Thanks for the article: Quote We didn’t even know who he (Coach Bryant) was. Ray George [had been] the head coach, and they fired him when I was a freshman. They were going to bring in somebody from Kentucky. Course, in this part of the country, all we knew was the Southwest Conference. Then all of the sudden they have a yell practice down at a place called The Grove. And this big ole man got up there and started talking. Took his jacket off. Sort of threw it down on the floor. Sort of a sports coat. And he made an impression on all of us that first day. Amazing how one person can have such a huge impact on a football program.

Quote Stallings: Two of ’em. One of ’em was the Fiesta Bowl. I hated that loss. Then when we were playing Florida [in 1991], we got beat pretty badly [35-0]. After that, we went [31] games without losing. Those two were the worst games. But I’d say that the losses probably hurt me most was one to Auburn [in 1995] we should have won, and then when we were playing Arkansas in Tuscaloosa [in 1995] and they got 12 men on the field and nobody sees that except everybody in the stands and on the sidelines. Then they bounce the ball in and called it a completed pass for a touchdown. He was a very good coach but he is a better man.

Coach Stallings has always had a way of being very candid without being negative on a personal level about anyone. He just tells things like they are.

A great coach who knows where to give credit. Stallings: Well, it means I had some good players. You can be a good player on a bad team and still go into the Hall of Fame. But if you’re a football coach, you go into the hall because you’ve had good football players…who won games. And I want everybody that played for me and worked for me to feel like they were part of the reason I’m there. He learned both of the things in the previous 2 posts from Coach Bryant.

Coach Stallings understood the players and knew how to win. He knew that winning didn't require running up a score, and winning by a small margin kept the players working hard. Moreover, Coach Stallings' teams always worked hard and improved during the season - a trait of the great Bryant teams. |
