Title: Alabama-Tulane Set To Renew Old Rivalry On Sunday (ESPNU 5:00)
Post by: pmull on December 30, 2012, 07:52:46 AM
Quote
The Alabama men’s basketball team will return to Coleman Coliseum where it will take on the Tulane Green Wave on Sunday at 5 p.m. CT.

The game will be televised on ESPNU and can also be heard on the Crimson Tide Sports Network, with Chris Stewart and Bryan Passink on the call.

“Tulane is an excellent team,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “They are 10-3 on the year and they could easily be 12-1. They’ve lost a couple of close games at Nebraska and at San Diego. They are playing great basketball right now and they have a nucleus of experienced veterans, size and depth. They are a very good basketball team”

The Crimson Tide (7-4) will look to turn things around beginning with Sunday’s contest. Alabama comes into the match-up having dropped four of its last five games, most recently falling at home to Mercer, 66-59, on Dec. 22. Junior guard Trevor Releford scored a team-leading 19 points in the losing effort.

We need to win this game and the home game against Oakland to finish the non-conference schedule 9-4.

Alabama still has a respectable RPI of 53 which is due to the schedule we have played. Our SOS is 26. Tulane is 9-3 but their RPI is 196 and SOS is 320. We should win this game.

Alabama basketball is getting hard to watch. We are not very good. This could be the worst offensive team Alabama has had since before CM Newton was coach. We only scored 50 points against Tulane. We have lost 5 of our last 6 games. Unless we improve quickly we may only win 1 or 2 more games. I don't see anyone in the SEC we can beat at this point.

The bright spot in the game was Nick Jacobs. He played by far his best game of the year. He scored in double figures and was a force in the middle. I do not know why CAG sat him down for 8 minutes and did not bring him back until under 2 minutes to go in the game with us down by 5.

Back to back home losses to Mercer and Tulane. Good grief.

Injuries have killed this team. But no excuse to lose to Tulane.

I hate to say this, but this seems to be a coaching problem. I am beginning to believe that our players spend all their practice time on defense and spend very little time on offense, especially outside shooting.

We played a zone defense that was very active and effective. Tulane only scored 53 points on 36% shooting. Our press was not effective. We only caused 13 turnovers and very few were due to the press. We are not a good rebounding team. Tulane beat us 34-30 in rebounding and they had 13 offensive rebounds to our 9.

We must find a way to score. In our 5 losses we have scored 62 points or less 4 times. We scored 71 in the loss to Dayton.

Nick Jacobs played his best game. He scored 12 points and had 3 rebounds in 24 minutes. He only had two fouls. He is our only hope for a post player that can score. Why Jacobs was not in the game during the run Tulane made to take control of the game is a mystery to me and to that lady announcer that called the game.

Our team has been hit with two major injuries. They happen to be two of our most physical players. That hurts but CAG is responsible for only having 10 scholarship players and no depth at the post position.

I love Alabama Basketball. I will continue to watch every game and pull for Tide. But from what I have seen we are in for a long season unless CAG has a trick up his sleelve he has not shown us yet.

I am going to pull for Alabama not matter what. I do think we have to get some power inside before we make a run. We have to have a 3-pt. shooter to keep the other team honest. JMHO. RTR!

WV is not a Carl Engstrom fan. I am. We were 6-0, won our early tournament, and was going head to head with a good Cincinnati team on the road when Engstrom got hurt. We are 1-5 since his injury. HTH

Roll Tide and lets hope our team improves.

IMO it is OK to be disappointed but you should never give up on your team.

His five PFs, 1 TO, 1 REB in 16 minutes were at least entertaining.

He was averaging 4 pts and 3 rebounds in 7 games. He fouled out of 1 game. His playing time was steady increasing due to his defensive production. Stats do not show altered shots and how many times teams avoided driving the lane due to his presence. I am not trying to say he was an All-Conference player. He was a viable option at the post position on a team that needs help at that position.

He still played basketball like the windmill hole at Putt-Putt. He clogged up the middle on offense more than defense.

Watch how, say Levi Randolph, moves when a shot is in the air. He is positioning himself as to where he anticipates the ball to come off the rim. That cannot be taught. It is instinctive coming from years and years practice and play. But I'm sure the Swede was a decent handball player.

If I had a wish, it would not be for Minute Bol. Give the Tide Charles Oakley and we could paint Rupp Arena crimson.
