Title: Alabama Baseball Summer Update
Post by: pmull on July 10, 2013, 04:16:48 PM
Updates and stats on Bama players playing in wood bat leagues this summer.

Quote
This summer, 14 players from the current Alabama baseball team roster continue to play in five different leagues across the country. Six guys are playing in the prestigious Cape Cod League, four are in the Northwoods League, two are in the Texas Collegiate League and one is playing in the New England Collegiate League and the Florida Collegiate League.

The six players in the Cape Cod League are Ben Moore, Keaton Haack, Spencer Turnbull, Kyle Overstreet, Jon Keller and Justin Kamplain.

I think this is great for the every day guys, but I hope none of our pitchers burn themselves out.

These summer leagues are very good for the players. The college season is very short. All these guys need more work. They also get to play with some different teammates, see different pitchers/batters and get more coaching from a different staff.

I think we will be a much better team next year.

Looks like pitching and hitting needs lots of work from the players, hopefully the competition is that good.

I know the Cape Cod League is the top wood bat summer league for college players. The competition is very good. Some of the stats are that that good but it will made them all better players. This is a very good experience for our young guys.

I wonder if these leagues have a MLB connection. Are they affiliated with a certain MLB team?

 ???

Yes, they have MLB connections. The Cape Cod league regularly puts former players in MLB and the minors. So much so the league is partially funded by MLB.

Check out this website for information on the league, players and former players:

The Cape Cod League is VERY impressive.

One in seven current MLB players played in the Cape League. In the June 2012 First-Year Player Draft, 229 CCBL alumni were drafted, with 20 CCBL alumni players chosen in the first and supplementary rounds.

During the 2012 Major League Baseball season there were 253 former Cape League players who played on MLB rosters.

From what all of you are saying about the caliber of the different leagues, these players will come away with a great experience in taking their play to another level. This just adds to the anxiety of what Bama may do next Spring

I think this is a great opportunity for our players. The college season is short so this gives them more playing time. I have also heard the coaching in these summer leagues is very good.
