"Now, we have more skill players that are good perimeter players and I think we are doing what we need to do on offense to take advantage of that," Saban said. "Lane does a really, really good job of taking advantage of what players can do. I think that has benefitted us so far this season. But there's a lot of things that we need to do better on offense."

He meant the penalties and turnovers, especially.

Quote
"In my opinion, we have not arrived as an offense, and he would be the first to tell you that. And I will tell you that, too," Saban said. "You turn the ball over four times and have nine penalties on offense, you're not going to win very many games.

The idea that CNS has wanted a more wide open O for several years....well, that got my attention.  How many times have folks on this board wished for that?  Who knew CNS wished for it too?

So now, what Kiff is doing seems out of character for a Bama O.  But CNS seems to be saying this is O the way it oughta be.

Very interesting.

It's not mentioned in the article, but Saban says that his prior OCs have mostly wanted to run the ball, which worked out OK when Bama had dominant defenses.  But he's happy finally using the offensive talent on the field to attack the perimeter.  (Happy being relative; he still bemoans the penalties and turnovers.)

And he is not just saying that now because Lane is here.  I have heard him make similar comments in the past.  In fact, that is probably one of the main reasons he went out and talked to Lane in the first place.

IMO, it would be foolish of any head coach or OC to have the kind of talent Bama has on offense and not try using all of it.  That being said, I would hate to be a DC that was having to game-plan against a team with stallions at every offensive position the way Bama does...

I agree with you on the DC on the other side. , but that being said when you got talent and some one really gets a hot hand you feed the monster also. Agree?  :-X, RTR!

Do I remember correctly that in the '09 Iron Bowl Saban overrode McElwain's call to call the winning TD pass to Upchurch?

That does seem vaguely familiar.

If, by the midpoint of the season, the O-side penalties and turnovers are controlled, AND the defense tightens up, we could be looking at some scary domination.
