According to Bham TV, his mug shot is no longer on the Tuscaloosa County web site. Something tells me this will be an indefinite suspension? smith needs to learn a very important life lesson.

Dumb is as dumb does and I wonder who he was with? CNS doesn't make an example of anyone. He has a standard set of rules and their penalties and if you break them, you pay the price, regardless of the severity of the penalty.

Well, maybe it's because we haven't heard much about GS this year.  He was coming on last season, and played against both UGA and ND.  I expected him to start this year; now he'll be lucky to play at all.

I hope this doesn't become a major distraction for the team. After hearing less than stellar reports on the scrimmages, it creates cause for concern.

The Man will enforce discipline upon him...and he will miss playing time..yet he is young enough..a soph...that hopefully he will be taught a valuable lesson, and it will reflect upon others on the team..to think ahead, and not repeat these actions.

If the deceased friend issue is legit I hope the coach pairs a measured punishment with compassion and support.

I hope his record is clean up to this point in time, if he's has some discipline issues in the past it may not go well for him.

CNS talked yesterday about having leaders on the team that see and prevent players from making these types of mistakes and he said the team needed more of them. He felt there were some that wanted to be leaders but weren't man enough to stand up to some of the players to prevent such happenings. He did allude to Rolonda McLain and stood by his statement that he never had any trouble out of Rolando. He said when Rolando spoke, everybody listened and it could have been because everybody was scared of him. We got a good laugh out of that.

Smith was a starter yesterday and was pretty much on the field all day. He will definitly be missed.

Does anyone know what punishments other coaches have used?  I agree with J, what type of record does he have up to this point?  This gives another player a chance to step up and be contributor.

True. This may have been the cause. Lets get this kid some help. He is trying to deal with the death of a friend. I still don't condone what he did.

when he tweeted that he couldn't get the kid off his mind I remember thinking
"hope he don't do something dumb"
then brushed it off that he wouldn't , someone would be there for him at
the U of A if he needed them ...

I think we forget that these giants we see on the football field are in
fact just kids in a mans body that still have kid problem solving skills

when something happens they are not sure just how to deal with maybe
this is one thing of what we get ... 

This is sad but CNS has brought in paid people to talk to these kids and remind them they have to Think. I really feel like if he is drinking and driving he needs help that football will not provide but I will stand by what CNS decides. RTR!

Just my opinion, but I'd expect a 2-4 game suspension if Geno mans up and does what he's supposed to do (which I think he will).

With that said, Coach employs numerous types of disciplinary measures.  I hope if it turns out to be just a game or two suspension that our fanbase doesn't overreact and think he's being lenient.  There were many who were quick to "throw him under the bus" yesterday on the break of this news.

Yeah, I was one of those who was pissed at first.  
Then I heard a rumor that Geno was friends with the kid who died.  Alcohol won't solve that, but who among us hasn't taken a drink after a shock (preachers excepted, Ricky).

I hope a decision of his suspension comes quickly. CNS doesn't usually take too much time on these types of situations. I would think we would hear something today or tomorrow. I'm going to guess 4 games.

That's pretty harsh. 
Just a guess, but I doubt CNS knows what he'll do until he meets with Geno; however, inquiring minds want to know.

Yes, he and the disciplinary committee or whatever they call the players' committee will meet with Geno and among themselves I'm sure.

Chech, you really think 4 games is too harsh? Maybe if CNS and the committee weigh in the fact of his friend's death, I guess they could come back with something less than that. If not, I think that would be about right. Of course, my predicter has been out of whack for a while now.

No, 4 is about what I expect too.  But I recall fishing trips and such during the past that kept the players out for fewer games.

Yeah, the fact that Geno was arrested is probably going to carry more weight than those you mentioned.

I would think that our Fulmer Cup points are pretty good right now. Higher than usual, anyway.

Not trying to sound holier-than-thou but I have seen SO MUCH agony, death, destroyed families & careers, I just can not feel bad for a drunk driver. Saying he's young or upset about a friends death is just a cop-out to me. Life is about being responsible. I know that sounds harsh, but what if he had killed someone, would folks still feel sorry for him?

Yeah, he's a true sophomore, so he's very likely to be under aged.

I have no sympathy whatsoever for him. The law is the law just as the rules are the rules. I have no hard feelings against anyone that chooses to  have a few drinks but they must realize that there is a big price to pay if you get caught by the police. I woke up one day and realized that and that is why I choose not to drink anymore.JMHO

I don't expect CNS to announce what his suspension will be unless he is dismissed from the team which I doubt. I expect the "we are handling this internally and he has some things he needs to do before we can come back to the team" type answer. Then I look for a two game suspension unless he has been in the doghouse before and I do not think he has.

I agree with this. I think Saban puts his foot down after previous embarrassing episodes by other players.

No one here is condoning what the young man did or trying to "give him a pass."

However, some of you have a tendency to be unforgiving based on life lessons that you've learned in your 40, 50, 60 or however many years on Earth.  Point being, we were all once 19 and not as wise.  Most of us learn lessons the hard way...not by our elders telling us about lessons they've learned.

Well my dad had a recipe for this foolishness. No he didn't take me behind the wood shed, he did his teaching in the living room. He took a belt to my sitting down place by the it quit burning I was crying "I will make better decisions." I have prayer for all the children I can because we all know they need it. RTR!

My dad helped me make good decisions by making his expectations clear, explaining why they were important, and by being the kind of dad, through his sacrifice and example, that I would not want to disappoint.

We should tell these highly minded folks that these kids and I mean all of them need prayer and football is a game. If playing helps them or not I leave to the coaches but if kicking off team and no education is right, then what do say? RTR!

what if you know that kicking the kid off the team means the end for him ?
or what if the kid was the coaches son ? would you still kick him off ?
my suggestion was to get ALL the facts first and not compare to three
situations to each other ... they are all different

if CGM wants to kick his player off then that's his choice
as it was CLM choice to do what he did  ...
CLM can go back and suspend his guy still if he wants to ...
CNS gave Geno one game ... end of story ,

There are different circumstances for each player.  People don't like to hear this, but it is true.  Also, why should he be punished more than what they do at other schools?  I actually though it would be worse and it still may be.  What if his replacement steps up and plays well?  I think one of the major factors you look at is his track record.  I think Saban state GS has not been in any trouble at all while at Bama.

I was surprised that CNS said as much about it as he did.  Geno must be a pretty good kid for CNS to say so during a discussion of his suspension.

Seems that CNS has changed from saying nothing about suspensions to explaining the basics.  I can see strengths in both.  Say nothing and everyone things you're hiding something.  Say too much and you're revealing details of the kid's personal life.

Let's just hope that the other players are watching this closely, and this will be the last of this year's misbehavior and missteps.  Just play football.

Probably because some might view the punishment as too light, so Saban is addressing the issue up front instead of having to answer questions and deal with endless press speculation.  We know how much Saban enjoys answering press questions unrelated to football.
