Title: Forum Board Category Suggestions
Post by: SUPERCOACH on March 03, 2011, 12:01:57 PM
I would love to hear everyone's suggestions as to how we should organize our board.  Here are my thoughts and some guidelines:

  • I want to have a campus theme.  The different boards should be named after various buildings and locations on campus, to the extent possible.
  • I want it to be very obvious and clear cut as to which forum things should go in.  This should cut down on the amount of time we spend moving topics, and the amount of time people spend looking for stuff they are interested in.
  • There is a fine line between having too many boards and not having enough.  If you have too many, it might be a lot of work to find stuff.  If you don't have enough, then topics will roll off the first page very quickly.
  • With this software, I am finding that it is very easy to see all of the new stuff by just hitting the "unread posts" link, regardless of where they are located.  So it might not really matter too much if we end up having a few more boards as long as we don't go nuts with it and make it too hard to know where to start a new topic.
  • It really doesn't do much good to have different boards if everyone always uses the same one.
  • As always, if we don't like how the software works I can tweak it a little or build something custom from the ground up to make it better in time, as needed.

Now let's hear everyone else's thoughts and suggestions.

Lol.  I literally just posted on the moderator page asking about how you wanted to do this.

Great minds.

It's your board Supercoach. The rest of us are just living in it. Category's are good. Myself will be primarily on the football/sports board.

True... but it would be a lonely place if I were in here by myself.  :)

That's one area where Woollyal could improve. There are too many boards there.

I thought the same thing when I visited over there last weekend.

The easiest thing to do is mimic what TS had.  Seemed to work: Halftime, Politics, etc.

People are used to that and know how to use them.

The main boards seperating recruiting, and religion, politics and what we have now. I think that would be about right to me. JMHO. RTR!

My preference would be something like:

Football
Recruiting
Halftime
Politics
Religion

And if it wouldn't be too much - maybe boards for baseball and basketball. Perhaps an "all other sports" board?
Is that too much? I just know that when I come on, I know that football is the most interesting board for me and that's where I would head.

Anyway - just my $.02 :)

Sounds good. Except people won't post serious threads in Halftime normally...so more could be included with the political forum...religion and social science categories for the smart people.   :D

I'm good with that.  You're right; Halftime was a pacle where front-page threads were sent if they weren't unworthy enough for the dungeon.  ;D

Smart people don't argue either religion or politics.

Seriously, when Halftime first started, people posted serious threads (science, religion, history, politics, you name it.... along with the light (jokes, conversation, noncontroversial subjects).

After Halftime was split off by itself, the trend was to post only very light and entertaining subject matter there.  The only other option was the Political forum.  So we began to lose threads about science, history, religion, etc.
