Title: Basketball Recruits Visiting Tuscaloosa This Weekend

CAG is trying to fill the two open scholarships we have available.

According to various sources, there will be no less than three basketball recruits in Tuscaloosa for a visit this weekend.

Jaren Sina, a 6'2, 175 lb PG from New Jersey arrived in Birmingham today for a visit tomorrow. Ricky Tarrant, the 6'2, 190 lb PG who is transferring from Tulane will also be in Tuscaloosa for a visit. And finally, Algie Key, a 6'4, 180 lb SG from Barton County Community College will reportedly be in Tuscaloosa as well this weekend for a visit. Key is considered one of the best JC guards in the country after averaging 17 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. He was also a two-time JC All-American his two years at Barton. It could be a very interesting weekend for Coach Grant and his staff.

True, but two of the three recruits will not be entering as freshmen either.  We will need guards though after next year.

I notice also that when Engstrom graduates we only have )NE FR. Center. I would think we need help here also. I will support CAG though no matter what till he shows he can not do the job. RTR!

We need to get one more into the system this year IMO. He does not have to play next year but he needs to learn the system. Tarrant can't play next year anyway as a transfer. CAG has been wanting Sina. If we can not help next year he could redshirt and have 4 years left. Key is not a point guard. He plays more of a Randolph role. According to his JUCO stats he is a scorer and we need that.

We need to get to 13 on scholarship. You will not have playing time for all of them but competition will make the team better.

The rule of thumb is to have at least 5 guards on a BB roster. The guards run the offense, shoot from outside, handle the ball, and use their quickness on defense & offense.

I think CAG is happy with Taylor and Hale as his two big recruits. I also think Pollard will make a lot of progress in the off season. I think we need at least one guard in this class.

I'm just hoping these guys can shoot, that can make up for the lack of size in the middle.

I forgot about Pollard, but I just don't know if he's the type to battle on the inside like Greene did. Plus, if Engstrom can come back it would really help the inside depth. Some interesting possibilities next year.

I do not feel very confident about Carl. He has bad hands, slow feet, and doesn't really feel the position. It's not really his fault or anything. He's a tall guy playing basketball, not a tall basketball player playing basketball. I have said before that we need to get an oversized version of a tennis ball launcher and launch bballs at him by the the hundreds from all angles to improve his hands. When he gets that mastered we need to fit him with a plastic guard around his chest, like they use with dogs to keep them from licking their wounds, to train him not to lower the ball once he catches it.

Excellent analysis & observations. I have been worried about his hands, too, but I thought I read that he was an excellent handball player in Sweden. I thought he was showing good movement & enthusiasm before his injury, but he is definitely a gigantic question mark for the coming season.
