Title: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: pmull on January 22, 2013, 08:01:53 AM Quote The Alabama men's basketball team will close its two-game homestand on Tuesday night when it welcomes Kentucky to Coleman Coliseum. The contest is set to tipoff at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised on ESPN. “We are excited to tomorrow’s game against Kentucky,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “After watching them on film, I am very impressed with their length, athleticism, speed and quickness. The numbers tell the story on what they are doing from an offensive standpoint. They are very efficient offensively. Defensively, they are an extremely diverse team. They are very talented in their ability to create steals, block shots and get in passing lanes. It will be a great challenge for our team. We have to do a great job offensively with our decision making and execution. Defensively we have to do a great job getting back in transition and limiting their opportunities in the open floor situations. We are looking forward to the opportunity." The Crimson Tide (11-6, 3-1 SEC) enters the game having won three straight SEC games and four of its last five overall following a thrilling 50-49 win over Texas A&M last Saturday night. Sophomore guard Trevor Lacey hit the game-winning jumper with nine seconds remaining to lift the Tide to the win. Lacey finished with 14 points and led the team with six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior guard Trevor Releford returned from an ankle injury to finish with a team-high 15 points off the bench – all coming in the second half. http://www.rolltide.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/012113aab.html Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: Catch Prothro on January 22, 2013, 08:23:03 AM We need everyone playing well and hitting on all cylinders to have a chance in this game.
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: pmull on January 22, 2013, 08:38:47 AM I expect to win this game. Both teams RPI is in the 50's and we are at home. Kentucky has a quick turnaround on this game. They played a late away game at the barn on Saturday night and now have to travel to Tuscaloosa on Tuesday. This is not a great Kentucky team.
Bama 68-63. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: Jamos on January 22, 2013, 10:50:50 AM It's all about how well the defense plays, this is what drives the offense.
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: ricky023 on January 22, 2013, 12:50:07 PM I sure wish our team the best. If we play defense better we can and should win this game. Rebounding I think is still the answer, we need to rebound great. We don't need to get caught up in their game speed but play at our on pace. Let us go get them this time. RTR!
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: BAMAWV on January 22, 2013, 02:02:25 PM So far we have been able to out-athlete our opponents. Even win a few games that were against teams that were fundamentally better. This approach, comes with its drawbacks-- 27% shooting is one. But Kentucky can match up man for man all day long. Our 1/2 court offense is awful. We play best at 90mph. Kentucky has young guys that we can rattle--much like what we did with full court pressure against TAMU. My best hope is pmull's theory on the Kentucky travel nightmare.
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: 2Stater on January 22, 2013, 02:19:24 PM Kentucky's got some big ole boys too, so I don't see us getting the rebounding edge. Bama will have to out-hustle them and play great defense to win this game. They got some timely steals from aTm that helped them win that game. They will need to do that early and often again tonight. If they do, that should help them score more in transition, which is what they're good at. The more we have to go to the half court offense, the less chance we have, unless we pick and screen better than we have in the past.
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: BAMAWV on January 22, 2013, 03:31:24 PM One exception to my 90mph theory is Lacey. If he does not set up and square himself to the basket, his shot may end up on the 3rd or 4th row. But we cannot get bogged down in a 1/2 court game. Even defensely we have not been stellar in the 1/2 court game. Once you get past our talented front court, our "orchard is ripe for the picking".

Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: BAMAWV on January 22, 2013, 08:58:39 PM Shooting is horrible.. About the same as always. Lacey cannot shoot unless he is given a chance to square up. UK athletes will not allow that. But if a couple of 3s had gone we would be close. Changing baskets always helps-- or hurts if you are shooting really well.Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: BAMAWV on January 22, 2013, 09:14:14 PM 1 point game/ 15:39 #+

CAG has really done a job on Jacobs and even Gueye. Jacobs came into his own against A&M. He had his by far best game tonight. Kentucky shooting dropped off in 2nd half and their rebounding edge in the 1st half was matched by the Tide in the 2nd. Releford played his steady game but I'll give this win to Jacobs and Gueye. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: Catch Prothro on January 22, 2013, 10:24:03 PM Bama wins by 4-- 59-55 #+ Friendly refs tonight too, especially in the second half (first half, not so much).CAG has really done a job on Jacobs and even Gueye. Jacobs cleaned up several missed shots with put backs. Gueye actually had an impact, now he just needs to learn where the basket it, where to stand and jump. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: Catch Prothro on January 23, 2013, 07:23:07 AM Bama seems to be playing better in the second half. Part of that, I think, is opposing teams are wearing down. That might be true of Kentucky, which had a quick turnaround of road games.
But also, CAG made some key adjustments at half-time v. Kentucky, the most important was changing from a full-court to half-court press. Kentucky had no problem breaking the full court press, but in the second half Bama's half-court defense took over the game, shutting down Kentucky's offense, and getting several turnovers. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: 2Stater on January 23, 2013, 07:24:46 AM Gueye really becoming a very good defensive force. Team hustle down the stretch was great. Ky may not be the Ky of old, but any win over them is a great win. Congrats to the Tide!
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: pmull on January 23, 2013, 08:15:36 AM Good coaching job by CAG. This is the second game in a row the halftime ajustments have been spot on. We over came the KY 9 point lead and out played them in the second half.
We only turned the ball over 6 times. That is great against the long arms of KY. Even being out rebounded 44-32 we took 57 shots to KY 56. Defense in the second half was outstanding. Effort was great. The press was not working so CAG made the decision to go to a half court defense and force them to hit shots with a man in their face. KY scored 22 second half points. We are starting to get both offensive and defensive help in the post. Jacobs has really upped his game in the last two weeks. He had 14 pts and Gueye had 4 pts. Believe it or not we blocked 9 shots which equals the 9 shots blocked by KY. Gueye had 5 of the blocks. Coleman looked good with a 15,383 sellout crowd. The team gave them plenty to cheer about in the second half. We are 4-1 in SEC play which puts in 3rd place. We have worked our way back into NCAA Tournament discussions. We go on the road to Knoxville Saturday for a 1:00 game against Tenn. Roll Tide! Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: pmull on January 23, 2013, 08:21:22 AM According to Warrennolan.com our RPI improved to 51. Our strength of schedule is 29.

The big guys are really starting to contribute. We just need to figure out how to play like we did in the 2nd half for the whole game and we could beat anybody.
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: SUPERCOACH on January 23, 2013, 10:10:57 AM Also, they mentioned during the broadcast that we lead the SEC in 3 point shooting this year. What a remarkable turn around from last year with basically the same players. All of that hard work they did over the summer is paying off.
Last year we had no outside game and everybody played zone on us. This year our inside game has been nonexistent at times. If the big guys continue to improve we will be a pretty good team. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: pmull on January 23, 2013, 10:36:36 AM We were 2-13 on 3 pt attempts last night for 15.4%. We shot 36% for the game. We won this game with our second half defense. We held UK to 22 second half pts.
I can't say enough good things about the play of Jacobs and Gueye last night. Gueye blocked 5 shots and altered several more. He had 4 pts and 5 rebounds in 18 minutes. Jacobs is getting better each game. He has lost 15 pounds since the season started. He was slow to recover from an ankle injury. He had 14 pts last night. Several of his buckets were offensive rebound put backs and tap ins. CAG is giving Andrew Steele a lot of credit for his senior leadership. We are 10-1 with Steele and 2-5 when he was injuried. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Kentucky Tonight (ESPN 8:00) Post by: ricky023 on January 23, 2013, 11:46:24 AM I only got to watch the 2nd half, so I couldn't complain about 1st half. I do know they looked great in the 2nd half especially on the final run hitting all Free Throws. Good job. RTR!
