Title: Alabama Football: All-Time 10 Best QB抯
Post by: pmull on July 02, 2011, 04:11:52 PM
ISPORTSWEB writes this article about the Top 10 all time Bama QB's. I was expecting Gary Rudledge and Richard Todd to be on the list.

I too was shcoked Richard Todd was not on there but if you meant Gary Hollingsworth, I didn't think he would make it but I am not sure abour JPW or even Brodie? JMO. RTR!

JPW -- no way.  The records don't tell the whole story and he got them in a lot more games.

Brodie -- OK but as much for what could have been as for what was.

GMc -- Marginal.  Better than Bart Starr???  Not in my book.

Richard Todd -- Definately on the list.

Some others: Gary Rutledge, Terry Davis in the modern era, and guys I can't remember in the pre-Gilmer days.

Pat Trammell.

That is all.

When you make a list of this nature the first thing to do is outline your criteria. These things are subjective at best, but meaningless  without a set of guidelines. Collegiate career only or are we including his professional accomplishments (Bart Starr). Statistics, wins and losses, leadership qualities or awards and championships-- the list goes on.

For fun you can usually figure out how old the guy is making the list. This whippersnapper made it too easy.

I want to know where are Gary Hollingsworth, Mike Shula, Danny Woodsen, Freddie Kitchens, and Brian Burgdorf?  >:( >:( >:(

All kidding aside, I agree about Richard Todd being skipped over, and I glad to see Pat Trammel getting his due. I think Joe Willie is a no-brainer, but I think Brodie and JPW are WAY to high.

Also, where do y'all think Scott Hunter should rank?

My friend Jeff Rudledge should have been higher. That SOB beat my azz in everything growing up.

I was in school for some of Scott Hunter's years as our starter.  He was a decent QB on weakish Bama teams.  Hard to judge him because of that.  But somehow, I don't think I'd put him in the top 10.

I remember the Scott Hunter years too. I think he was awsome but his Bama teams were so-so. I have always thought his top receiver Dennis Homan was the best wide receiver to ever play for the Tide.

Is anyone besides me old enough to remember the duel between Scott Hunter and Archie Manning of Ole Miss in 1969. Bama won 33-32. It was a shoot out. I was in Jackson, MS that weekend visiting my grandparents and everyone was wearing "Archie Who" badges. I am not positive but I think that was the first televised night game. I was a young lad but I remember it well.

Buttons were big back then. I remember the Manning for Heisman buttons the enemy wore. I was probably a Bobby Bowden/Jim Braxton (later blocked for O.J.) fan at that time. :-[

So you were running buddies with Rutledge?

I was at that game.  It is among the greatest regular-season games ever played by Alabama.  Great atmosphere.  I had a date with a young lady from Mobile.  Ahh, the memories.

Has the statute of limitations run out on that restraining order?

Jeff and I grew up together. He went to Banks HS and I went to Huffman. The schools were just a few miles from each other. We grew up playing playing YMCA football and Dixie Youth baseball together. He was a good guy. The best pass I ever saw in my life was when he threw a deep out route to a receiver in the Huffman - Banks game my senior year in high school. It was just out of reach of the DB finger tips and the receiver caught it for a TD. BTW I was the DB. It really pissed me off at the time. Once he won 2 national championships for Bama and played in the pros for 15 years I got over it. Not really I am still pissed.

LOL.

Truth.  She is now married to one of my college professors.  No kidding.

The statute of limitations has run out on the "young" part, not the restraining order. ;D

Birmingham.

"Pat Trammell led the team to a perfect season and ultimately to a NCAA National Championship for 1961 (AP, UPI, NFF - unanimous), which was the first in 16 years for Alabama.  He set multiple records during his career at Alabama, mostly during his senior season. 1,314 total yards with 1,035 passing yards was, at the time, a school record. At the conclusion of his final season, he would hold the record as the winningest quarterback in the entire Crimson Tide history, compiling a 26𣇾 record for a 0.875 winning percentage as a starter."

How can anyone leave Pat Trammell off that list?

Edit.  Just to be complete (from wiki):
"After an undefeated 11-0-0 Championship season of 1961, and after winning the Sugar Bowl, the National Championship and the MacArthur Bowl Trophy, multiple awards and recognitions followed suit. Pat Trammell was selected NCAA Academic All-American, was named the 1961 SEC Most Valuable Player, All-SEC (First Team) Back of 1961 season (AP, UPI) and All-SEC Academic Selection. He was voted as the 1961 Collegiate Player of the year by the Touchdown Club of Atlanta. He was chosen as the 1961 Most Valuable Back by the Birmingham Monday Morning Quarterback Club. He was chosen to receive the Most Valuable Player Award for 1961 by the Nashville Banner. He was 5th runner up in the vote for the Heisman Trophy. Although the Birmingham Touchdown Club SEC player of the year award did not begin until 1979, he has been publicly honored and recognized by this organization on multiple occasions. By becoming the permanent 1961 team Captain, Pat Trammell had his hand prints and cleat-prints stamped into the Walk of Fame as "the most outstanding player of 1961" on the ingress of Denny Chimes on the Quad at the University.

Vince Lombardi would pressure Coach Bryant to persuade Pat to come to play for him with the Green Bay Packers after graduation. Coach Bryant responded that 'Pat is too smart to play professional football ... he will go on to medical school to fulfill his personal goals.' Pat had majored in Physical Chemistry in the department of Chemical Engineering and graduated magna cum laude in the top of his class."

I think Pmull already feels bad enough about being Jeff's little beoch. You didn't need to rub it in. Stuff like that can make a guy start smoking dope and playing frisbee golf.

I almost make that play. You should have seen me try to run down Tony Nathan in the Woodlawn game. That was one fast dude.

While I am name dropping I should mention Steve Whitman played for us.

Ozzie was on that team too. They were loaded at that time. I think the 77, 78 & 79 teams were the best three year run we have ever had.

That is what Wiki said (Leighton) but it just doesn't sound right. Name change of school from what used to be on the game programs? I give up.

It did not sound right to be either. I thought he was from some small town in South Alabama. Leon Douglas is also from Leighton. That is two good ones.

Good list..but the person who came up with this, must not be old enough to remember the GREAT  qb's he missed from the 60's, and 70's.
