Title: Good year for UA athletics
Post by: cbbama99 on June 03, 2011, 04:17:15 PM
I would have to say that this has been a pretty successful year for Bama teams. Football goes 10-3 and lays a beat down on the Big 10 co-champs in bowl game, men's bball makes NIT title game, women's bball gets to WNIT, gymnastics wins NC, softball team has chance to win NC, baseball team makes regionals with chance to do more, golf teams doing well. Did I miss anything? Big Roll Tide to all of our sports programs!

Roll Tide!

I think we should count this upcoming season's football results.   8)

True. For some reason, I still seem to think of the year as September to August (I guess I just never got over that from my school days). Most people probably think January to December; Bama fans know the year is September through August  ;)

Whenever it starts, we have winning teams every year especially in gymnastics. RTR!

I was talking with a friend of mine, past Bama player of many years, at a REC meeting last night and we were discussing this very subject of how much the atheletic programs have improved.

He asked me if I knew who the AD was that started the movement toward improving the atheletic programs as a whole, and I didn't know.

Bob Bockrath... Yes I was shocked and yes I didn't care for the gentleman.

I think memories are a little fuzzy.
Who brought in C.M. Newton to upgrade the BB program in 1969? Coach Paul Bryant
Who hired Sarah Patterson as the gymnastics coach? Coach Paul Bryant
The baseball team played for the College World Series title in 1983. (Coach hired by guess who?)
Bob Bockrath hired Mike DumBose.

I'm not referencing to just basketball, baseball, and football, I'm referencing to the whole program, Title IX issues. Sarah Patterson was leaving Bama to go to Nebraska unless she got some upgrades in her program.

What about the Bass Fishing Team?

Hey now don't knock those guys, they're pretty good. These guys have had a team for a few years, not sure when they started. How about the ice hockey team, they beat the heck out of Auburn. I don't have a clue when that started. Don't forget the rowing team either and they are pretty good also.

Man, who would have thunk all of this would be happening at the U of A.

We need to have some rowing in game threads.  I would say bass fishing too but we might scare off the fish.

Every year when the Iron Bowl is played in football, the fishermen have their Iron Bowl the same weekend. The fishermen did a little better than the football team this year, they beat Auburn

They made the NCAA Tournament and did indeed drop the ball as to making the final cut of teams that would move on to the Match Play part of the tournament which is how the National Championship is decided.

They not only made the NCAA Regionals they advanced to the first stage of the finals with 25 other teams. They blew up (pun intented since the high wind was an issue) on the last day and did not advance to match play. Only 8 teams made it to match play. They went to the NCAA tournament ranked # 3. All-in-all not a bad year.

Dropped the ball was a far superior pun, and it's also a cliche.  #winning
