Title: Team & recruiting notes

Thanks to Snout Spout for posting over at WA.

QB’s- Coker continues to impress. The feeling on the coaching staff is that he could be as good as AJ in 2014, with an upside to be slightly better in the future. Sims has continued to improve and compete. Have not heard enough on Bateman or Cornwell to offer anything new on either.

Lots of good news on several players. Some negatives however.......

walk on punter Tuck Borie from Hoover HS has already left the team. He was expected to be a factor in the starting punting job for 2014.

Look for some names to vanish from the 2015 commit list. Some possible candidates are Ledbetter, Burgess-Becker, Moton (above) and Warmack.

I don't understand why Warmack's name would be on that list.

Flipping seems to be a big thing in these days. Warmack probably has a lot of people hoping he will flip somewhere else. When we start fall practice, we will see who is Alabama at heart. RTR!

I think there will be some unhappy endings for those that choose to play the flipping game

This flipping thing is a natural by-product of our success, combined with the culture of narcissism and self-promotion that is dominating the sports landscape. To wit, there is only one thing swaggier than being offered by the best team in the country, and that's publicly turning down the best team in the country. Back in the day this used to be called just plain stupid. But you get to say you are a bama caliber player, then go to another school where you can play right away. Maybe you have the fantasy that you can single handedly make that team a winner, even thigh football is a 22+ man game. Maybe that team blew sunshine up into your swollen ego and promised you the moon and stars. In your self-inflated mind, you capture national headlines, get drafted high in the first round as a junior, and make gatorade commercials.

We've done pretty good in getting some top notch early commits.  Better than I expected, i.e. at some point guys value a clear path to early playing time over all else.  But I always take verbal commits with several grains of salt.  Guys flip.  That's just the way it is.  I don't want to be arrogant 'cause we always want good, talented players, but if they aren't full Bama in their hearts and minds then better they go elsewhere.  Being an Alabama football player has great rewards but it takes lots of hard work.  Some guys get scared off by the hard work part.

I'm hearing Warmack is being recruited hard by the barn.

I'm hearing Warmack is being recruited hard by the barn.

Warmack made a visit to the barn recently. I do not know if he will flip or not. These kids are hard to read. He could stay with Bama due to family ties with his brother and he knows the school and staff well. He could go elsewhere to be with HS friends and players he is meeting on the recruiting trail. He could be concerned about playing time or would like to play immediately. Who knows what is going on inside these kids heads.

I hear Georgia is also after him. It is a long time until signing day and nothing is a sure thing until they sign the papers.

The flipping game works both ways.  Every year we lose a few of our early commitments and pick up a few flips from other schools.  If memory serves me right we usually end up with better players than the ones we lose.

True, and I'm not particularly concerned with the kids that flip, but it kind of surprised me that Warmack was mentioned as a possible decommit, since his brother played here. Maybe he doesn't want to live in his shadow.  :dunno:

Flipping may be a common thing but it sure doesn't say much for the character of the player. I was taught at an early age to always be a man of your word and people would always trust you under any circumstance. ;)
