Title: Another Major Sports Team Has Lost Its Mind
Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 06, 2013, 03:51:48 PM
What is wrong with all these team owners in the major sports. Seattle is not exactly a hot bed of baseball.

After a whirlwind day of activity, Robinson Cano is officially a Mariner.

Typical sports franchise, more money than sense.

For some background on Cano the player. He is 31 years old and plays 2nd base & ss. He has won 2 Gold Gloves at 2B. He is the best hitting 2B in baseball. He is a career .309 hitter & has hit over 200 homers in 9 years & 375 doubles. Good RBI man, too, but he is still 31 years old. He was trying to scrape by on $15 mil a year with the Yankees.

Huge risk by the Mariners.  Baseball contracts are guaranteed.  If Cano decides to give nothing more than bare minimum for the next ten years the Mariners will still have to pay him.  If he suffers a serious injury or a series of nagging injuries that hinder his performance the Mariners will still have to pay him.  Due to the length and high salary they'll likely have trouble trading him if things aren't working out.

Seattle will come to regret this deal and I think the Yankees were smart.  Today/last night, they've reached agreement with Carlos Beltran for a 3-year deal  Much less risk.

But some teams which have had loosing records for years, have to do something to entice their fans to buy tickets.  Maybe the Mariners think they can increase tkt sales enough to offset some of the cost of the Cano deal.

I always find this time of year very interesting for baseball news.  More to come.

Beltran is 36 & while he can still be a fearsome hitter, he's nothing like 5 years ago. The Yankees offered Cano $175 mil for 7 years, but Cano wanted a 10 year deal. The Yankees were smart to walk away. The Yankees can afford a bad deal, the Mariners can not.

I'm going to bet that Seattle will go after at least one more premier player. They haven't been relevant since Griffey and A-Rod were on the team.

Boston got a deal signing Dustin Pedroia to an 8 year $110M contract.

Yep. I think that actually works out good for the BoSox. If Pedroia was to go down or his stats took a hit, Boston would not be out nearly as much money as Seattle would in the same situation.

Personally I think Seattle is crazy throwing that many years at Cano. It is not the money that bothers me (although it is unreal) but the number of years. Considering that Seattle is not a playoff team right now, they are really betting the bank that they can make a run in the next 4-5 years. If not, they are stuck with a really horrible contract for many years.

Ten years is a long time for a 31 year old ball player. Pedroia is a year younger at 30 and eight years seems like a long time. Cano is a good player but I wonder if he can bring the leadership to Seattle that Pedroia does to Boston.

It seems like all these blockbuster deals follow the same pattern. The player gets injured or has nagging injuries 2 or 3 years in a row or the team still loses big time except the player still draws his huge check and after 2 or 3 years they unload him but still have to pay a major chunk of his salary to get rid of him.
