Title: The Truth About Chizik and the Collapse of Auburn Football-Article
Post by: Marshal Dillon on November 25, 2012, 07:17:18 PM
I think many on this forum guessed these were some of the reasons for collapse, but we only knew part of the problems. This has Mike DumBose written all over it.

Quote
Auburn President Jay Gogue. Some Auburn trustees. Former Auburn coach Pat Dye.

Long before Alabama 49, Auburn 0, official and unofficial Auburn power brokers were told during the past off-season that Gene Chizik’s football program was coming apart at the seams

Quote
One example: During the second week of the regular season, before the cracks in the foundation began to show up on the field in a lifeless 28-10 loss at Mississippi State, an academic adviser told Chizik there was a problem with one of his Auburn starters.

The adviser said the player wasn’t going to class, wasn’t doing his classwork, wasn’t making much of an effort at all in the classroom.

Chizik’s response: He told the adviser he didn’t believe him. That player started the Mississippi State game and struggled terribly, never showed much development on the field and eventually lost his starting job.

Good article. Thanks for posting, MD. I think we all figured it was much like this.

I always thought Chiznik came across kinda smug & arrogant and this article backed up that observation. The academic problems and everyone knowing about the problems was somewhat of a surprise.

Yep, we all were far ahead of Scabs article. Scab was told all of this stuff when Newton was there but refused to print anything negative about the barn.

This is the stuff that the insiders allowed to be leaked to the media.  It would be fascinating to find out what they don't want leaked to the media.  I wish somebody down there would spill all the beans.

Indeed. These are not confessionals. They are offered to shore up support for adminstration's decision to let the coach go, and to dump all the dirty laundry in his lap as he's heading out the door. Too much of that and the spurned coach may spill some beans. Though it sounds like Chiz' ego may be better served by preserving the illusion of his National Championship than by telling the true story of how it happened.

I really hate to see him go.  He was taking that program right where I wanted it.

I'm sure that a condition of his buyout is to keep his mouth shut, so I doubt he will be talking much about what went on, at least for now.

Whew. I had no idea that it was THIS bad down there. These are the kind of situations that can really set a program back several years, even if the NCAA doesn't get involved. Hopefully this means about, oh, 10 or so straight wins over the barn.
