I'm old enough to remember very well Nick Charles and his on-air partner, Fred Hickman when CNN Sports made its debut. At the time, I preferred their on-air banter more than anyone on ESPN (and the ratings reflected it). Sort of like the Pat Summeral/John Madden of sports anchors.
