BREAKING: Jim Tressel Has Resigned

COLUMBUS -- Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel has resigned.

We have contacted OSU officials and they say they are in a meeting and will release more information within the hour.

We
have confirmed that Interim head football coach Luke Fickel will coach
the entire 2011 season.  The search for a new coach won`t begin until
after the season.

This part of the article is what bothers me:

Tressel also received support at the spring meetings from fellow coaches such as Michigan State's Mark Dantonio and Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald, as well as from Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne, a longtime friend.

I mean, what the H*LL? The guy admits to lying and they support that?  :o

I just don't see how the university president and AD Smith keep their jobs. The have made fools of themselves and made the univesity to look spineless and totally under the thumb of Tressel. Notice, it was the Board of Trustees who had to pull the trigger because the prez & AD were so gutless.

I agree MD. The President and AD will be next.

OSU has realized that they are getting ready to get hammered by the NCAA. This is damage control.

Oops.

Should have happened immediately, lack of institutional control.

Yeah, now that he's gone, suddenly the prez and AD will start talking about how important integrity in sports is and how Ohio St. wanted to set the tone for demonstratig their "integrity." They will talk like everything is okay now and act like they were always in control.

It will be very interesting to see if this will be a domino effect from the school. If the NCAA moves on the lack of institutional control as their major infraction, the BOT may go ahead and replace the President and AD.

Tressel's last act as HC was to fire them. He had more power than they did anyway.

LOL!! I think you're right. He will be a major influence in them being fired.    ;)

Herbstreit says on ESPN that he doesn't think Tressel will ever want to coach again.

Herbstreit says on ESPN that he doesn't think Tressel will ever want to coach again.
He (Herbie) said he was within 4 or 5 years of retiring anyway. But this is the first time I've seen KH take up for Tressel. He used the "trying to protect his players" excuse. This is nonsense, because it means he instead took a chance (and lost) of throwing the rest of his team, the program, and the university under the bus.

Yeah, I know KH has been critical of Tressel in the past. He must be feeling a little sentimental today.

Did I just hear them say on Sports Center that Tressel will forgo all future salary? Anyone else hear this?

Tressel should have sat all the players after he received the email and let the OSU compliance officers handle the problems. Pryor would have been suspended for 5 games last year just like AJ Green. When that WR Small gave out that story last week and his attitude was he didn't care if he broke any rules or not was the last straw.

SI is releasing a cover story for this week about OSU. If there are recruiting violations, OSU could get hammered like USC was last year. USC's appeal was denied last week.
There are more players than 5 and maybe other coaches as well. Probably more NCAA violations than just selling rings.

Auto loans and other graf is now surfacing.

Question? Who sent Tressel first email last April 2010? 8)

Quite a coincidence that SI gave Ohio State details of the article and like the next day Tressel "resigns." Sounds like they have some real dynamite on OSU.

Thanks MD

SI article named former player. When Tressel did not followup with email and discipline players, Cicero released email to investigators.

"Tressel had learned that Pryor and wide receiver DeVier Posey were involved in the memorabilia deals when he received an email from lawyer Christopher Cicero, a former Ohio State walk-on and letterman in the 1980s, back in April 2010".

At first it made my day, and then I felt kinda sad. Tressel and OSU deserve each other, really they do!

The razorbacks blocked that punt and all they had to do was grab it and walk into the endzone. That would have been a suitable ending to Tressel era. OSU 0-10 vs SEC!

Jim Tressel was the author of two books on faith and integrity. What a hypocrite! He's going to burn.
