Title: Pickem contest
Post by: ricky023 on August 23, 2013, 10:17:35 AM
If this is the wrong place moderator please put it right place. Thanks.
Are we going to have a Pickem contest this year? If we are when will it start and will it be the same as in the past? RTR!

If SC has time for it, I'd sure like to play.  I always have fun losing to you guys.

I hope it returns. It was a lot of fun. It made watching other games a little more relevant. Lets play!

If SC does not have time we can set up an ESPN league. Let's see what SC has to say. If we have not heard from him by Monday I will set up a league and post how to join. If anyone has a better option let's hear it.

I agree.  SC does a better job than ESPN/Yahoo or anyone else would do.  But we know he's been busy.  So set up an alternative if necessary.

I think everyone hopes SC has time to start a pick'em contest again this year. It has been a lot of fun and SC does a great job with it.

Just in case he is too busy building a tree house I have created a College Pick'em on ESPN. This contest is different. There are ten games each win. You pick the winner. No point spread. You do have to pick a confidence level of each pick 1-10. If you feel good about a game give a confidence level of 10. Feel bad give it a 1. You must use all ten numbers. (You can not use 10 twice) If you get pick right you are awarded points based on your confidence level.

Here is how to join.

Go to ESPN.com
Clink on Fantasy Games
Clink on College Football Pick'em
(at this point you will have create a free ESPN account if you do not already have one)
Join a group. Our group name is CRS.
Password is RollTide
Make your picks

The ESPN site is easy to use. If you have any trouble let me know and I will do my best to help.

I like the confidence points style competition.  I've done that several years now.

Also, I think this link should take you right to the group page to join:

I like it too. Even if SC gets the CRS pick'em going I hope we can also get some guys to play the ESPN league as well.

Hopefully things will work out here on CRS, but if not, I have enjoyed doing it each year. SC has put in a lot of work in the past to make it possible for all of us.

It's obvious we are overpaying SUPERCOACH since he is not taking care of business on this site. I think we need to seriously consider cutting what we pay him by 50% to get his attention and get him on the stick in setting the Pick'em up. What do you all think about that?

It is a screwy page.
1. I fumbled with it until I realized that it wanted my old password (from a year ago).
2. If you're going to the page via Hannibal's link (previous thread page to this one), it puts you in after you simply add a password: RollTide (be sure to use capital letters for each word).
3.  How to join?  My name was already in the system from last year.  I just went to "My Entry" (as I recall).  May have to use your old password.

What's all the panic about?  :dunno:  Don't we usually post the games on Monday @ 5:00 on game week?

I am planning to do the contest again.  I am really busy right now but this will pass pretty soon I hope.

Does anyone have any suggestions for games?

I figure we could kick off the year with both of the Thursday SEC games.  Sometime tomorrow afternoon I will set up the contest with the 10 games we come up with.

Cecil Hurt recommends these games. Keep in mind Ole Miss at Vandy is a Thursday game. USCE plays No Carolina on Thursday as well.

Quote

Current Week 1 odds: Alabama -19.5 over VaTech... AU -14.5 over Wash St... Ole Miss-3 at Vandy... UGa -1.5 at Clemson... LSU -4 over TCU.

I direct this message to my fellow posters. Would it be more interesting if we all made, say, 3 recommendations (with reasoning for picks) for the pick'em each week, instead of making a list of 10 choices by one or two posters? Then, SC could make the final decision. If this does not work for SC due to his work schedule or puts more work on him, then we could stick to how we do the games now. Just wondering if this idea is too cumbersome or just a bad idea. I appreciate you guys input. SUPERCOACH, if this does not work for you, that's fine with me. Not trying to stir anything up, just trying to make the discussion more involved and interesting.

In past years, it was hard to get timely input, so I usually listed the main games and people commented.  But it's not a monopoly -- the more input the better.  If you want to be the one coming up with a list, or have a game or three you want to include, go for it.  I usually just go to ESPN and pick out the televised games, so I don't care if they get picked or not -- just trying to make the selection process easier.  I do like the idea of several people coming up with suggestions; if it happens, great.

MD, feel free to make suggestions whenever you want.  If you can post them by Sunday evening you will probably beat everyone and get the first crack at it.  If there isn't a thread already for the next week, go ahead and start a new one.

Anybody that wants to can make suggestions.  CP doesn't monopolize it at all, he just does some of the grunt work for me, which I greatly appreciate.

CP, I appreciate you taking the initiative to get things going.  It makes things a lot easier for me to already have a list of games ready that I just enter in to the contest for that week.

I am about to enter the games for this week, so this is the last call for suggestions.  MD, is there a game you would like to add that isn't already on the list?

