Title: Coach in Waiting
Post by: SeniorTSM on December 05, 2012, 01:59:14 PM
here is MHO on the Coach in waiting thing. I dont think it works.
1. you have a guy on the staff that is going to be the next guy, well if things start to go bad and he is on the staff...what makes you think he is going to be any better, shouldnt he get some blame if the team sucks too.

2 it is better for a guy to leave on a good note at a univesity as a assistant and then everyone can say yah i remember when he was here, lets hire him as HC.

so to sum it up, I dont think Kirby Smart is trying to be a coach in waiting, and IMHO he needs to go to a smaller school and have some wins and come back.

what yall think? :-\

I agree.  After all, Muschamp is the coach in waiting at Texas.

Gus left and came back.  Texas did fine with Chiz left, but dropped off the planet when Muschamp left.

It is very rare when promoting an assistant coach to head coach works.

One of those rare moments was when Fran left and TCU promoted Gary Patterson.

Bama is no place to learn how to be a head coach.  CKS needs to go somewhere and learn what is involved in running a program.  This will take at least 4 years IMHO.  If he's successful, then he'll be a top candidate to replace CNS.

But hscoach brings up a good point about Gary Patterson.  As I recall, CGP was the only ass't coach that stayed at TCU when Fran left.  Probably that was because he had a good shot at being HC there.  But the circumstances meant CGP was able to hire an all new staff, i.e. his staff and not one he inherited.

If CKSmart was named HC tomorrow.  How many of the current coaches would he retain???  Lots I imagine.  That's good & bad.  Good because they are good coaches; bad because a HC needs to learn how to put together a staff and manage changing it.

Well enough from me!

Patterson is a good example of one that worked. IMO that worked because Coach Fran took most of the staff with him and Patterson only kept a few loyal defensive assistants and hired the rest. Promoting form within can cause a lot of friction on the staff for those that did not get an upgrade.
