Title: Mack Brown Soap Opera in High Gear
Post by: Marshal Dillon on December 10, 2013, 10:25:51 AM
This story seals it for me that they HAVE to let Brown go.

Quote
Brown, the third-longest tenured coach in FBS, has a buyout of only $2.75 million if he is let go before Dec. 31, 2014. He agreed to the buyout when his contract was extended through the 2020 season last January.

Quote
While $2.75 million might not seem like a small severance, it's paltry considering the fact Brown is owed about $40 million after this season. That means the payoff would represent less than 7 percent of the total value of his contract.

But wait, there is more to the story. They are laying the groundwork for a change. Remember, they have already dropped the AD, another friend of Mack.

AND ONE MORE THING!!

Quote
Give Mack Brown credit. Without his starting quarterback and with a handful of key injuries throughout the year, he had Texas within 30 minutes of a BCS bowl. It wasn’t always easy on the eyes, but the season never truly got away.

Quote
With that worthy disclaimer on the table, Texas will likely look long and hard at making a change at head coach. If it does decide to go this route—and a change seems both likely and appropriate—it may not have to search far and wide to find the ideal replacement.

No, not Nick Saban. Let’s stop this, please. Jon Gruden? Again, let's not. But landing current conference foe Mike Gundy is possible, and he should be the name at the top of the (realistic) wish list.

Mike Gundy?  He's not realistic either.  He played football at Oklahoma State, and they've got money to match Texas.  Plus, he's a man, he's (at least) 40.

With T. Boone Pickens I'd think that OSU would have more money than Texas...

Mike Gundy flirted with Tenn and Arky last year before deciding to stay at Okie State. Oklahoma State grad or not the Texas job is a huge step up to one of the elite college programs. He would have to at least think about it.

Rumor has it that there is friction between Gundy and T. Boone and Gundy is looking to leave. And speaking of T. Boone, some bad investments have taken a toll, he no longer is on the Forbes 400 list of richest people. ($1B or more)

Well $$$ talks so this is something they will have to consider.  How can the Trustees defend walking into such a large obligation?

But before UTx dumps MB they need to have a pretty good idea of who they'll be hiring.

Where would you put the odds that MB just outright retires?  I wouldn't completely dismiss that possibility.

I think sometimes this coaching search gets so funny. We have a great coach who has spoiled us and we know it. We expect more and more wins and NC rings. I just wonder if CNS would retired if he had won the 3 peat? He would have something no other did before him. This might be a good omen for us. Time will tell. Let's now set our sights on oklahoma and whipping them worse than Mich. ST. by 20 points. RTR!

The "rumor" has hit the evening news out here and they state the site reporting it is rarely wrong.  Names they say you will hear most are Nick Saban and Art Briles.

Brown, who was recruiting on Tuesday, refuted a report by Orangebloods.com that cited high-level sources stating he would step down after 16 years as the Longhorns' coach.

Someone is really jerking these journalists around with all this "inside" info. Nick Saban is not leaving, period. After seeing him talk about staying on 60 Minutes and his wife insisting they would stay at Alabama.

Mrs. J makes all the decisions around here and she says she is very happy living in Tuscalosa and sees no reason for us to leave here. We are too late in our careers to move to Texas where we feel it will take too many years to turn that program around. So to give a quick answer to all of the nonsense of us leaving Tuscaloosa, go to bed tonight and sleep well tonight because we will be here in Tuscaloosa for the rest of our careers. ;)

People were speculating about Nick Saban going to Texas long before news came out that Mack Brown is expected to resign as head football coach.
So it should be no surprise that a bunch of Saban-to-Texas rumors have burst into life in the last few hours.

It's important to note that Brown hasn't even officially resigned yet, and no one knows anything about whether Saban is actually interested in leaving Alabama.

Take most of these with a hefty dose of salt, and some of them not at all.
