Title: Alabama Hosts Rival Auburn Tonight (6:00 ESPNU)
Post by: pmull on February 26, 2013, 08:02:11 AM
Alabama is tied for 2nd place in the SEC at 10-4. We have won 6 of the last 8 and 10 out of the last 13. Auburn has one win in their last 12 games and it game against us. we need to put them in their place tonight.

Quote
“We’re looking forward to getting back on the court and facing our in-state rival, Auburn,” UA head coach Anthony Grant said. “Obviously we are coming off of a tough road loss in our last game, but I think our guys have been able to put that behind us and understand that we’ve got to take care of today. Our focus right now is on Auburn; the last time we played them was a very tough defeat. I felt like we got outplayed in a lot of ways and a lot of it was in the effort department, so we’ve got to refocus and understand that we’ve got to play extremely well. If you look at the series, when our two teams get together, pretty much every game has come down to the wire. Pretty much every game is a battle when our two teams get together, so we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

Alabama and Auburn will meet for the second time in 20 days when the teams square off on Tuesday night. In the first meeting between the two squads, back on Feb. 6 at Auburn Arena, the Crimson Tide were held to only 37 points in a 49-37 loss to the Tigers. It was Auburn’s only victory in its past 12 contests.

The Crimson Tide (18-9, 10-4 SEC) enters the game tied for second place in the SEC standings. Most recently, the Tide had its four-game winning streak snapped with a triple overtime 97-94 loss at LSU on Saturday. Junior guard Trevor Releford scored a career-high 36 points on 14-of-18 shooting from the floor in the losing effort. In addition, he became the school’s all-time steals leader, recording three steals in the contest. He now has 178 steals during his three-year career. Sophomore guard Rodney Cooper added 18 points and a team-high nine boards.

In the last meeting, the Tide showed early that it was the superior team. Then the inexplicable began to unfold. I would like to see a packed house tonight, rejuvenating our pre-LSU efforts and setting the tone for a run at the SEC Tourney and beyond.

You rarely see lane violations on FTs-- Gueye averaging one a game. Goofball.

Well, we have missed 11 of 12 shots. The usual crappy, ugly offense for the Tide.

It was 23-13 at the half in the last game we played the Barn. Auburn is a lousy team and we should blow them away.

Jacobs picks up 4th PF-- he needs to learn ro make'em count on easy put backs for opponents.

He finishes with a double-double for the night.

Finally, a solid game, even if it was against a lousy team. Releford, Randolph, Jacobs, & Obasohan all played a good game. Now, if we can beat Florida, look out!

Obasohan is coming along.
Jacobs looked like the player he was at this time last year, finally.
And Releford has been on fire, he's got the madness.

A good win against a bad team. We did what we had to do.

Now we go to Florida on Saturday and Ole Miss next Tuesday. Both good teams. Both games on the road. These games are critical to our NCAA hopes. We need both games to be comfortable. A split is imperitive.

We remain in a 2nd place tie with Kentucky assuming they beat Miss State tonight. State is terrible. We have the tie breaker over UK with the head-to-head win. We are one game behind Florida. The winner of Saturday's Bama - UF game will be the SEC leader.

This may sound crazy, but 2 keys to the Tide making the NCAA Tourney could be Nick Jacobs & Obasohan. Naturally, we have to have strong play from Releford & Lacey, but if Jacobs can score and rebound and Obasohan can contribute some scoring & good ball handling, we might surprise some folks. This may turn out to be a pipe dream, but Jacobs has shown potential if he can just keep playing hard we have a chance to do something as a team.

Florida lost last night, so Bama is just one game behind.  It appears we are still ahead of Kentucky, having played one more game?

UK plays Miss State tonight. a win will have us tied. We win the tie breaker if we are tied due to our head-to-head win. Same with UF if we beat them.

We have been saying for awhile that Jacobs is our only hope of getting any scoring from the post position. He has had a few big games this year. He had a double-double when we beat UK and he went against Noel all game. No doubt when Jacobs plays well we are a much better team.

Obasohan is a scrappy player. He is a big improvement over Ben Eblen as a back up. He can handle the ball, score, penetrate, play defense and shoot free throws. He plays a lot like Releford.

Who is this Lacey guy, of which you speak? Let's hope he quickly turns things around, but he was in our way beating Auburn yesterday. His points came in mop up. Obasohan is a project and I wouldn't start hitching wagons to him just yet. Lastly, Jacobs did enough to offset the damage done by Chubb, the Auburn big man. HTH
