Tiger got the birdie.
He's -1 and 1 stroke back.

Lots of folks at -2 already.  Announcers saying "expect a 64 today"; course is playing easy, despite being narrow and having high rough.  No wind yet; greens holding.

Tiger middle of fairway on the 14th (teed off with a 5 iron!).   :dunno:

Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 09:00:22 AM
Tiger pars the 14th.

8 tied at -2.

Tiger seems to be steady with the putter (has speed figured well), and his irons are good (as they were last weekend).  No need for a driver on this course, and he hasn't even pulled the 3 wood yet.

15th is a tough little par 3 (180 yards).

Tiger makes a good shot (8 iron?), 10' below the hole.

David Toms and Robert Garrigus move to -3 (leaders).

Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 09:10:49 AM
Tiger got his 10' birdie at the 15th.  He's one back of the leaders.

Keegan had a poor start, struggling with drives and putts.  But he also got a birdie at 15, and is at even now.

7 of the 10 leaders are playing the back nine (Tiger included).

16th:

Tiger hits a 3-wood.  Missed it a bit, but on the fairway.

addendum: Tiger lags a 60' putt to 10".  Par.
David Love with a great (tree-assisted) shot to save par.
Keegan gives back a shot with a poor putt from inside 8'.

17th (450-yard par 4):

Tiger with 3-wood; missed right (intermediate rough).
Second shot from under trees to just short of green; okay lie in fluffy grass.
Flop shot to 5'.
Par.

David Hearn now at -4 thru 11 (2 tied at -2).

Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 09:53:16 AM
18th is a par 4 (500 yds):

Tiger hits fairway wood to the ... fairway.  Davis and Keegan miss to the left (with drivers).
2nd shot into green-side bunker.
Blasts out to 4'.
Par.

Garrigus joins Hearn at -4 (leaders).
Toms at -3; 9 others at -2, including Tiger.

1st hole (Tiger's 10th of the day).
Tough little par-4 hole, 460 yards.

Tiger hits 3-wood, and splits the fairway.
2nd shot with ~7 iron to within 15' below hole.
Maybe a mishit on the putt; 10".
Par.

Interesting: Keegan Bradley's caddie hides cans of Pepsi on the course for Keegan.  Hides them in trees, animal burrows, etc.  Doesn't want to carry them al day!   :dunno:  Must work; birdied the 1st just now: E par.

Still no wind at all at Oak Hill.  Possibility of rain later.  Rained overnight.

Paul Casey has birdied 4 of last 5 holes: -2 (lots of up and down for him).

No. 2, 401 yards, par 4: A long iron off the tee will keep the ball short of deep bunkers on both sides of the fairway. Approach shots will need to stay below the hole.

Update:
Hearn at -4
Furyk at -3 now at -4 also
Tiger and 8 others at -2

Tiger off 2nd tee with a low iron to a perfect position.
2nd shot (7 iron) to within 3.5'.
Pushed it; par.

No. 3, 214 yards, par 3: Deep bunkers guard both sides of this small green, and the worst miss is long and right.

Tiger (after a missed opportunity at #2) makes a mighty swing; ball lands 12' from hole and stops right there.
Tiger's putt for birdie: powered thru the break.
Par.

2 tied for 1st at -4 now;
3 at -3;
lots (~6) of players at -2.

You know I like to watch golf, but I actually pull for the young guys to win. I like to see them get some accolades, one or two not always the bigger than thou attitude. JMHO. Not upset. I think golf takes and expert game that just not any one person can do. It looks to be hard work. RTR!

No. 4, 570 yards, par 5: This typically is the best birdie chance at Oak Hill.

Driver here at #4?  Yep.  What a dope (no need to hit a driver).  Tiger in the right rough.  Has to lay up, prolly.
2nd shot layup stays in the rough; no bounces off tree onto fairway.
3rd shot; Hits it heavy; bunker greenside.  Bad shot.
Chips to within 5'.
Lips out.  BOGEY.

