Sobering article on the dangers of football (http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1776791-high-school-football-player-dies-after-helmet-to-helmet-collision?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial&hpt=hp_t2)

That is a sad stat and I wish there would be no more deaths but it is a violent sport. however, it is much safer than letting a teenager drive a car.

I had girls so I did not have to make that decision. If I had boys I would have encouraged them to play football.

I played football for 4 years, quit after the season I had two concussions in one game, in the days when no one paid much attention to that.  I also had a friend go to the hospital on a stretcher from the game that year.  I think it was a great experience, playing on a team, but I wouldn't encourage a son to do it.

The UCLA kid was hit by a car and killed while just walking down the road.

I'm trying to figure out if this happens more often now than it did when I was playing 25 years ago.  My guess is that it is probably less often now, we just never heard about it then.  If a kid in New Jersey was killed playing football back then, we probably would not even have known about it without the internet and 24 hour news channels.

Over the same time period used in this article hundreds of children have been killed in school bus accidents.

Another thought. What do you think your 16-18 year old son is going to be doing on a Friday night if he is not playing football? Now that is a scray thought.

Just last night we had a middle school kid (RB) lower his head and run into the largest defender.  He wasn't moving and taken to the hospital on a stretcher.  Fortunately, diagnosis is a neck strain -- it could have been far worse.

This is the fundamental problem with almost all of these severe injuries and fatalities.  I know our coaches preached every day not to do that or you will break your neck.  They got on us pretty hard too if we slipped up.  Are we not doing as good of a job teaching kids proper technique these days?

Hmmm... I wonder if they lower their heads like that in the Madden/NCAA Football games.

I agree as well. Maybe they shouldn't let teens get a drivers license until they graduate from high school. That would never happen in this day and time but it sure would save some kids lives. It wouldn't make mom and dad happy either, they would actually have to act like a mom and dad and transport their kids to their destinations.

I was thinking they would be doing the same things they now do on Saturday nights...just getting to do it two weekend nights instead of one...
