Title: After another shutout, Crimson Tide is tied for SEC West lead
Post by: pmull on May 09, 2011, 08:30:30 AM
TUSCALOOSA - After one small step back, the up-and-down Alabama baseball team took two big steps forward this weekend and regained a share of first place in the Southeastern Conference Western Division.

One day after closing a 4-0 victory over LSU, senior left-hander Jonathan Smart started Sunday and nearly finished a 9-0 victory over the Tigers that tied the Crimson Tide (30-20, 12-12 SEC) with Arkansas for first place.

The consecutive shutouts were Alabama's first since 2004 (Southeast Missouri State) and its first in the SEC since 1990 (Ole Miss). LSU (30-19, 8-16) had not been the victim of consecutive shutouts since 1982 (Ole Miss).

Alabama coach Mitch Gaspard called it "just a complete effort, probably our best game all year. ... One that we needed. This was a really big game."
