Title: Hurt: Saban takes reflective turn at SEC Meetings
Post by: pmull on June 01, 2011, 09:55:59 AM
Perhaps it was the nearby beach, with the soft sands and gentle waves. Perhaps it was a general fatigue with nuts-and-bolts issues like roster management or quarterback competition.

Whatever the reason, Nick Saban's annual media turn at the SEC Meetings in the Sandestin Resort took a decidedly reflective turn Tuesday. He talked at length about his friend, former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressell. He spoke about having to help friends - and family - in the wake of the April 27 tornado in Tuscaloosa. By the end, he proclaimed it wryly as his "best press conference" ever because he was not asked "about Alabama football."

That was only partially true. He didn't get many questions on the topic du jour - "oversigning," or roster management - in large part because his position on the issue is so well-known. Saban issued what was essentialy his manifesto last February in his post-Signing Day press conference, defending Alabama's signing practices. He has said coming into this meeting that he sees no need for proposed reductions that would whittle the current SEC cap on signings (28) down to 25.

We should at least have a signing cap of as many as the biggest cap of any conference. If we don't that sets us back light years from other teams. RTR!
