Title: Major, Major, Major Changes Coming to NCAA & SEC Post by: Marshal Dillon on May 24, 2014, 01:19:47 PM I have not seen this posted even though it's a couple of days old. Fascinating article with incredible implications for college sports. In a nutshell, the NCAA as a governing body could be toast. Read the entire article. Fascinating.
Quote Autonomy has become a hot topic among commissioners of the five biggest football conferences. SEC commissioner Mike Slive, Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott and Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany all said Wednesday during interviews with The Associated Press that they want to ensure the biggest football conferences can decide how their own legislative process works in many areas affecting their athletes. The NCAA board of directors is expected to vote on a restructuring in early August. The current proposal would require a two-thirds vote by the 65 schools at those power leagues to pass legislation. Slive said that threshold and the interpretation of that legislation are concerns for the SEC, but didn't discuss specific changes. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10965113/commissioner-mike-slive-expects-autonomy-hot-topic-sec-meetings :casablanca: Title: Re: Major, Major, Major Changes Coming to NCAA & SEC Post by: ricky023 on May 24, 2014, 02:45:25 PM I see a grand article but some of the things I do not understand.
(1) Separation time from sports? (2) They're seeking decision-making powers in funding the full cost of scholarships, handling health care and other areas involving their athletes. (3) Other changes under consideration include providing money for families to travel to NCAA tournaments I wonder if this will include football also? Thanks MD for this one. RTR! Football and probably basketball are the driving force behind these changes, plus the thuggishness of the NCAA. Suddenly, the NCAA is in a big hurry to pass some of their own "reforms" because they know they are out of business without the 5 major conferences. Title: Re: Major, Major, Major Changes Coming to NCAA & SEC Post by: bamaphil on May 24, 2014, 06:19:06 PM It was only a matter of time. Too much money involved for the big boys of college athletics to let the NCAA interfere.
Title: Re: Major, Major, Major Changes Coming to NCAA & SEC Post by: pmull on May 24, 2014, 07:32:50 PM This should have happened years ago. Troy, Jax State and UAB should not be competing at the same level as Alabama and the barn. Small schools are great. I graduated from one.
There should be a proper division of the university's and colleges and not let them just chase the big bucks. Troy, North Alabama, Samford, UAB and South Alabama do not need to compete with the big league nor should they share in the money. They need to compete at at their own level where conference and national championships are a realistic dream. Whenever the SEC & Big 8/12 brought this up the Big Ten and PAC 8 sanctimoniously shot it down. So while they looked their noses down at the SEC & Big 8 and pointed out all their probations, something funny happened. Starting around 10-12 years ago the following teams were placed on probation: USC Michigan BB & Football Minnesota Indiana BB Ohio State Wisconsin Oregon Cal Washington Arizona State In other words, everyone is sick & tired of the NCAA. Here is a great article on the NCAA and its record of probation since around 2002. http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2011/02/07/ncaa_punishes_almost_half_of_members_of_football_bowl_subdivision_for_major_rules_violations#sthash.eLw8cY6X.dpbs :ty: Title: Re: Major, Major, Major Changes Coming to NCAA & SEC Post by: XBAMA on May 25, 2014, 07:16:57 AM I've always wanted to bring the NCAA up on charges :lol2:
