How can Davis survive this without UNC getting totally hammered by the NCAA?

I posted last fall ( and I think you agreed ???) that CBD had completely lost control of that program.

My son is there in Chapel Hill.  UNC is in major trouble.  They had all kinds of academic issues on top of the recruiting stuff.  I don't see how he'll survive, and can't understand why he's still there today.

Butch is probably still there because until the  NCAA mess is settled, i.e. NC's future situation is known, no attractive coaching candidate would go near the job.  So why get rid of Butch?  Let him suffer through with the rest of the NC admin.

+1 No real criticism that Davis was anything but GOOD for UNC on a strictly on the field critique. He recruited well and was a great coach, if you take away the rule violations and general PR nightmare. So leaving him in pacle as long as possible doesn't hurt the program.

Agree. Plus, UNC sees themself as above-the-fray and somewhat snobbish, kinda like Michigan. They think of themselves as an Ivy League type academically.

Hmmm.  I've never experienced that attitude there.  The administration at UNC now is embarrassed by this mess and want it erased.  That's why I see a clean sweep; faculty, administration, coaches, and players involved will be dismissed.  I'm surprised it hasn't started yet.

How long has CBD been at UNC? As bad as this sounds, it had to be in place before he got there. I'm sure everyone remembers CBD was Mal's main target at one time. I like him and if he is involved I would be disapointed.

College football is one big mess! Who do we blame for all of what is happening?

Just a few years (4).  Recall, his predecessor (3 coaches back) went to UTexas.  Maybe that's where they went wrong.

I understand it's money but who or what is lacking to turn this mess around. Is it too many rules or is it the lack of enforcement of the rules that are in place or maybe it's the wrong kind of rules to slow this runaway train down.

Could it even be the social media side of it? Every day on most of the message boards there are folks accusing someone or spreading false rumors to get the other in trouble, is this good for college sports.

We all dislike the NCAA for various reasons but think about all of the accusations they must get from sportsfans accusing someone of a wrong doing. So much of it is nothing but hear say or half truths but still the NCAA has to use their time to sort this stuff out which in return causes their investigations to take so long.

I love college sports but somewherre and somehow, someone had better get a grip on this or we're going to lose what so many of us love so much.

OK, have they named a temp. replacement? It is not far to football practice. Why did they fire him, because of the NCAA allegations? RTR!

I will tell you the truth why they fired him. It was because NCAA dropped lack of institutional conrol charges against tOSU because they fired Tressel. UNC is following that path. Hoping for the same.

This is probably correct, and it infuriates me that the NCACA would even consider that.  If that is how it works, then schools every where that want to cheat will just hire a yes man buffoon to run the program.  Then when they get caught, he becomes the sacrificial lamb that gets them out of the lack of institutional control charge and the sanctions that go with it.  Now, does this sound like a strategy that a certain cow college may be planning to use?  Unfortunately, it might just work to at least reduce the penalties.

Butch was fired because he was at the center of the major allegations.  The Chancellor took time to review the accusations and ensure that he understood the situation.  He realized that UNC's academic reputation would suffer from this for a long time and that meant Butch had to go.

Again, as I stated the other day in a previous post, I guess technically there isn't a lack of institutional control.  If it is done intentionally it shows an overpowering amount of institutional control.

I don't think this is what happened at UNC, but does anybody think that cheese whiz was hired for his stellar record at Iowa State?  They put him in place as a puppet that would not fight the institutional control.

There should be a special section of the rule book for schools that cheat when there ISN'T a lack of institutional control.

Timing, Timing, Timing.

Last week the NCAA dropped the major charge of institutional control. Tressel was at the center of all of tOSU problems because he did not report violations (forward emails) to the compliance offficers.

Same thing with the Vols and the NCAA. Pearl lied to NCAA with a Tn. lawyer beside him. They fired Pearl in March, self impose sanctions and are begging for mercy from NCAA.

Coach Davis is fired a week before fall camp starts only to appease the NCAA. Beg for mercy on their knees.

Yes, Butch had to go eventually and he clearly was not hired as a puppet.  Their situation is a little different I suppose.  But the idea that firing somebody can get you out of penalties when you deserve them otherwise is the part that infuriates me.  It didn't used to be that way, at least not when we fired Dubose.

That is about the time I started reading TS.  Does anybody remember who posted that originally?

 I have no evidence to support my claim other than the NCAA may take a coache's firing as positive direction the university is taking to conform to NCAA guildlines.

I agree, if a school has violations they should recieve sanctions regardless of the HC.

This has been one crazy year for NCAA violations and penalties. Given the USCw issue had been cooking already, but there has been many more instances this year than years past.

It must be some kind of tough on head coaches to keep everybody between the straight and narrows, including the head coach.

 

The season is going to be tame compared to the offseason.

I'm hoping these young men at Bama are watching the consequences of what happens when rules are broken.

NCAA did away with student-athletic dorms. The younger stars straight out of high school need an athletic dorm to go to along with all the unmarried athletes. Mainly to learn how to live on their own. Supervision.

Impossible to watch 110 young athletes all the time. CNS does a great job. U. Meyers struggled with these same issues trying to compete.

I have always been impressed with CNS running a clean program at Bama and LSU. His success is delevoping young players into winners. He offers them a chance to compete at the highest level in college football. That is enough to offer a highly recruited young man.

One of Bama's Coaches told us that the NCAA rules almost make it impossible to keep track of the players year round. He said when they are "hands off" with the players is when the bad things are more likely to happen.
