Post by: Jamos on February 27, 2013, 06:03:29 AM
Alabama used a four-run fifth inning and added another run in the seventh to defeat the Samford Bulldogs, 5-4, on Tuesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. With the win, the Crimson Tide improves to 7-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-5 overall.

Hitting seems to have improved... is it the bats?

A win on a cold rainy night. We lost these type games a year ago. The 7-1 record is much better than I expected. Our young team is getting experience and gaining confidence each game.

A quick review of the stats show Taylor Guilbeau did not have the type start he had last Tuesday when he beat Southern Miss. However, the relief pitching got the win and saved the game. Good to see the relief pitchers holding the lead late in games in year.

We host Tulane in a three game series this weekend. Tulane won the series last year in New Orleans 2-1.

I don't think our hitting for average has improved but the timing of our hits has improved. We are very productive with runners on base.

Our team batting average is .262. We have 54 singles, 9 doubles, 1 triple and two HR. So I don't think the bats are the difference. Timely hitting, 40 walks and 16 steals on 18 attempts is why we are scoring runs.

Another key stat is we have only made 6 errors in 8 games. That is very good in college baseball, especially early in the season. We have benefited from 17 errors from our opponents.

Last year, it seemed the lack of good relief pitching is what lost several games.  Thanks for the info.
