florence up at our 20. They score to go ahead 34-30. We return the kick to their 9 yard line. We decide to run the wildcat and pound the ball in. We fumble the shotgun snap. Game over.

We are 3-3 in region play. Going to be hard to make the playoffs now. It looks like we will be 5th with the top 4 teams getting in.

It is disappointing. We have a good coach and he has the kids playing hard. They never quit. They can not catch a break. They have lead every game late in the 4th qtr. There is a thin line between being a good team and missing the playoffs. Turnovers have killed the season.

My wife teaches at the school. I know all the coaches and a lot of the players. It is a lot more fun when they are winning.

Those types of games are very hard to swallow. You said this was a young team and unfortunately that's what young teams tend to do; turn the ball over. Let's hope, if nothing else, that this is a learning experience for them.

I'm over in the Shoals at my parents' house this morning, pmull, and I saw the headline "Russell saves Falcons" in the TimesDaily.  I started reading the story and couldn't help think "wow...this sounds just like pmull's account of the rest of Austin's games this season."

Well, my boys went up to Hoover a few years ago and pulled off an upset in the regular season (of course, we met them in the playoffs the same year and got it handed to us), so who knows? Maybe the boys will get it going and pull it off.

Hoover beat TC 41-0. TC only got 59 yards total offense.

CB I know you wanted the win but I would not get too upset with this loss. Hoover does it to everyone. TC is 7-2 and headed to the playoffs. They still have a lot of football to play.

Austin plays # 2 Bob Jones tonight. The Decatur Daily expects a close game picking Bob Jones to win 17-14.

HL is right. Austin pulled off the upset and beat # 2 Bob Jones 28-22 last night. Like every Austin game this year the game came down to the last possession. Austin intercepted a BJ pass in the end zone with 15 seconds to play to seal the win.

We miss the playoffs by a tie breaker. Decatur and Austin have 4-3 region records but Decatur wins the tie breaker since they beat us.

It was COLD last night.

I was just checking the scores and saw that Hazel Green beat Buckhorn 28-27. That means Austin finished area play tied for third but lose tie breakers to both Decatur and Buckhorn. We all finished 4-3 but both of those ties beat us after we gave up 4th qtr leads.


In 5A #3 Muscle Shoals beat #9 Cullman 47-7. Including Cullman's 7 points MS has only given up 24 points all year (9 games). Spanish Fort and Jackson must be very good to be ranked ahesd of MS.

Tough season for Austin, pmull, but congrats on the big win last night.  That's something to build on for next year (even though I know there's still an out-of-region game left).  I read the al.com write-up about the game - sounded like a real thriller.  I'm thinking Madison Academy may be the only team north of Birmingham that has a shot at winning it all this year.  Muscle Shoals has had a good run, but that region is pretty weak I'm thinking.

I'm not so sure the Muscle Shoals region is weak. That area includes Hartselle, Cullman and Russellville. Those teams are normally good. Hartselle seems to make a deep run in the playoffs most years.

We play Hartselle next week to end our season.

Russellville and Cullman are both pretty bad 5A teams this year.  Russellville missed the playoffs for the first time in like 15 years, and I know they lost to 3A Deshler.

I hope I'm wrong and Muscle Shoals makes a good run in the playoffs.  They should make the quarters, and after that, things will probably get a little tough for them.

Cullman was 7-1 going into the Muscle Shoals game and rated # 9 in 5A. That is not bad in my book. Hartselle is 7-2 with losses to Muscle Shoals and Cullman. I knew Russellville was not going to the playoffs but I caulked that up to playing in a difficult region.

My bad.  I was thinking Cullman was having a down year as well for some reason.  I was mostly going on my BiL's word (he's a high school coach), and he saw the NW AL 4A and 5A regions were both weak this year, particularly 4A though.  He did say that he didn't think Muscle Shoals was as good as they appear due to the region though.

Austin plays Hartselle tonight. Hartselle is a 5A school but they are a good one. They seem to make deep runs in the playoffs most years. Hartselle is only 8 miles from Decatur so this is a friendly rivalry. Both teams want this game bad.

We close the season every year against Hartselle. The coaches have agreed for several years to play this non-region game on Thursday so can can have an extra day of rest and scout the first round playoff opponent on Friday.

This is it for Austin since we missed the playoffs.

They postponed the Austin-Hartselle game until tomorrow night.  :dunno: When did a little rain postpone a football game?

Well they might have been a chance of lightning and they wanted to wait. They are getting funny that way these days. RTR!

Austin ends their season with another close game losing to Hartselle 38-31. Another game that come have gone either way.  :(

No playoffs so we go to the basketball court where we are normally one of the best teams in North Alabama.

My boys from TCHS have Oxford in the first round on the road. Oof. Never like to go on the road in the playoffs, but maybe the boys can pull it out. Lots of Mobile teams in there.

Region 8 in 5A still have Muscle Shoals and Athens alive. They both won big with shut outs last night. Cullman lost to unbeaten Southside 28-21.

Region 8 in 6A still have two teams left. Bob Jones beat Oxford and Florence beat Clay-Chalkville. Those are pretty good wins over two good teams.

Wow on some of these scores. Saraland over Homewood.

Wow, and Florence beat Clay-Chalkville.

Preacher will be happy. Cleburne County won.

Tonight is the quarterfinals.  I thought I'd slept through a week there for a minute...

I'd love to see Florence win, but they'll probably be lucky to keep it within 3 TDs.  Muscle Shoals and Madison Academy may represent the North well.

Florence only down 9-7 to Hoover at the half.  Hump is sporting a towel with a script A hanging off his waist.

Wow! Hoover barely beat Florence 22-21.

Muscle Shoals, Madison Academy, and Tanner are still around.  Madison County squeaked one out.  That Muscle Shoals D must be something fierce.

Well the Cleburne County Tigers went further than anyone thought this year. My alma mater also went further than we ever even thought in Class 2A, Ranburne Bulldogs. Next years' high school teams should be really good, both Heflin and Ranburne were very young this year. RTR!

Muscle Shoals got pounded by Spanish Fort last night 35-14 in the 5A state championship game.

BTW, Muscle Shoals have brothers playing at QB & WR. Their names?....Smothers, and they connected on the team's last TD.

High School football starts tonight. All teams play out of region in week one. There are some good match ups.

My team, Austin, is in the new 6A Region 8. We play 4 teams that moved up to 7A including #4 Spain Park and # 2 Bob Jones. Every team on our schedule made the playoffs last year. We open tonight at Spain Park. There might not be a tougher schedule in the state.

Austin went to Birmingham (Hoover) and lost 5-3 to 7A #4 Spain Park. Yes they were playing football not baseball.

Austin has to find a way to finish games. Just like like year we let a game get away we should have won. On the bright side this years team could be pretty good. Spain Park is one of the better programs in the state.

Austin loses to Buckhorn 28-26. Austin led again going into the 4th qtr. Buckhorn's winning score game on a 28 yd interception of a screen pass by a DL for a TD. Ouch!

Ouch, indeed! They sure find a lot of ways to give away games in the 4th Q.
