Title: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: pmull on March 26, 2013, 08:34:02 AM Quote The Alabama men's basketball team is set to host the Maryland Terrapins in the quarterfinals of the 2013 National Invitation Tournament on Tuesday night in Coleman Coliseum. Tipoff between the top-seeded Crimson Tide and the No. 2 seed Terps is set for 6:30 p.m. CDT and will be televised on ESPN. The winner of Tuesday's game advances to the semifinals, which will be held on April 2 in Madison Square Garden in New York City. Maryland (24-12, 8-10 ACC) travels to Tuscaloosa for the NIT quarterfinals after winning games against Niagara (86-70) in the first round and Denver (62-52) in the second round. Both contests were played in College Park, Md. The Terps are led by sophomore guard/forward Dez Wells, who enters the game at Alabama leading Maryland in scoring (13.2 ppg), second in assists (3.0 apg) and field goal percentage (.532) and is third in rebounding (4.9 rpg) and steals (33). Seven-foot center Alex Len is second on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg), and leads Maryland in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.9 bpg). http://www.rolltide.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/032513aaa.html Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: BAMAWV on March 26, 2013, 08:53:17 AM Quote Seven-foot center Alex Len is second on the team in scoring (11.7 ppg), and leads Maryland in rebounding (7.7 rpg) and blocked shots (1.9 bpg). They lost their opener to Kentucky and then won 13 straight. There was not a good team in that 13 game win streak. They went 11-11 after that. They had two wins over Duke and a win over NC St. They had bad losses to Va Tech (RPI 172), Ga Tech (142) and Boston College (108).
They were 18-3 at home, 3-7 on the road and 3-2 neutral. Their RPI is 61 and Alabama's is 59. Their SOS is 88 and ours is 87. On paper this game looks like a toss up with Bama getting a big edge for the home court. Maryland has a 7' big man who averages 12 pts and 8 boards a game. He could cause us trouble. Winner goes to New York. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: ricky023 on March 26, 2013, 09:51:21 AM Well I just believe our big men can out do their big men. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: BAMAWV on March 26, 2013, 09:52:13 AM Maryland is 3rd in the country in rebounding. They shoot a better % than us on the season that equates to about a 7 point advantage per game over the Tide. But that can be made up with defensive pressure. Be assured they will go down low to Len early and often to try and exploit our weak spot. But Jacobs can match their production in the lane if given the minutes. They shoot better than we do except for two things-- the Tide has been shooting better the last couple of weeks and the Tide defense will reduce their season average tonight. They can do this by collapsing the zone to limit the inside shooting, then keep a hand in Wells' face when they run their ball screens, quick hitters from inside out, or maybe even double zippers like FGC ran over San Diego State. The article gave all kinds of examples of meanness,--including yelling "How's your Grandma" at a player shooting free throws. His Grandma had just died. Recordings on answ. mach about killing a players family, to Kansas St. throwing bananas at the University of Kansas team when they first had black players. But according to Bleacher Report, the University of Maryland takes the rudeness cake with among other things, a parody off the song Rock and Roll Part II, because at UM the right to yell "You Suck" at other fans is a right worth fighting for (one post game riot left Terrapins facing criminal charges).

If Jacobs & Randolph keep playing inside like they have been, we will be in good shape there. I am eager to see if Obasohan can continue his level of play.

They are a good rebounding team. We will need solid play from our big guys and we must stay out of foul trouble.
We need to follow standard operating procedures. We need to play defense and make them play at our pace. We do not want to get into a high scoring game. We need to get to the free throw line and hit our shots. Most importantly, we need to avoid a long offensive drought. Gueye is terrible at defense and even worse at offense. He has no businessw in this game and we are going to lose because of him taking PT from Jacobs. CAG's fault-- not 9'GB's.

:( Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: BAMAWV on March 27, 2013, 06:53:05 AM If we were going to beat Maryland last night was our shot. They had 17 turnovers and 15 PFs, as well as rebounding 9 under their season average. They shot well, percentage wise, but much of that was at point blank range until Len went out with foul trouble. Even then, Md. was able to score down low with another forward (Layman), against our inside players. Lacey and Obasohan have been non-factors much of the season. Lacey had 8 assists but this was kinda negated with 4 turnovers. Maybe the replay will show we had no choice, but I was disappointed to see the ball in Lacey's hands at crunch time.
Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: pmull on March 27, 2013, 08:24:37 AM Maryland is a good team. I give them credit for coming to our house and leaving with the win and advancing to New York.
I hate to see the season end. I feel we were getting better as the season went on. I think we can take a lot of positives from this year into the offseason. Everybody comes back plus two incoming big freshman who I hope have the size, strength and body type to make an immediate impact. Maryland went on an 8 minute cold steak in the 1st half and we did not take advantage of it. They closed out the 1st half strong to take the 7 point halftime lead. I think CAG made some good adjustments and we played much better in the 2nd half. Maryland hit three three's in a row after we took the 1 point lead but we fought back and gave ourselves a chance to hit a shot for the win. That was a set play called from the bench for Lacey to end the game. Lacey got a good look but the shot was a little off. I think Lacey and Obasohan have been factors this year. Lacey has been asked to play point guard this year to free Releford up to be a scorer. It hurt his point production but helped Releford. Obasohan played well this year when given playing time. He is a freshman his time will come. Pollard was a non factor this year IMO. He was a 5 star player and the only recruit we got last year. CAG said he was our priority in recruiting. He has potential but he needs to add weight and strength this offseason while maintaining his quickness. I am high on this team for next year. We are missing a puzzle piece in the post from being an outstanding team. I hope we get that fixed for next year. We still have scholarships available for next year. I know CAG is looking for a point guard. I would not mind getting a JUCO power forward in this class. There is no excuse for a lane violation on a foul shot, especially on offense. 9'GB averages about 1 per week throughout the season. That is the equivalent of lining up in the neutral zone in football about every other game. What do you think CNS would have done if Jesse had lined up in the neutral zone once every other game last year? This shows a lack of focus/concentration and mental toughness IMO. I can't remember seeing him either. I'm hoping he works hard this summer and is able to help out in the paint next year. If he and Jacobs both do that, then I think we have a decent shot of winning the conference next year and making a nice run in March. If Jacobs comes back for practice fat and out of shape again, show him the door. Or even better, start making him sleep at Hotel Cochran. Jacobs has shown a lot of improvement over the year. If he had came in ready to play we might be talking about our Sweet 16 opponent right now. If the other guys work as hard this summer as they did last summer we will have a pretty good team. Our outside shooting was much improved this year over last year, especially Releford. No doubt that came from spending the summer in the gym. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: BAMAWV on March 27, 2013, 02:14:34 PM When you speak of Lacey and Obasohan on the same sentence, you make reasonable comparisons impossible. Obasohan was another one of CAG's projects. This one kinda/sorta worked out but would have been better had he come on around the 2nd Tennessee game. I am looking forward to seeing how he improves over the summer. He does seem to excite the crowd/team by hitting something during a lull.
Lacey has been consistent at making making 1 or 2 goals early on, then missing his next 6. He does other things to help the team, but so does everyone (almost everyone) else. If CAG had someone on the bench that was better offensively than Lacey, he'd be sitting. Back in December he won a couple with buzzer beaters. The announcers still bring that up as if it happens all the time. The only time I want him handling the ball with intent to shoot (he has a bunch of assists),--is when he is WIDE open. I asked the other day if you guys were watching Kansas, OSU, Duke, Miami, or maybe Indiana? That is where you want the Tide to be each year, a possible final four team, rather than a bubble team to the Dance. You will see how far we have to go, and arguing over whether Gueye, or Engstrom, or even Obasohan are in the picture come fall is not in my big picture, for getting where we need to be. You cannot say you want the Tide to compete with the big boys, then say you want to do it with those players. Obasohan is a freshman guard. He showed potential late in the year when he earned playing time. I expect him to be a good player for us next year in a role coming off the bench. Of course we want to be a top 10 team like Duke and Kansas. Hopefully one day we will get there on a consistant basis. I would love to back to being a top 25 team with legitimate Sweet 16 talent like we had with Wimp and CM Newton. Title: Re: Alabama Hosts Maryland In NIT Quarterfinals (6:30 ESPN) Post by: Marshal Dillon on March 27, 2013, 06:55:44 PM My concern is mainly with the coaching. Lacey was 5 star 2-time player of the year in Alabama, Pollard was a 5 star recruit, and Cooper, Randolph, & Jacobs were all 4 star recruits (Rivals). None of these guys have shown that level of play. Were they all overrated or is their talent not being developed? It's very frustrating to seemly recruit well but nothing seems to change. I would be interested in your comments on this.

Bama was down maybe 10 or 12 points and went on an amazing flurry of scoring-- maybe a 12-0 run to tie or take the lead. The Vols couldn't get the ball past the halfcourt line. I have never seen or heard Coleman as loud, so much electricity, as that Saturday afternoon. While basketball may never offer the same intensity as football, the disparity is not as wide as you would think, if our basketball program delivers a product where one can see the possibilities.
