Title: Report: Alex Rodriguez Suspended Thru the End of 2014 BB Season
Post by: Marshal Dillon on August 05, 2013, 01:58:24 PM
Breaking news.

Quote
Rodriguez, who will miss 214 games if the suspension is upheld, had told friends before the announcement that he will appeal and “fight to the end.”

Twelve players have already accepted 50-game suspensions for violating baseball’s drug policy, Ken Rosenthal reports, citing sources.

Bad for ARod and the Yankees. He has to sit out over a year (once his appeal is denied, which it will be since ain't no way Selig is going to let this slip through his fingers). For Yankees, this means he stays on the payroll, so they can't dump is salary. Even if they can him, they are still on the hook for about five years and $114 million.

Too bad they didn't ban him from baseball along with all of the others that got caught. If MLB is going to stop this sort of thing they have to send a stronger message than suspending players, kick their rear ends out of baseball. JMHO ;)

#+, I must agree with you. Even MLB is starting to look nasty. RTR!

This is the biggest deal that MLB has made of the PED use to date. It remains to be seen if this will be effective or not. One thing is for sure, the image of MLB is tainted and will take a long time to repair, even if the problem is stopped in its tracks today.

I agree with you, J, about A-Rod. He got a free pass the first time and didn't learn his lesson. He should be banned.

What irks me is that he supposedly referred a lot of the other players to BioGenesis & continually lied to MLB investigators. His ego is so huge he will NEVER admit to anything. What a piece of sheep. The Yankees deserve him & I'm laughing that they are paying him $20 mil a year to be on injured reserve and not producing much.

While I am all for kicking his butt out of the league for good, the only downside as I said before is that the Yankees get to dump a huge contract and free up money to go after more high-priced talent.

IMHO this whole list of suspensions is a mess.  It was made out that there was going to be a long list of major leaguers suspended.  Well about half the list were minor leaguers + two who are freelance players not even in official minor leagues. Too much ado about too little.  MLB and Commish look small.

A-Rod makes $25MM/year but Yanks have insurance that is covering (I think) 80% of his salary as long as he is injured.  That gives Yanks incentive to keep him on the DL.  Whether they really did this or not, I don't know.  But the $$$ incentive was there.  Yanks won't have to pay A-Rod while he's suspended but his contract will resume after the suspension which could = about $80MM.  Between this years missed games and upcoming suspension, Yanks could save maybe $40MM which ain't chopped liver.

Not sure the Commish's suspension (211 games) will be upheld.  Suspect it will be reduced to 50 - 150 games.  Maybe negotiated down.  Don't think Selig has authority to do what he did and I'll opine that he just went with the 211 games to set out a position in appeal process and in negotiations. Players assoc is defending A-Rod on this point.

Finally, IMHO, A-Rod wanted to get back to play as many games as he could this season to find out how his body will hold up.  Kinda think that will affect his approach to the appeal process, i.e. if he really feels he can't play at major league level anymore, he might retire and tell Selig and the Yanks to go stick it.

Lots of stuff to happend yet and a good bit of it will be behind the scenes.

Just MHO as a baseball fan.
