Title: A few thoughts on VT
Post by: hscoach on August 30, 2013, 08:07:25 PM
Is this point spread to big.  I know Bama should be very good this year.  However, it is the first game of the year with a rebuilt offensive line.  VT seems to always be tough on D and seem to be one of the best in the area of special teams every year.  Also, they have a big strong and mobile QB.

I watched them a couple of times last year.  They've lost their edge.
Even their kicking game was poor.
Unless they've improved in every phase of the game, we have nothing to worry about (except AJ's foot).

Well to me point spread don't mean anything really. It is just there when you play pickem so be it. If CNS don't establish it in football to me it don't mean anything. JMHO. RTR!

That is good to know because I didn't watch them last year.

Bud Foster and their D has not lost their edge. I think we can stop them but I worry about us consistently moving the ball. VT always plays good special teams. I think we cover but it could be more difficult than we expect.

Anything can happen but I'm honestly not worried about this one.  (I hope the team doesn't have the same attitude though.)

They were terrible in special teams last year; at the bottom of the ACC.

Watch these highlights against Miami from last year.

Here's an article that discusses "Beamer ball" as a lost art at VT:

I just saw Beamer on ESPN.  He said that 11 potential starters for them didn't even make the trip.  He said they have a ton of Freshmen that are fired up and ready to go, but he said they have no idea what they are getting themselves into because they are just Freshman.  He also said he thought this might be the best team he has ever had to face off against.  So, he is setting expectations pretty low.  I don't think he is bluffing us either.

Are you boys trying to goad me into changing my score prediction to 98-0?  No worries, we got this one.

I think Beamer is going through what many older coaches have gone through, like Bowden, Paterno and even our beloved Bear. The recruiting is getting weaker because the recruits fear retirement of the head coach, during their athletic career at the university, so they go elsewhere.

VT has had mediocre recruiting classes at best over the last few years. The talent just isn't there anymore.

Injuries or not I look for a good defensive effort from VT. I just think we are too strong for them on both sides of the ball.

Probably true.  They got a bunch of their starters back from 2012.  But they lost some to injuries too.

We need a good scrimmage.  For certain, their D will be better than their O.

Their defensive stats weren't great last year, but mostly because their offense was inept and the D spent a lot of time on the field.

I think we cover easily as long as AJ is OK.

I picked against us with all those points. We will have a little trouble in the red zone and they will score at least one kick/punt return on us. I don't care how hard the coaches prepared these kids mentally, at 4:30 they will be in the dome, with the entire world watching, expecting them to be invincible football god's virtually incapable of losing a game. They will be scared, over-aroused, shocked when something doesn't go as expected. They will win easily but won't cover.

...and btw, by this time next week they actually will be invincible football gods incapable of losing a game.

ROOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL TIDE ROLL!!!!!!!!!!

1. Bet you an e-cred that VT won't score against us with kick/punt return.
2. We will have a little trouble in the red zone??  So, if we only score 5/6 times in the red zone, you're right?  :lol2:  I'll be specific.  We'll score on them with the power game in the red zone.  Their best players are on their D, but that doesn't mean much.
3. We cover easily.  ND was better.

Since kick/punt returns are rare generally, I'll take a 2 to 1 ecred bet.

If you are willing to bet we will score every time we make it to the red zone, I'll make it another e-cred for that.

And another for the cover?

We're chatting about it on GameDay et al. thread.
I'll bet if Saban suspended 6 defenders for the VT game, we'd have an easier time than A&M is having.  Bet?  :lol2:

This is the first time that Alabama has scored two special teams touchdowns in a game since September 6, 2008 against Tulane.

He got 78 on one play. Other that the one long TD run the defense played great. The field goal was set up by the INT and short field. I feel good about that side of the ball. The offense needs work.

I said before the game I expected VT to give a good defensive effort. I did not expect it to be that good. I am not sure how much was VT playing good or us playing bad. Whatever it was our offensive line needs work. I am glad we have the week off. I think we will see a big improvement against A&M.

Okay. So VT failed to score a special teams touchdown, we were 1 fer 1 in red zone scoring, and VT covered. I assigned an e-cred but still owe you two. SC, I did you an e-cred for our spread bet.

I boldly asserted that the game would be more lopsided than the score indicated. It was just the opposite, closer than the score indicated. If it weren't for the astronomically rare two kick/punt returns, we would have won by only 11 pts. Our offense was so bad we didn't even get in the red zone but once. Our D, and our special teams D, was great, so I was just dead wrong on the prediction that they'd score on special teams.
