Title: Spammers
Post by: yellowpope on April 04, 2011, 10:23:56 PM
Looks like you've been hit with a lot of spammers lately...You may be able to change your spambot settings so that instead of the CAPTCHA image, when registering, they get a question to answer to make sure the person registering isn't a spambot. Should majorly help with spammers. It would also need to be a question the spambot can't google and get a valid answer. For example: "Who is our head football coach?" not "Who is bama's head football coach?" Anyway, should work wonders if you have the capability of changing it to a question instead of the CAPTCHA image. Just my $.02

I think these spammer's are real people (but still spammers), but you could be right.  I changed the default captcha settings at the very beginning and that took care of the bots we were getting then.  I usually wait until they actually do something before I ban them though.  A few of them are legit.

Spambots can register and read CAPTCHA images and even do the confirmation email if I understand correctly.

But...

The point is, if they are bama fans, they will know who our coach is. If they are spammers, they won't voila no more spammers lol

I think we have a combination of the two, real people and bots.  The good news, whatever is in pacle to keep them from posting is working.  I think we have had 1 or 2 spam posts.  So they are filling up the member registry, but not really hurting anything at this time.  TS got literally hundreds of bots registering every day, we quit trying to keep up with them.  They never posted.  The ones that are real people and post spam you cant really stop unless you stop allowing people from other countries.

I wonder how in the world all the time spent on spamming is profitable for anyone. But I guess it's like junk mail, somebody is buying the crap.

They get like $.50 or something for every account they register I read somewhere.

Regardless of whether they post or not, it just kinda looks sloppy to see the new member panel and see that it's a bunch of spammers.

I know enough about it to know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

I have to correct you on this, ricky. The only good spam comes in a can from the store that can be fried and turned into a sammich.
