Title: Urban Meyer Left Florida Worse Off Than When He Arrived
Post by: Marshal Dillon on July 21, 2011, 06:19:20 PM
Whoa, talk about a slap in the face. I think the last 2 years, Meyer mailed it in on recruiting.

They won the NC in 08. I say they won the NC in recruiting that February (09). Do I have the years wrong MD?

2009 Alabama was #1 in recruiting.  UF was 11th.

Ron Zook was a good recruiter. Zook just couldn't coach. Meyer had talent when he arrived but he never let the talent level get low. CNS is the only SEC coach that recruited as well as Meyer.

:-[ But 11th is not horrible, just not up to standards.

Meyers biggest problem was player discipline, he had a hard time trying to control that bunch.

That and he lost his Off and def cordinators.

And some bigtime players left early, especially Harvin.

And some big time coaches C made him "catch a Heart Attack," espcially Saban.

Zook left Meyer the nucleus of a national championship team; Meyer left Muschamp the nucleus of a Beef O'Brady's Bowl team.

Wow, that's harsh. Funny, but harsh. The cupboard is not exactly bare, though I don't expect them to win more than 8 games this year.

I'm not sure I buy that. Here is Scout's recruiting rankings for 2010.

A new HC, O-coordinator, D-coordinator, new offense, etc. Yeah, they will have growig pains. I see 8-4, 9-3 at the very best for UF.

They're lucky they don't play in the West.  So is Mark Richt for that matter...he'd be packing his bags after this year.  He has a shot to stick around in the East.

Three games of the east teams I want to see this year:
1. UGA-BSU;
2. UGA-UF;
3. UGA-USC

CMR was laughing and cutting up on "Media Days" last night. He was being interviewed at the end and was asked "What makes coaching fun?" He responded "Winning, going 6-7, not so much."

Last year I thought they'd win.  But after the scandal (jersey sale) their team chemistry went south.  So, I won't predict success by UGA this year.  But many other are saying it's their year.  Certainly they have the talent.

I think the story is a bit extreme.  Meyer certainly recruited talent; it is just that the recruiting competition got harder when Saban rolled into Ttown.  It's not like Florida's cupboard is as bare as, say, Bama's was in 2005.
