Title: HURT: Grant beefs up schedule
Post by: pmull on June 28, 2011, 02:48:57 PM
We should have a good strength of schedule this year. The out of conference looks strong. Hopefully the barn and LSU don't drag us down to far again this year.

Quote
UA has not officially released its men's basketball schedule for the 2011-12 season yet, but the names that have trickled out in various other places show that the Crimson Tide is serious about adding big-conference muscle to its non-league slate. UA will appear in a November tournament in Puerto Rico that will also include Purdue, Maryland, Temple, Colorado and, in a possible rematch of last March's NIT final, Wichita State. The Crimson Tide will host Georgetown in the SEC-Big East challenge.

If that isn't enough beef, UA will play away from home against Dayton (a very difficult stop in addition to being Grant's alma mater), Kansas State (in Kansas City) and Georgia Tech (in Phillips Arena, tentatively). Oklahoma State will come to Birmingham to face the Crimson Tide.

That's a strong non-con schedule. Hopefully those teams will live up to their expectations to make them great contests.

I hope we win some of them this year. It would be a shame to go 18-0 in conference play and going back to the NIT.

Outstanding out-of-conference schedule! It's obvious Coach Grant has been reading this forum and most certainly my posts on the matter.

That's a tough schedule but it is needed if this program is going to improve to the higher level of teams. This would be a great year to sell out all of the season tickets and pack Coleman for every game. Roll Tide!!  #+

If you want to be counted among the big boys, you gotta beat some of 'em.

Agree. Next years team will beat some good 'uns this year. We have the nucleus of an excellent team. We have an outstanding PG (Releford), SF (Mitchell), & PF (Green). Also, have some backups like Eblen and Hankerson coming back. Along with the new guys coming in, things look good.

As recently as February I was not sold on Ben Eblen. That has changed and I feel he has turned into a pretty reliable 6/7th man.

I'm not sure about Ben Eblen either. He can handle the ball but he is not a threat to score. Other than a break away lay-up I don't remember him taking a shot all of last year. I think CAG signed the kid the Ojomoh kid from Belgium to back up Releford.

You're right, he doesn't take many shots but he plays pretty good defense and doesn't do too bad running the offense. He is no Releford though.  :D

Eblen does a decent job running the point to give Releford a rest. He is not a shooter or penetrating guard. If Releford gets hurt or fouls out we will struggle with Eblen in a tight game. He is OK but not an SEC championship team caliber player.