Phil warming up.  Tees off in an hour.
Hearn at -5 now.
Furyk at -4.
3 tied at -3.

No. 5, 428 yards, par 4: The tee shot must travel through a chute of trees for 215 yards, and then avoid a creek that winds into the landing area at the 250-yard mark.

Hopefully Tiger throws away the driver.  He's turrible with it!  :lol2:
Tiger tees off with a 5-wood this time.  Down the middle.   :worship:
2nd shot to within ~20'.
Good birdie attempt, but grazed the cup; 3' left.
Par.

Keegan Bradley got another birdie: tied with Tiger at -1.

Light breeze on the course now.

Title: Re: 2013 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP In-Game Thread
Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 11:36:31 AM
No. 6, 175 yards, par 3: Four players made a hole-in-one during the first 90 minutes of the 1989 U.S. Open, and two players made an ace during the Ryder Cup in 1995. The green has a deep bunker on the right side and a creek that winds around the green on the left and front.

Update:
Hearn and Furyk at -5;
5 tied at -3.

Tiger hits a high shot that drops ~25' from the hole.  Keegan and Davis are inside him, both on the green.  Tiger's patience is being tested.
Tiger lags putt to 5', goes past the hole; poor by his standards.
Good putt; Par.

Title: Re: 2013 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP In-Game Thread
Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 11:53:46 AM
No. 7, 461 yards, par 4: This is one of the tightest driving areas with a fairway width of about 22 yards. A creek on the right side comes close to the fairway.

Update:
Hearn bogey at the closing hole drops him back to -4.
Furyk still -5 after 13.
Five at -3.
The breeze is stirring a bit more, but still less than 10k.

Tiger (-1) off the tee with an iron, but hits it heavy.  In the fairway, but not very long.
From 230 yards, Tiger hits just short of the green.
Chips just past hole: 3'.
Par.

Title: Re: 2013 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP In-Game Thread
Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 12:02:53 PM
No. 8, 428 yards, par 4: This is a straight hole, with fairway bunkers on the left side so deep that players might not be able to reach the green. Trees loom on the right side of the fairway.

Tiger hits a 3-wood to left side, on fairway...
2nd shot poor ("loose shot"); trap on short side.
Blasts to 12".
Par.

Update:
Jim Furyk   -6
David Hearn   -4
Robert Garrigus   -3
Paul Casey     -3   F*
Matt Kuchar   -3
Bill Haas   -3   F*
Marcus Fraser   -3

Dufner, S Stricker, Haas, Stenson all now at -2.  Sergio finished at -1.
Phil tees off at 12:45 our time.  TV coverage on TNT starting now.

No. 9, 452 yards, par 4: An uphill, dogleg right that has rough so deep on the right side that the only option might be to chip back out to the fairway.

Tiger with his 3-wood.  Just off the fairway, and on the wrong side.  He'll need a massive slice to get onto the green.
2nd shot: slices, but not enough.  He's 25 yards short and in deep rough.
3rd: Chops it from thick rough, but short and buries in trap.
4th shot from against lip of the trap: explodes to 15'.
Bogey putt lips out. Double. Tiger finishes at +1.

Phil is off, playing with Adam Scott, and Justin Rose.

Phil has been Phil; sprayed his first tee shots, then hit great chips to save par.  He's even after 1.  Just hit his tee shot (hybrid club) at 2nd to the right into deep rough.
Adam Scott hit a wild drive under trees, but scrambled and sank a 10' putt to save par.
Rory is looking good with his iron shots (that's different for him).

2nd hole.  As I said above, Phil's tee shot was into the deep rough.  His 2nd shot stayed in the rough, again deep.  He'll have to play a miracle shot to get onto the green and save par.  :dunno:

addendum: Phil managed to slam a shot from the rough (great power), reaching the green.  But he'll have ~15' for par... YES.  That's Phil.

