"Amid Madness, Alabama Sticks to Its Method"

Quote
COLLEGE STATION, Tex. — Johnny Manziel turned and scrambled backward, then turned again and scrambled farther backward, then eluded a defender and spun around and heaved a pass off his back foot toward, well, toward somewhere. The play was ridiculous, the toss reckless, so naturally, it went for a first down.

The play seemed to foretell another season of Manziel mania for college football and Texas A&M. It was chaotic and bumpy and fortuitous and sublime. It seemed to say that No. 1 Alabama could be beaten, would be beaten, as long as Manziel could summon his magic on Saturday to knock off the defending national champion again.

Except Alabama answered. It always answered. With Manziel throwing for a university-record 464 yards, No. 6 Texas A&M scored more points than any other Alabama opponent in the Nick Saban era and still lost. And that was how the most hyped game of the early college football season unfolded at Kyle Field: Manziel dazzled often and self-destructed occasionally, and the methodical machine known as Alabama Football topped the phenomenon known as Johnny Football in its 49-42 win.
