My wife is a physician and does not think he will qualify for a transplant due to his age.

Good point. I don't know if being a former Vice-President or being wealthy & paying for everything himself allowed him to receive a transplant or not. I know there was a huge uproar when Mickey Mantle got a liver transplant at age 60, mainly because he was in poor health and had been a very heavy drinker for years.

Without knowing any specifics, I would guess the lung transplant procedure calls for opening a guy completely up, chest spreaders (to move the rib cage), and artificial breathing for a long period of time. I cannot imagine how traumatic that would be on a guy as old as CMM. So it must be a last resort type of procedure.

She says there are limited number of organs available & a long list of people needing them. They say providing organs to someone over 70, when someone 40 needs one is a "waste"
with the 70 year old having a limited life span left and at that age he is more likely to have organ rejection or not survive very long after surgery. I think the overall health and the recipient plays a major role for someone over, say, 70. Glad I don't have to pick who gets one and who doesn't.

I rally don't know how organ banks work. I am not sure if there are private "banks" which someone with money can go to and purchase an organ or if they are controlled by hospitals or what.