My post is not directed at anyone. In the past, I would submit a list of 10 games but I got to thinking that maybe we could draw more people into the conversation if folks could make 3 or 4 recommendations.  You're right about being timely with the suggestions and it might not work because of that. Just trying to draw in more posters & comments. Plus, I really do not want SUPERCOACH to feel hard-pressed if this is too cumbersome for him. I have a very thick hide and am interested in what our fellow posters think. IF SC or others think it's a stupid idea, I won't go into a corner and start weeping, but I might look for a tall building.

Doh!  Kentucky/Western Kentucky was already in the list.  I guess we will go with Arky.
Arky works.  Who knows what they'll have this year!   :dunno:
Coach B gets a rude awakening into SEC play come September 28 through the month of October.  Four weeks in a row:  Texas AM, Florida, USCe, then Bama.  I don't think they get their first SEC win until November.

I think it is easier for SC if we create a 10-team list and come to a consensus before he has to post the games.

You just jogged my memory. I think SUPERCOACH said something like that last year or the year before that. He's getting older & slower so I guess I will leave him alone.

Funny, but I've lost so often and for so many years that I expect it now.
I'm just wondering which teams will be this year's surprise failures!

Some games we did not pick from which could result in a surprise are:

#11 FSU/Pitt

#22 Northwestern/California

BYU/Virginia

I'm picking Pitt to beat FSU in a huge upset. Just a huge hunch.

Pittsburgh might be without its top two tailbacks when it opens ACC play Monday night against Florida State.

Junior starter Isaac Bennett (5-feet-11, 205 pounds) suffered a knee injury at the end of the first week of fall camp and has had no contact since. Bennett, who was the third-teamer last season, has rushed for 378 yards and five TDs in the past two seasons.

True freshman James Conner (6-2, 230) was set to be the backup, but he suffered a shoulder injury late last week; coaches are hopeful he can practice this week.

So, what is the listing format?

How about the top 3, or 4, teams from each division of the SEC with the remaining 2, or 4, teams coming from the highest ranked non-SEC teams?

I don't know?

I am fine with whatever.

Just a simple post with the games you like that week is all that is needed.  Your logic is basically what we end up doing each week.  If we have to pick some "filler" games we usually go for the lower tier games with SEC vs. some little school.

Does Wall-E still get the scores backwards sometimes, or has that been corrected?

I forgot about that.   The problem was the neutral site games.  The betting site with the line doesn't always agree with ESPN in regards to who is designated to be the home team.  If I don't enter it so that it matches ESPN then WALL-E gets the scores backwards.  The scores come down with the visitor score first then the home team score, so if you got them backwards you end up with the scores backwards.

We have several neutral site games this week.  I should double check to make sure that I matched ESPN.

There was also a problem on busy Saturdays when the updates where coming too fast.  ESPN was dropping some of the updates if you didn't check quickly enough, so you would miss some score changes.  They don't send down the actual score, they send down a message like "home team scores 3".

I know this is probably more technical information than mosts folks want to hear about.  But the take away is that I have plans to rework the score updates to resolve all of those issues.  In the meantime I don't let WALL-E finalize the results for the week until I double check the scores.

I really thought that TCU would win, or LSU win by 3.  TCU has some chances.
LSU's overall weight just wore them down.  Fast teams (TCU, etc.) need lots of points and possession changes.

Les Miles poor coaching was on display last night, again.  He wins in spite of his lack of skill and talent.

Richt looks tired.  Kind of reminds me of Tuberville in his last year at boogerU.

Great games to start the 2013 CFB season.

I will be lucky to finish the season out above .700.

Low to mid 60's should win it, and that is with us dropping your two worst weeks.  It is really tough to pick against the line and go above .500.

Three 9-1 records are unbelievable in 1 week.  That usually only happens about one time per year.  A lot of weeks, 7-3 with a good tie breaker will win it.

Marshal Dillon had a 9-1 record in week 6 of 2011.
Bama87 had a 9-0 record in week 11 of 2011.  We had a push that week that didn't count against you.
TideWest and XBAMA were both 9-1 in week 13 of 2012.

So it happens about twice per year.

There where a few weeks were the winner only had 6 correct.

Nothing like starting the season dead last. Maybe I should have to wear blue and orange all week as badge of shame.

That is way too much self flagellation for you to endure.

Dude, no. No way. Going 0-10 wouldn't even merit that kind of punishment.

By the way, congrats roll tide roll, 2, and phil for the 9-1 records.  #+

I have posted my Poll and again I have Oregon as my #1 followed by Alabama. If you look forward you will see I have no Ohio St. at this time and I won't until they beat somebody. I have Clemson and TA&M as my big movers. Hope fully we will see some of what this is going to be like in week 3. RTR!

Right, and as soon as we start believing that, you'll pick 9-1.
