Title: Have you been in a natural disaster?
Post by: Old Tider on June 10, 2011, 05:32:13 PM
I figure some of you were caught up in the Tuscaloosa tornado or other ones. I never have but did live in Mobile when Hurricane Frederic hit in 1979. Broke all of our pines off halfway up the trunks and blew out a window. The roar increased the fear. But tornadoes can cause worse. I think only one person was killed during Frederic, down near Gulf Shores.

Fredrick was bad. The difference in a tornado and hurricane is you know the hurricane is coming. A tornado you seek shelter and hope it misses you.

On a side note Frederick was great for Gulf Shores. They built everything back bigger and better than before. Gulf Shores was very small then compared to today.

Been in a couple, but Ivan was by far the worst.

I was working for the newspaper up in Jasper when the tornadoes of 2002 came through, ripping Carbon Hill to shreds. All the reporters went up there that night to see what we could come up with, and it was really eerie walking around in pitch blackness with rain still coming down and trying to avoid downed trees and powerlines, while also avoiding other wreckage.

Yep. The Blizzard of 1993, we had 18 inches of snow in Oxford, Al. Many folks lost power and water but all we lost was cable.

1985- Hurricane Kate hit Tallahassee, Fl and downed MANY trees and knocked out power for 95% of the city. Scary situation. No power for 6 days. Love those cold showers in November!

I almost forgot about the 1993 ice storm when I was with the Lauderdale County, Tn Sheriff dept. I've never seen anything like that in my life. It crippled the entire Mid-South. I was the only one that could make it in and I dispatched every emergency vehicle in that county for 8 hours. I was exhausted. There were pacles without power for a month and a half.

1993 blizzard living in Birmingham. Over 200,000 without power. It was a storm of storms.
1997-Rainsville Al. F1 Tornado dropped right out of the sky roughly 100 yards from where I was pumping gas in my car. I had my family in the car at the time. I just shut off the pump, jumped in the car and drove north for a couple miles. Rainsville had some damage and minor injuries, but it pales in comparison to what they just got a few weeks back. I did go back and pay for the gas though, lol

I saw my first tornado when I was 10 years old on April 4, 1974.  That was actually kinda cool until I saw the damage that it had done.  We didn't suffer any damage at all personally, thankfully...

Blizzard of 1993 in Anniston. Me and my jeep created roads. The April Tornadoes in Chattanooga. I hope I don't see another disaster.

I was in the Philippines during Typhoon Irene. Lots of hard wind and flooding. Our car floated down the road. Without power for days.

1st one I can really remember clearly was Camille in 1969
I was in school in Mississippi and got a good look at it up close a personal like
found  my first dead body on that one ... the hurricane parties seemed really stupid afterwards .

several small storms , along with  Dennis, Fredric, Ivan , then Katrina
I never dreamed I would see one worse than Camile , I was wrong .
Betsy hit N.O. and leveled every house on the block but was nothing like the K girl's punch ...

winter weather is the worst to me ... spent several winters in the North West
and the 69 below wind chill is pretty tuff ... power goes out just like in a cane
but it's different , freezing to death is not my idea of a good way to go out and
when it's so cold it hurts to draw in a breath  ... then
the oil in the steering gear box freezes on you truck it will get your attention ...
lets not even mention the white outs ...

I'll take my Gulf Coast weather any day over the cold snow wind and ice ...
those tornadoes put the fear in me too ... none of the bad weather is any fun though .

I was in T-Town aound '76 when the roof was blown off the Ramada. It really does sound like a freight train.

Caught offshore (drill rig) during Hurricane Danny (1985).

I also remember the snowstorm of 1993 (my senior year in high school). There was also an ice storm in Tuscaloosa I believe in 1996(?). I was at UA and working at a car wash for some extra cash, and the owner called me and another guy in to open this station with about 1.5 to 2 inches of ice on the roads. I had to drive from Northport over on Hwy 43 over to just past Watermelon Road. That was a dicey drive.
