Title: Former LSU basketball great, longtime television analyst Joe Dean Sr. dies
Post by: pmull on November 18, 2013, 11:31:30 AM
String music...  :(

Quote
Joe Dean, a former LSU basketball star and later the university's athletic director, died Sunday at age 83.

Quote
From 1969 to 1987, Dean was an analyst on SEC basketball broadcasts. He became known for saying, "string music," to describe the sound of a basketball swishing through the net.

"The years I spent with Joe were magical," said Tom Hammond, Dean's longtime play-by-play partner. "Broadcasting the games was special, but traveling the back roads of the South together created lasting memories. Joe would share stories from his colorful past in the way that only he could."

This will hit a lot of folks like myself who grew up watching SEC basketball as a teenager and listening to Joe Dean's colorful & enthusiastic description of the game. Finebaum is another who has talked about this on his show over the years. His son sounds EXACTLY like him and it is quite spooky.

I can still hear him and that distinctive voice saying that after a beautiful shot.

I think as MD said this will break some hearts for sure. I always enjoyed him calling a game especially when Pete Maravich was playing. Joe will always be the best in the order of announcing right beside Keith Jackson to me. God Bless the family through time of mourning. RTR!

Wow, I grew up watching Joe on Saturdays calling games. I always hated it when he got out of the bidness. RIP Joe.  :(
