Title: Welfare drug testing

http://articles.cnn.com/2011-06-01/politics/florida.welfare.drug.testing_1_drug-testing-drug-screening-tanf?_s=PM:POLITICS

I have to comment here.

I hate welfare.  I would be a fan of eliminating it entirely.  I would certainly love to see it limited and force them to get jobs.  However, you cant force drug tests for a government assistance program.

The constitution guarantees the right to not be subject to unreasonable search and seizure.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourth_Amendment_to_the_United_States_Constitution

Being unemployed is not probable cause.  We already allow private companies to require drug testing in or to employ people.  Which means you have to give up a constitutional right in order to be employed in many cases.

So how far will employers be allowed to dig into ones private life and so goes the government?

So why am I so against drug tests?  In addition to the slippery slope of assuming guilt and treating average citizens like felons, but also because they do not do anything.  Most drugs which are highly addictive do not stay in peoples system more than a day.  So basically you're just getting a bunch of harmless pot heads.   And you're only catching the dumb ones.  Drug tests are easy cheat on and pass.  It's all a huge waste of money and false sense of accomplishing something.

Drug tests are good for basically one thing, supervised, unannounced random testing of people convicted of a crime and ordered by a judge to under go periodic testing.  They are also good for treatment programs to keep people honest but should always be voluntary.

So here is my prediction.

Someone sues, it goes to the supreme court and gets struck down.  The state of Florida has to pay hundreds of millions of retroactive welfare, which results in block party's all over the state.

Well now general, I did not know we was protected by the constitution for drug tests. I do however agree that people on welfare should scrutinized someway. This is one way you stop some women from having kids only to draw more checks and benefits. RTR!

Most private companies drug screen new employees because workers comp is less expensive if you do. I talking primarily construction and manufacturering jobs.

Oh Lord, when I worked construction for 33 years, back in the 70's and early 80's people use to smoke mary jane on the job all the time. Ironworkers would be up on the steel smoking and nobody could smell it. Middle part of 80's they was talking about testing, by the first part of the 90's they was drug testing everybody. The really bad consturction boys would use other peoples urine to get by tests it was funny how many ways they would try to beat tests.
I hate to say this but when the drug testing world came to construction the quality of work actually got worse.
The people who was really good started going to small companies cause they didn't test all the people it cost them to much. I was there when the world of testing started it was a wild ride. RTR!

I am subject to drug test to get my government issued check...maybe so should they. It was my choice to take this job, ani't nobody forcing them to take the W.F. check.

Not sure being employed should be considered a choice.  Just a loop hole to violate your constitution rights.  I get tested too, that's not my point.

If we're going to start taking over peoples lives why dont we just go ahead and sterilize them?  Maybe make them wake up earlier in the day?  Keep a good haircut?  Get some exercise?

That might not be a bad idea with some of these preachers who keep predicting when the world is going to end.