:jump:

Phil on par-3 3rd.  Lucks runs out.
He sends a 7-iron left into rough.
Chips up to 17', but misses the putt.
Bogey.  Phil's +1.

Phil at par-5 4th.

He sends his 3-wood drive wide right.  Looks OB.  He's going to tee up again.
His provisional shot is right behind the first, hits a tree and a spectator, but stays in bounds.  Phil?   :dunno:

BTW, the wind is still very slight (~10k).

Just reported: Phil's 1st ball was OB; rolled down the street parallel with the course.

Rory was -3, but got a bogey, and made a great save to avoid another.

Title: Re: 2013 PGA CHAMPIONSHIP In-Game Thread
Post by: Chechem on August 08, 2013, 01:51:51 PM
Furyk finished at -5 (leader).
2 at -4.
4 at -3.

Phil at par-5 4th got out of the rough with his 4th shot, which stopped short of the green.  His 5th shot will have to be excellent to even get a bogey....

Phil decided to putt from 50 yards in front of the green.  Great putt, but rolls out (past) about 8'.  Phil misses the bogey; gets a double.  He's +3 after 4.

BTW, The cigar is at -4.

Phil hits his first fairway (with a fairway wood).  Congrats, "Thrill".

Par-4 5th.  Phil missed an opportunity from 18', but made par.

Adam Scott cruising: -2 (playing with Phil).  Chance for birdie at 6th.
Phil on green at par-3 6th, but a mile away from the hole.

BTW, the wind is up a bit: 15k.

This Idoki guy may be old enough to remember WWII (as a pilot!).  He's amazing.

Jimenez also.  Maybe he knew Generalisimo Francisco Franco (-3).  :dunno:

Adam Scott playing well; he's got another birdie: -3.

7th hole.
Notify the press; Phil hit a fairway.  He's not even carrying a driver, but is sending his tee shots everywhere (even onto highways - true).

Adam Scott also on the fairway.  He looks like a champ today; Phil and Tiger NOT....

Scott hits 3rd shot within 3'... gets the birdie (-4).
Phil misses the green right...
Chips past hole by 4'.
Par

8th hole.

Adam Scott with the honor.  Hits a fairway wood far down the fairway.

Phil looks tired.  His hair is a mess.  He's sweating, a little fat.
Phil uses the only wood he's got in his bag today (3 wood).  Better swing than before.  He's on the fairway, just a couple of paces from the left rough.

Rory on 9th green.  Gets his birdie.  Now he's at -3.

8th hole.

Adam Scott with the honor.  Hits a fairway wood far down the fairway... puts 2nd shot 8' left of flag...., sinks it for -5 after just 8 holes.

Phil looks tired.  His hair is a mess.  He's sweating, a little fat.
Phil uses the only wood he's got in his bag today (3 wood).  Better swing than before.  He's on the fairway, just a couple of paces from the left rough...
2nd shot pushed left, on the green but 30' from the hole.... lags to 2'.

Rory on 9th green.  Gets his birdie.  Now he's at -3.
The Cigar is at the 10th.  Puts his shot on the green for a chance at birdie.  He's -3.

Phil and Scott on 11th tee (after rain delay):

Phil with a 4-iron.  It's a par 3 hole; Phil is on the green (20' away).... He sends the ball to the hole and PLOP (Birdie).  :lol2:
Adam hits a similar club, but pulls it far left.  Well, the delay hurt him.  He's in deep rough....  He digs deep for it, and hits a gem to within 3'.  Wow...  Par

Westwood is at -3.  Maybe he can melt down again this week.

The rain has softened the greens.  They're all throwing darts now.

Rory at -2.
Jimenez at -4.
Westwood at -3.
Justin Rose at -3.

Phil (+1) on fairway at 12th.
Justin Rose (-3) hits driver into the rough (he must be stupid too).
Adam Scott (-5) hits iron from tee, and splits the fairway.

