Title: Concealed Pistol Comparison
Post by: deahl001 on March 04, 2011, 10:11:18 AM
I know we had the gun thread, but I was afraid this might get lost in the crazy...

I am looking at getting a pocket pistol. I know, I should get a "real" gun, but I already own a S&W 686 Plus .357 revolver (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_764606_-1_757767_757751_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y) for that. I am specifically looking at getting a small pocket gun that I can carry without any concern. The S&W weighs over 40oz loaded, so it's just not practical :)

I am torn between the Ruger LCP (http://www.ruger.com/products/lcp/index.html) and the Taurus 738 (http://www.taurususa.com/gun-selector-results.cfm?series=738). Has anyone done any practical comparisons or know of any good articles on the two? I know there are exhaustive comparisons out there for the LCP and P-3AT, but I already know I would take the LCP out of that pairing. Any input would be great!

Let me tell you what the shooting editor of the Shooting Times said in the Shooting Times Gun Guide 2011. He wrote an article titles, Favorite Firesticks. His Top 10 included rifles and handguns. One of the ten was the Kel-Tec P3AT. He was skeptical when he first bought it, and he took it to the range. Here's a breakdown of his commnets:

Its trigger was noticeably better than my two personal .380's, boh of which cost considerably more.It was also more accurate, felt better in my hand, and was  100 percent reliable despite my best efforts to make it fail. I never did make it fail, but I learned to love that little pistol in the process of trying.  He carries one in his pocket every day.

Just saying. It's your decision. :)

The LCP is basically a P-3AT with a slide lock, fixed ejector, better guide rod and smoother edges. Their internal parts are virtually the same as well as their price. If anything, I think the LCP might be built a hair better, but it's pretty much a coin flip based on preference and feel. Based purely on feel and appearance I am sold on the LCP between those two. But this Taurus 738 looks nice too, and I haven't seen many comparisons on the interwebz between the two of them.

Have you "googled" reviews and comparisons of the Taurus 738? Also, here's what is said in Handgun Buyers Guide 2011 about the 738:

"Make way for the lightest Taurus ever created. The 10.2 ounce 738 TCP is not only the lightest semi-auto in the Taurus line, it's lighter than any of Taurus small-frame revolvers, as well. The 738 offers 6+1 of .380 ACP, a durable polymer frame, and low-profile sights."

I like the 3.3 inch barrel length.

I have and found some reviews. Just nothing quite as extensive as the LCP/P-3AT reviews. Good info out there, just didn't know if anyone here had personal hands on with both of them.

You might want to try one of the new "mini 9's". 9MM rather than 380 in about the same size & weight frame with more power. Ruger makes one and I'm sure SIG, Walther, and the rest will have them soon if they don't already.

To which Ruger model are you referring?

It might be a tad bit huge for concealed carry, especially if you're wearing jeans and a polo shirt. :D

Ended up getting this:

Smith & Wesson BODYGUARD 380 (http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product4_750001_750051_765772_-1_757892_757752_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y)

Had to have it special ordered because they didn't have it in stock, but looking forward to putting some rounds through it when it comes in!

Let us know how it works out.  I carry a Ruger LCP every day, but I'm going to pass it off to my wife and get something else (besides my Glock).

I use the Taurus 738 TCP as a daily carry.  Over 1,000 rounds fired, never once had a FTE.  Perfect, light, easily concealed.

My holster - easily kept in front or hip pocket.  The back flap conceals the outline.  Very nifty.

I have a Kel-Tec .22 fits in the palm of my hand. I do realize that although it may not stop someone, it unloads quick enough to give pause. My 9mm is not as easily concealed. Although both are close at hand.....  :D
