Title: What Really Matters...
Post by: carl childers on November 11, 2012, 09:11:29 PM
The 16 year old son of a friend of mine went missing Friday, and they spent all weekend with no sleep, criss-crossing 4 counties looking for him. They found him this morning, having shot himself in an abandoned old house. Suddenly the outcome of a football game seemed pretty trivial. Please pray for comfort and understanding for this family.

This is what I keep emphasizing to the fans over the years. Football is a game, period. What really matters is our family & friends, country, and our relationship with God.

So sorry to hear about this.  Something similar happened to neighbors of my parents a couple of weeks ago.

It is not inconceivable that you would have this reaction to the post you quoted. But why would you imagine that anyone else would care about that?

Truly.  I was wondering what on the list of: Family, Friends, Country, and especially our relationship with God is less important than a football game.

My prayers will be with this family during such a tragic loss.  I am the parent of a 15 year old and I can only imagine their pain.

I don't get it. Are you saying the post is incorrect or you disagree? I would like to know what you find wrong with this post.

I guess I was rolling my eyes at being lectured on a football forum.

"My wife is in the kitchen with a gun in her mouth but Hell, it's time for the BCS show."

or

"My daughter was snatched on her way to school but gee, the Meltdown thread is about to be posted."

But thanks to MD we all know what really matters. THNX

I apologize that you are so paranoid that when someone states their personal beliefs about life that you feel like you are being personally "lectured" to. Maybe you have a guilty conscience or feel insecure about your own beliefs, but that's your problem, not mine.

I left Woolly Al because dust ups like this are an hourly occurrence over there. Since coming here I have been delighted at the level of maturity that posters here show. We're not perfect, of course. I have occasionally said something snarky, MD or BAMWV hits me with the zip-it emoticon, and we all move on. So it's not that there isn't the occasionally snarky or off-topic thing said on here, it's that it never escalates into a pissing contest. The best way for stuff we disapprove of to get off page one is to not reply.

Let's get back into CRS mode.

You make a very good point, but in all honesty, I think I have used the zip-it emoticon one time and I use it directed at myself, kinda like a no comment or I want to say something but I better not say anything, not directed at another person. Your assessment of this site is right on and that's what makes it such a good forum with so many outstanding posters. Supercoach, pmull, XBAMA, Jamos, 2Stater, Chechem, and many more posters make this a fun & interesting place to go. I hope you hang in there with us and don't leave.

Not insecure, but it is the 2nd time for the same lecture in 10 days (see the LSU in-game 4th qtr). I apologize to the OP for the hi-jack but I didn't realize an eye roll would cause this much of a response from others. I am sorry for your friend and just got home from a viewing myself.

Perhaps we can benefit from my lack of sensitivity and create a pacle where we can all go to cry. We could call this new section the Black Warrior River of Tears (BWROT). As opposed to Evergreen Cemetary which is dead guys we e-knew, BWROT would have stories of dead guys we don't know, the heartbreak of psoriasis, dead trees, and my personal favorite,-- dead pets. HTH and TIA

Black Warrior River of Tears (BWROT) has a nice ring to it but I would suggest we just put prayer requests in the chapel. Since we all agree we have mostly a mature group of posters it may not be necessary to remind us that football is just a game and there are more important thinks in life such as the death of a loved one.

Prayers to the family for their tragic loss.

I guess several folks misunderstand what I am trying to convey and who I am addressing when I mention life's priorities. I am not addressing the posters on this site, who you and others point out are mature and understand football is a game. I am "thinking" out loud about all those folks out there who have made football their religion and/or base their manhood on how well their team plays and wins. I have witnessed this personally by folks at work, listening to Finebaum, and having lived in this state for many years. At my previous worksite, we had a guy who called in sick every time his team (Alabama) lost a football game. It was a well-known joke at the place. Now, let's get off this subject and talk Tide football & basketball.
