Title: Two Alabama signees choosing college over pro baseball
Post by: Jamos on June 07, 2013, 09:11:35 PM
Well, some good news for a change. I know CMG had to have had a smile on his face after these decisions were made.

Good news for CMG and the Tide.

More kids are choosing to play college ball than spend 3-5 years in the minors. I read recently that the SEC has better competition than the minors until you get to Double A. A kid misses out on a lot if he does not get the college experience. If you have the talent pro ball will be there 3-4 years down the road.

Here's the writeup from the Tuscaloosa News, it's a little better.

Eicholtz was projected to be picked in the 3rd round. His fast ball is in the low 90's. Good looking freshman prospect.

Quote
Eicholtz wowed professional scouts this spring, posting 82 strikeouts in 48 innings with an ERA of 0.73.

Haynie is 6-5 225 catcher that hits for power. Even if Wass is the starting catcher we need a power hitting DH.

These two guys can really help our team.

Bama was very fortunate that Brett Booth cleaned up his act and was able to fill in as a catcher again this year. Barring anymore bad luck, they should be solid in the catcher position next year.

We did not lose any underclassmen in the MLB draft. I was concerned Wade Wass and Austen Smith might get drafted. I assume they made it clear they wanted to come back to Alabama or they would have been late round picks.

Seniors Charley Sullivan (29th rd) and Brett Booth (34th rd) were selected. Good for them.

I'm very glad that Brett Booth got a chance at the big leagues. I used to bowl with his grandfather, James "Speck" Shirley, and what an athlete he was. He had a short stint in the minor leagues but came back to Tuscaloosa to star in whatever sport he chose to play. He was inducted into the Alabama Softball Hall of Fame in 1992 and always carried a 200 or better average in bowling.

"Speck" died in 2011 and I wish he could have lived a little longer to see Brett follow in his footsteps.

Man it may be a better season next year than anyone thought. If good players are coming we will get more. RTR!
