Title: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 27, 2011, 10:08:19 AM I am challenging myself to: run 100 miles and drop 30 lbs (100 miles +30 days =130) in 30 days.
Rools are: I start today and go through the morning of July 28th. Weigh in's daily. Any miles put in on the bike will be reduced by 75% and then added in as run miles. ( example: 20 miles on the bike would = 4 miles running.). Rain Days = tread mill ( ipronounce it dread mill). Today's run 3.3 miles Today's weight = 231.0 lbs. I am posting this, not to brag or " hey loo kit me" but fir accountability. I have considered adding: drop 10.6% body fat. That would make the total 140.6, which is the total mileage of an Ironman triathlon. But I dunno...I will decide by the end of the day. Any help, motivation...( positive or negative) or anything else would be much appreciated. I can hear the determination in your voice. Take one 3 mile step a day till you build bigger. I use to have a program and it is hard but you know you can do it Because you are Reuben, go man go! RTR!

I have to use a calendar to time myself. 2, I have dropped form 265, down to 230. I just really plateaued at 230. I got down to 225-226, but I packed it right back on when I made the lil' fishing trip to Messico Beach / Pt St. Joe. I figure the only way to bust through the plateau is to do a challenge like this. Thanks Ricky!!! Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: ricky023 on June 27, 2011, 10:48:29 AM Yea if you have hit a stall spot you need to hump a bit more for a while and you will break through and then get a little of a back-off for a couple of days then explode of course you know the deal. Good running my friend. RTR!

Thanks Ricky!!! Well, that tells you right there that you can do it. You've done it before. By the way, Mexico Beach is awesome. Stay away, though, for your challenge. Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: cbbama99 on June 27, 2011, 06:36:18 PM I tell you brother, you've got humongous steel cajones to attempt something like that. I'm not sure that I have run 100 miles in my 36 years of life. I hope it works out, and I will be pulling for you to succeed. I'm not quite as ambitious as you, but I am attempting to lose about 40 pounds myself.
Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 28, 2011, 07:17:33 AM The first 30-35 came off very slowly. So slowly that most people who saw me on a regular basis never really noticed. People who I saw sporadically over the moths were the ones who noticed.
I may have to postpone the challenge for a couple of days, I woke up around 3:00am with some stomach cramps. ( No, WV I am not getting my period! :-\) I have considered going to a local "diet doctor." The people who have gone, and followed his plan, have done really well. I just feel like I would be admitting defeat if I go to him. I already have people ask me what I am taking. My response so far has been, " I am taking my ass to the running trail and dragging it around the 3.3 mile loop!" Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: ricky023 on June 28, 2011, 09:04:53 AM Keep it up Reuben. You can do it. Your body is changing and when it gets use to you running you will be a wild man. I can see the strength in your typing come on buddy, Hammer Down! RTR!

Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 28, 2011, 10:39:50 AM Rueben, I'm curious, how long does it take you to run 3.3 miles? Let's just say I use a calendar to time myself, instead of a stopwatch. :-[ J/K It depends on several things, on a flat road prolly just under 30 minutes. On the trail it's usually around 34, hilly asphalt somewhere in between. I am slower now than I was in the spring when we had such low humidity. A lot of people who run start to think their training is going backwards, and try to over dissect their training, diet, etc to see where the problem is. All they need to do is look at the weather, the heat and humidity will zap you quick. Training in this stuff will make someone much faster when the fall rolls around. Taking in safety and not over pushing it. At this point and time in life I am really going to start pushing for distance over speed. The ol' slow twitch muscles have taken over, discipline is the order of the day. Ultra marathons may be my eventual goal, as it is a totally different type of running. Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: pmull on June 28, 2011, 11:17:36 AM I was just wondering. I have always tried to stay in shape but the older I get the harder it is. I run 2 miles on a treadmill at the gym at least 3 times a week. It is much easier than outside for all the reasons you mentioned. I run 10 minute miles which is not fast but it seems to give me a good workout.
Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 28, 2011, 12:20:01 PM 10 minute miles are fine. Matter of fact the "experts" recommend 20 minutes of cardio, so if you are doing 10 minute miles for 2 miles...tadaaaa!!!!! #+

I get on the treadmill and do a quick warm up about 1/10th mile and then run 2 miles and cool down. It takes about 25 minutes on the treadmill. Then I do some light upper body weight work to try and tone up. I'm only in the gym about 45 minutes. Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 28, 2011, 12:53:09 PM 45 minutes is plenty of time, and you are way ahead of 98% of the rest of the country!

One last question and I will let you get back to saving peoples lives. What brand of running shoes do you use? I just bought a pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 12 ($50 off too) and they are the most comfortable shoe I have ever wore. Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 28, 2011, 01:11:21 PM I kinda float around, but I always wind up back with Brooks (Adrenaline GSR's). I did get some of the new Reebok minimalist shoes, I like them for speed work, and when racing in a 5 K's. I really enjoyed the last Pearl Izmui I bought too. Bets thing I ever did was go to a running specialty store and have a gait analysis done.
BTW I am off duty today. Just kinda hanging around the house, between watching the boy and still having some stomach cramp issues, I'm not doing much else, so you certainly aren't bothering me. Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 29, 2011, 01:03:16 PM Still having lower abd cramps. Not as bad as before. Pretty sure I know what brought this on...

I know you can man, you got the stamina to save lives and you can run a great daily race to shred it all down. RTR!
Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 29, 2011, 02:34:10 PM Thanks Ricky.

The thought of running 100 miles in 30 days has been know to cause these symptoms. ;D Yeah, so has drinking a protein shake, and then laying down. No motility going on to help break down the proteins. No fat in the diet to help break down the proteins. Means protein laying up in the gut, like a giant boulder on the highway, if'n you know what I mean. Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: BAMAWV on June 29, 2011, 03:00:53 PM Sorry for thread hijacking but this reminds me of a Bama story. When I was in school (1975-79) we had a cross country guy named Wolfman. I don't think it was his real name but he came from Canada. He could run to B'Ham and back. But every time I went out on the town there was Wolfman. He drank beer all night until 1,2,3 or 4am almost every night. Then the next day you'd pass him somewhere around town, running. I never saw him around a classroom or carrying a book, but that is a separate issue. I was curious so more than once approached him with questions about his siuccess (all-SEC). He swore to the benefits of beer. I realize that alcohol will dehydrate, among other detrimental things, but Wolfman swore to it. I'd love to see him now.
Title: Re: The 30 / 130 Challenge Post by: rueben on June 29, 2011, 03:33:31 PM Not a derail at all. I'd love to know what kind of beer he drank! I don't mean that to sound smart @$$, I am serious. I think that there are some great carbohydrate benefits to beer, but not this sugar water stuff that most people drink today. The fact that he came form Canada may hep attest to this. I also think that as we age our bodies process things a lot differently, so at his age (back then) beer could have helped more than it would help me, at my age. ( Remember Hank Jr. singing "...and hangovers hurt more than they use to...") There are sevral cities that have " pub crawl races." Start at one bar, drink a beer, take off running to the next, drink a beer....some races are set where each beer is heavier, so you might start with a Miller 64, and wind up drinking a Guinness Stout before the final run. I would have l;oved to have done this...20 years ago...
