Good for the Braves! Falcons should have done the same thing.

It story broke around 9 in the morning yesterday. It was pretty tight lipped.

I think it'll be good for them. I'm not sure the traffic will be any better because it's like a parking lot right there where 75 and 285 meet now.

The Falcons are getting a brand new stadium with retractable roof, courtesy of the taxpayers. Why would they leave? Plus, I find it hilarious that the city plans to demolish Turner Field and use the property to build middle class homes. Right, I guess the mayor has never been to the stadium and seen the surrounding "neighbors." Kinda like demolishing Legion Field to do the same thing, no one would buy a house there.

It seems like only yesterday, the Ted was built. Seems like a big waste to me. If they are building a new stadium at I-75 & I-285, BDC is correct, that area is already a parking lot most of the time. It's going to make matters worse.

They ought to move it to Gwinnett County, if they're going to do anything. That's where everybody has been moving to over the last 15 years. But then, what do you do with the Gwinnett Braves.  :dunno:

Turner Field was built in 1996 for the Atlanta Olympics. The braves have a 20 year lease and will move when the lease ends. That seems like a short shelf life for a nice facility to me. Atlanta Fulton County Stadium was built in 1966 and only lasted 30 years.

There are pros and cons to being in the city or the suburbs. The Braves are saying the majority of their fans are located in Cobb County. Atlanta traffic is a bit** any where you go.

The new stadium is at the same exit as for Six Flags. Easy to get to. So should be a plus!

Middle class homes would be a big improvement for that area.

I'm sure you could buy a couple of the homes as an investment.

That will be a big plus. Turn that whole area into one big entertainment complex, with shopping, restaurants, the new stadium, and Six Flags. It is similar to what the Nationals have (and are trying to do still) at their stadium.

From what I've read that's what they want to do.  Make it a place where you can come and spend the whole day, or just pop in for dinner and ballgame after work.  The first time I went to Turner Field I was shocked at how little there was to do around the stadium itself: one or two restaurants/bars and not much else. 

My recommendation though is instead of a retractable roof have about 10,000 retractable seats.  That way when the playoffs come around and the people of Atlanta can't be bothered to get out and support the team the stadium will at least look full. 

What now?  The I-75/I-285 intersection is 15 miles from Six Flags.  Six Flags is south off I-20.

 

The new stadium will be located just outside perimeter loop I-285 on I-75 North. I-75 North goes to Chattanooga. Like HL said Six Flags is on I-20.
