Title: BR: Catching Up with "The Deuce", David Palmer
Post by: pmull on April 25, 2011, 08:25:45 AM
Quote:
The coaches knew they had something special in Palmer as soon as the let him start fielding punt returns in practice. The first team members found trying to tackle him was like catching a greased cheetah.

He wore number number two and was known as "The Deuce" and he was the Mr. Excitement of his day at Alabama. Every time an opposing team punted to him, opposing coaches held their breath until he was wrestled to the ground.

He was a mere 5'9'' in cleats and maybe never got over 170 pounds wet, but as his coach, Gene Stallings once told us, "He is lightning a bottle and I'm glad I can turn him loose on Saturdays instead of having him turned loose on me."

Marvel over some of highlights of David's time at Alabama, just turn down your speakers.
And that began the nickname, "The Deuce on the Loose" and then just "The Deuce".

Before the "Wildcat" was common or even called the "Wildcat", Alabama called it "The Deuce." He was just ahead of his time.

I was at the Tennessee game at Legion Field when he made the 2 point conversion to tie the game right at the end.  It was standing room only that day (at least for students), and I was standing behind the goal post on the opposite end of the field from the end zone where we scored.  I was watching the play from behind the offense.  Everybody in that place new exactly what was about to happen, and there wasn't a thing that UT could do about it.  From my angle I could not tell when he crossed the goal line, so I just listened for the crowd reaction from the other end of the stadium.  I have never felt so confident about a play with the game on the line.  That was Alabama's last tie.  Overtime was adopted not long after that.

I was at that game too. There were a lot of Tenn fans there. We had a long winning streak and they thought they had the game won. The Deuce made several great catches on that last drive to score the TD which set up the 2 point conversion. Palmer is one of my all time favorite Bama players.

You probably heard me then.  I was the one yelling "Roolll Tide!        Roolll Tide!        Roolll Tide!        Roolll Tide!" on that last drive.

:D

I remember the winning streak as well.  It started the year before the NC after we lost to UF in the Swamp, which was our only loss that year and was early in the season.  Then of course 13-0 in 92.  I was getting those $4 (I think) student tickets back then.

Davied Palmer actually carried us to a tie with Tenn. the game we tied in. If it wasn't for him, we would have another pitiful lost to them. RTR!