Wind is dead.

Phil at even par finally.  He was +3 after 4 holes.

Par-5 13th hole.

Phil with a 3-wood.  IT GOES FAR LEFT.  Cart path, near the creek.  No problem for 'The Thrill'.... Wow, it's almost touching the stones along the creek.  Only a lefty could play this..... Phil checks to be certain he won't hit a stone on the follow through, then swings a mighty stroke and WHACK, puts it on the fairway in play (whew, lucky  ).... Phil from 185 yards, 7-iron to left edge of the green (25' away for birdie).

Justin Rose in the fairway with an iron (he learned after blowing up that driver). ... Hits a high shot from 153 yards to within 10'.
Adam Scott with an iron; looooong and center cut. ... Big swing from 135 to within 17'.

Jimenez (The Cigar) still at -4 (saved par from 8' on the 14th).

Short par-4 14th:

After pars for all 3 players, they line up to try again:

Phil with his 3-wood splits the fairway... chips up and putts in for birdie (-1).
Scott with a driver does the same... chips up and sinks the putt: -6.
Rose with a driver hits 30 yards short of the green... I don't know what he did.   :dunno:

Kaymer is -4 now.

#16 is a par 4.

Scott, Phil, and Rose were all around the green with their second shots.  Phil chipped to within 3'.  Scott with a long putt to within 4'.  They should all get pars.  But Adam Scott misses a short one, and gets a bogey: -5.

Rory blew a putt, and dropped to -1.
Kaymer dropped a shot: -3.
The Cigar (Jimenez) played 18 well, and has a chance at birdie there.  But he got a double bogey on 17, and is at -2 now.

This tournament looks like it is setting for a wild finish on Sunday.
I hope so.  I'll watch it, if there are TVs in Arkansas.   :lol2: :lol2:

Par-4 17th:

Adam Scott missed right in the rough.  ... 2nd shot from there into rough just short of the green. ... Chipped to within 3'.  Par.
Phil on the fairway. ... 2nd shot a goodie, on the green to within 15'. ... Missed the birdie: par.
Justin Rose hit the fairway, and had a good approach too. Good lag: par.

Kaymer dropped another shot on the 18th: -2.
Vijay got a birdie at 18th to go even.

Tough par-4 18th.  Dead calm.  Long shadows.  This hole is 498 yards.  You've got to hit the fairway, and you need to be long.

Phil (-1) has a 3-wood, and sends it far right off the fairway.  Oops.  :wall:
Adam Scott (-5) misses the fairway.  :wall:
Justin Rose (-3) also in the rough, and drops down deep.  :wall:

Rory finishes at -1.

2nd shots:
Phil is blocked by trees.  May have to go over the trees.  Impossible?  He's looking it over, maybe low.  He's tempted to try going thru a small opening... This could be very bad if he misses... slams it straight into the trees - WHERE??  :dunno: ... now he's going to pitch out from the rough (again) for his 3rd shot (par is 4)... now on fairway about 120 yards away... wedge is high and lands behind the hole, draws back to within 15' (for bogey).  This is just like Tiger (double at last hole). ... Phil rolls it over the lip: DOUBLE BOGEY for a +1 on the day.  Dumb dumb.  :wall:

Rose with hybrid... bunker next to green.  Should be okay... chips to 15'. ... Par?  No, bogey.
Adam Scott a boring good shot and chance to save par from 15'.  :lol2:  He's been the man today.  ...Here's his putt for par: PLOP (XLNT).

Zack Johnson back-to-back bogeys giving away shots.

Lol. That's their guaranteed money to pay their bills, there's nothing guaranteed in the golf tournament.

I wonder how much they make off endorsements, excluding the likes of Woods, Mickelson, etc..

The guy does have talent. He came out of nowhere last year and you just knew it was a matter of time before he won a major.
